The title of You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G centers on the advice Ben Carson’s mother gave him and his brother: you have a brain–use it. The well-known neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has overcome the obstacles of his father’s leaving the family, being considered stupid by his classmates in grade school, and having a violent temper. He articulates eight principles that helped shape his future and which make up thinking big: Talent, Honesty, Insight, being Nice, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth Learning, and God. Writing for a teen audience, Carson amply demonstrates that the effective use of one’s brain does trump peer pressure. In his experience, “peers†were actually People Encouraging Errors, Rudeness and stupidity. Carson also makes clear that his own battle with an out-of-control temper required help from God, though using his brain to recognize the need was essential. Gregg Lewis is the author or coauthor of more than 50 books, and Deborah Shaw Lewis has authored or coauthored more than a dozen books; the two are the parents of five children. As a team they have worked with Dr. Carson and are able to articulate insights in a fashion that encourages personal assessment. Leroy Hommerding, CLJ (Christian Library Journal)

Throughout his life, renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson has overcome many obstacles: His father leaving the family; being considered stupid by his classmates in elementary school; raised in inner-city Detroit; and having a violent temper. He didn’t let his circumstances control him.In “You Have a Brain: A Teen’s Guide to Think Big,†this world renowned neurosurgeon, devoted Christian and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom unpacks the eight essential parts of Thinking Big– Talent, Honesty, Insight, Strong People Skills, Knowledge, Books, In-Depth learning, and God– and offers compelling genuine stories of people who demonstrated those qualities in his life. By applying the idea of T.H.I.N.K. B.I.G. to your life, and by taking a look at those around you moreover, you can overcome obstacles and pursue achieving your dreams. He writes: “The brain enables us to imagine, to create, and to solve problems. A human brain comes programmed with the ability to extract information from the past, gather information from the present, integrate that data, and project it into the future — which means we’re the only creatures on earth with the capacity to analyze, strategize, and prioritize so we can alter or improve the world around us. This is unlike other animals who only react to what’s going on around them.â€Dr. Carson has an incredible life narrative– raised in dire poverty, a poor student at a young age– but he is a living testimony of the what God can do in the life of a person ready to learn. In this book he shares his personal struggles as a “disadvantaged youth†and the showcases the keys that enabled him to rise to the top of his profession. He attributes his success to his young mother’s insistence that he take responsibility for his life and commit himself to be a reader. After having operated on countless young brains as a renowned neurosurgeon, Dr. Carson ventures out in this book to explain how the brain works and how young people (of every age!) can maximize their use of this God-given organ for God’s glory.A man of devout Christian faith and respected by millions as a model Christian, today Dr. Carson serves as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in the Trump administration.
13 & 16 year old boys loved this book! They couldn't put it down until they finished. My husband and I love it too! We bought this book after reading Gifted Hands. Truly inspiring, especially for teen boys.
Excellent book! Easy read, and full of useful, needed information for our kids! My son is at an age where he'd rather be doing just about anything rather than read. But he enjoys this book (at least when i read it to him rather than making him read it). The life lessons are priceless!
My teenagers and myself have really enjoyed reading this book. It isn't often that you fight with your teenagers of who gets to read a book! That is what happened with this one! I highly recommend this book!
A reiteration of his early life as depicted in his other books; not a page turner, but gives teens advice on how to see themselves in control of their own attitudes and thinking; probably geared more to 13-15 year olds. Solid practical advice with a personal question and answer format at the end of the book.
You Have a Brain by Dr. Ben Carson. This is the second book I have read by Dr. Carson and I have found both inspirational and informative. I was glad to see a chapter devoted to his mother, Sonya Carson. This mother is one who cared for her children and was the biggest influence in their lives as far as I was concerned.Dr. Carson was a world-known neurosurgeon who worked hard to get to his position. He proves it can be done and it is up to you to do what is necessary to make your goal in life. The chapters are:Chapter 1: The Amazing BrainChapter 2: Think Beyond the CanChapter 3: GoneChapter 4: How We Got SmartChapter 5: BookwormChapter 6: Taming my TemperChapter 7: Expanding My OptionsChapter 8: The Smartest ChoiceChapter 9: Off to CollegeChapter 10: The Challenge-Medical SchoolChapter 11 : Becoming a NeurosurgeonChapter 12: More TwinsChapter 13: Mother's InfluenceChapter 14: TalentChapter 15: HonestyChapter 16: InsightChapter 17: NiceChapter 18: KnowledgeChapter 19: BooksChapter 20: In-depth LearningChapter 21 : GodChapter 22: Think BigThe chapters are short and I personally think this should be a classroom study book. It can be done in 20 minutes a day with reading and a discussion. It is also a good family book to read and discuss.Sonya Carson kept telling her sons, Ben and Curtis, they have a brain that God gave them so use it. One became an engineer and the other a doctor.Dr. Carson tells about his childhood, his jobs, his surgeries, his temper and his family. He is a very religious man and talks about God. He encourages young people to T.H.I.N.K.B.I.G. These are chapters 14-21.One of my granddaughters asked me what was my pet peeve and I said "telling a lie" because one forgets what they said in a lie but remembers the truth; something I always told my sons and daughter as I raised them. The next day, I see that Dr. Carson said the same thing in his book.I will give this a 5 star rating. I also read Gifted Hands after I saw the movie.I received a complimentary copy to read and review from booklookbloggers to read and review. The opinions are my own.Leona Olsonhttp://www.mnleona.blogspot.com
My teenage son, yes teenage son, read this book and learned a lot. Reading this made him think and he refers to it often when making decisions.
This is a great book that covers the amazing life story of Dr. Ben Carson. He relates how he has overcome many obstacles in life to become a resounding success. He then follows that up with great advice for young people. I was especially moved by how his relationship with God has shaped his path in life. I highly recommend this book. It would make a great gift for young teens as they consider how to use their talents as they contemplate their own future.
