Amazon.com Review

Oprah Book Club® Selection, January 1997: "Mine is a story of craving; an unreliable account of lusts and troubles that began, somehow, in 1956 on the day our free television was delivered." So begins the story of Dolores Price, the unconventional heroine of Wally Lamb's She's Come Undone. Dolores is a class-A emotional basket case, and why shouldn't she be? She's suffered almost every abuse and familial travesty that exists: Her father is a violent, philandering liar; her mother has the mental and emotional consistency of Jell-O; and the men in her life are probably the gender's most loathsome creatures. But Dolores is no quitter; she battles her woes with a sense of self-indulgence and gluttony rivaled only by Henry VIII. Hers is a dysfunctional Wonder Years, where growing up in the golden era was anything but ideal. While most kids her age were dealing with the monumental importance of the latest Beatles single and how college turned an older sibling into a long-haired hippie, Dolores was grappling with such issues as divorce, rape, and mental illness. Whether you're disgusted by her antics or moved by her pathetic ploys, you'll be drawn into Dolores's warped, hilarious, Mallomar-munching world.

Review

Glamour A heroine to cheer for....This supremely touching journey to adulthood may remind you of The World According to Garp and other sagas of emotional liberation.People There are at least two surprises in store for readers of Lamb's memorable debut novel. One is the author's sex. This male writes so convincingly in the voice of a female, tracing her life from 4 to 40, that you have to keep looking back at the jacket picture just to make sure. The second surprise is how such a string of trials and tribulations can add up to such a touchingly funny book...

I have 3 favorite official books of all time and this is my top two. I've read a little of novels, too, but when I'm feeling "homesick" or unsure about my place in life, I revisit Delores and allow myself to relive her journey, her struggles and strife's, and feel such comfort in her coming of age saga that my own life feels restored. I'm a year over a quarter of a century now, but I met Delores when I was in high school. She traveled with me on the bus, to school, home, then back to school with me and I powered through this novel- not quite understanding it at the time. I didn't know if I liked her or not, but the blue cover called to me and I just had to give her a chance. When I finished it the first time, I didn't know how I felt. It's a story about a messed up little girl with a messed up family, then a messed up overweight teenager, then she's a messed up adult who only at the very end, seems to have found a semblance of peace in her life and with herself. She realizes that all the people in her life that she pushed away, hurt, who watched her or were involved in her self-destruction actually made a difference in her life and she began to heal. She was a total brat- selfish, a glutton, riddled with self-destructive tendencies, yet the older I got and the more times I gave her another chance, the easier it was to fall in love with her and put myself in her shoes. I would buy every single copy of this book I came across because my previous copy would snap in half, or become water damaged from me reading in the tub, or I would heartbreakingly lose my beloved copy on the bus. They'd sell it at half price books for a buck or two, or I'd find a 50 cent copy in the library discard pile. Buying it again, seeing so often in my random, everyday life was just the best sign. Then I would reread. I am on my way to reread it again and I'll cry like I always do, but She's come undone is one of my favorite gifts. It's a part of who I am and I applaud Wally Lamb and wish I could have a conversation with him about Delores and the impact and impression she has had on my life. Read this book. Savor it. Give it a chance. Cuz in truth, we are all a little messed up like she is. She's raw, unapologetic. She feels things deeply and gets carried away in her afflictions, but she comes out on top and works her way to find out that it's okay to plummet and fall as long as you realize you have the strength to get back up and brush yourself off again. She never stops searching and trying to just be okay and live her life, being the person she was meant to be. Change is good because you learn valuable lessons and you find out who you are meant to be. Watching her and seeing the strength that she didn't know she had, even if she's a little wacky and unlikeable is just worth every tear I have shed for this unique book that I love so much. A million stars

The scope of and Amazon review isn't the place the write the essay I could about this book. The characters are vastly developed. The story is both utterly sad and hopeful. This book is one that will touch you in places you don't expect. I cannot recommend this book more.

Bought both ebook and audio. It's really a book that can and maybe should be read/listened to twice. Dolores, her family, the times, scenes, and how the complexity of experiences shape lives is vivid if not stark. The push and pull in who and what Dolores permits to influence her perspective and choices provides the backdrop of her demise into an existence that fosters and shores up the walls she builds against the world. Within a quagmire of tightly drawn corridors, she seeks to relate to others, wanting desperately to reach out yet for a variety of reasons can/does not. Do listen/read the beginning minus a grain of salt. The black and white perspective of the character is easier to swallow. The secondary characters are truly worth the jaunt into the universe of Dolores. Looking through her tunnel vision and short-sighted view allows a larger understanding of how we, in our solo journey, may miss the mark.

This is my favorite book of all time. Wally Lamb writes so believably from the female mind in this story of a woman who can't seem to catch a break. I relate to her, root for her, and love the fact that she does not really pity herself in the story - she just keeps trucking on. She is a very likable character (in my opinion) and I love experiencing her life with her. This is the only book I've ever read more than once - it's fantastic.

Dolores is the strangest, craziest character I feel like I've encountered in a very long time. Although I get why she ended up holing up in a room, eating her way to 257 pounds and shutting people out, her reaction to the events of her life still felt bizarre and even jarring. Throughout the course of the book, we see Delores grow up from a little girl to a middle-aged woman. She goes from grade school and backyard swimming parties, to college and a strange road trip across country. From the innocence of her youth though, we see the events that cause her to shift and become less self assured, less self aware, and less able to cope with life. In short, she falls apart and we are privy to each step along the way and after.I'm still not 100% sure how to respond to the novel, since it is complex, just as humans are complex. The entire story is very centered on Delores, her challenges, and her responses. Although we meet a lot of other characters over the course of her life, it is as if Wally Lamb wrote us into the head of this odd character. At times, I felt anxious and torn apart because of this viewpoint, but it strangely made Delores that much more sympathetic. Without giving anything away, Delores does some crazy things in response to her life situations, and I often wondered if she ever really loved anyone? There are moments that you think she has quieted the demons inside herself enough to allow people in, but then we realize that she has been playing at her own life. In short, she never really seems to be able to let people in.How can I sum up this strange novel without exposing all that happens? I really can't. Needless to say, I still found myself completely engaged in the novel and couldn't stop thinking about it. Lamb has a really interesting writing style that grabs you with its details and cultural references. It's hard to stop flipping pages once you start reading, and I can say I found that to be true in both of his books that I've read. Is She's Come Undone a happy, feel-good novel? I didn't think so, but it is the type of read that is unlike anything else, with complex characters and stories around every bend!
