By the time you read this, I will have packed up after a summer’s month on Cape Cod, where my wife and I hid away with boxes of books, our dogs, and walking shoes. What will I recall best about this break? Ian McEwan’s,The Children Act.This is a book you must read. I am not giving you any choice, especially if, like me, you are on the cusp of old age, and have dedicated decades to resolving other people’s problems in court. We lawyers are tourists treading warily in the chaos our client’s bring us. We strive to counsel them on how best to protect interests put into jeopardy in the rule-bound forum of the courts. Does all this gladiatorial hew-haw come at a cost? I’m betting it does. For the past few years, I’ve thought long and hard about Friedrich Nietzsche and wrestling with monsters: “Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster,” Nietzsche said. “And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.” What happens after years of too close association with the dark side? And I’ve wondered, do judges, too, feel the chill of the abyss – the sense that little is solid, that all vanishes amid the passions and chaos of people in crisis? McEwan brings to life Fiona Maye, a 60-year-old British judge presiding in the family courts. She is married to a classics professor. They are childless and at the height of their careers, and powers. Evenings find Fiona sitting at home amid her papers, reading briefs on the issues she will decide, and drafts of opinions that will soon be published under her name. She and her husband have drifted apart. Their marriage is in crisis. She finds refuge in the crippling uncertainties of the law. She’s a common law jurist, and the family that always stands by her with welcoming doors ajar are those judges who have come before her, creating the doctrines and dogma she draws upon to make impossibly difficult judgments. One such case involves a boy in need of a blood transfusion. Just under the age of consent, he insists that he would rather die, serving Jehovah, than be treated. Fiona substitutes her judgment for his, and he lives. The young man’s reaction to her life-saving decision moves her in unexpected and troubling ways. All this amid a crisis in her marriage that could well drive her into the very courts she presides over. She is wise in her assessment of litigants: they will spend all to vindicate principles that hardly matter. She considers her future in the dim light shed by the law. Better to avoid a push off the rocky ledge on which she stands. Inertia is a better guide, a safer shepherd. Her husband, too, soon discovers no matter how exciting the storm, he’d rather list to port. The couple reconnects in small, unsuspecting, ways. Decades of marriage draw them together again. They realize that not all things need discussion, dissection, resolution. I won’t give away the ending. Suffice it to say that in the end simple decency prevails. The book’s ending is beautiful, moving, and convincing. It gives hope to all who are married, who struggle, and who can find satisfaction in simple decency. Fiona Maye lingered long at the edge of the abyss. A simple caress drew her back from the edge. That truth makes this book a necessity for those struggling against the dark tides of desperation.

Anyone who has been involved in social services or family law will appreciate this book. Readers will be able to find some way to relate to the characters in this book.Fiona May is a high court judge in England who presides over family court cases. To say that her job is a challenge would be an understatement. The cases deal with not only messy divorces and spouses delinquent with child support, but with complicated medical judgments and religious considerations. Not only does Fiona have to come to terms with putting the law before emotions but she can't help but bring these heart breaking decisions home with her. She and her husband live in the same house but find their lives becoming more separate. He finds the relationship cooling and without any intimacy. She feels put upon and can't seem to find time to make things right between her husband Jack and herself.Add to that her new case involves a young 17 year old boy named Adam. He has leukemia and badly needs the treatment that may give him a better life and hopefully a longer one. The problem: He and his family are Jehovah Witnesses and the treatment involves blood products which the faith prohibits. Fiona wishes to meet the young man before making judgment and finds a very erudite, intelligent, and seemingly mature young man who is just months away from his eighteenth birthday when he could legally make his own decision. He makes his own case that he is ready to accept whatever the disease brings which will be an unpleasant, uncomfortable life fraught with probably brain damage and ultimately death. He tries to relay his objectives and moral attitudes. But Fiona is not convinced. And this is where the Children Act of 1989 comes into play. A judge may rule in the case of a minor when his health and welfare is at stake. But Fiona's decision has it's consequences and they are ones that she could never have imagined. How does a judge separate herself from her judgment? How does she separate herself from this young man who she has come to care about? Especially when Adam has developed a certain admiration for her. Memories abound and in Fiona's life Adam has temporarily filled a void. But she has a duty to her profession and in the end she has to make decisions that are painful. The author does a credible job in character development in this story. Fiona is a woman of accomplishment---she's not only a very competent judge and has worked long to attain her position, but she's also a talented musician and puts a lot of heart and soul into her piano abilities. But her personal life is empty. Her husband, Jack who is content as a professor doesn't have the same burdens that Fiona carries in her job. At one time they were a loving couple before they went their separate ways in their careers. Can they find a way back?

Ian McEwan delivers yet another resonant and profound meditation on adult relationships and the unintended consequences of the choices we make. Our protagonist Fiona is a British High Court judge, rendering daily decisions on the fate of families, children, parents, and spouses. Her apparently long-enduring and successful marriage is imperiled when her husband of decades defiantly announces that he's determined to have a fling with a woman 30 years his junior. Concurrent with this development is the case of a young Jehovah's Witness who, when faced with a treatable form of leukemia, chooses the certain death promised by the treatment that he refuses because it conflicts with his family's religious views. This is a challenging case of the highest moral order and one that requires all of Fiona's skills as both a judge and a human being. This brief novel is fascinating not only for its deft handling of the complex relationship between Fiona and her husband as they negotiate the new boundaries of what their marriage is becoming but also for its approach to evaluating the pros and cons of individual rights, religious freedom, and the interests of the state. I won't give away what judgement Fiona renders, but let's just say that it has implications that she could not have foreseen no matter how much deliberation she might have expended on the issue.Literate, adult, and complex with no simple answers, "The Children Act" is another fine addition to McEwan's growing body of work and one that I highly recommend.

The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War

Amazon.com Review

David Halberstam's magisterial and thrilling The Best and the Brightest was the defining book for the Vietnam War. More than three decades later, Halberstam used his unrivalled research and formidable journalistic skills to shed light on another dark corner in our history: the Korean War. The Coldest Winter is a successor to The Best and the Brightest, even though in historical terms it precedes it. Halberstam considered The Coldest Winter the best book he ever wrote, the culmination of forty-five years of writing about America's postwar foreign policy. Up until now, the Korean War has been the black hole of modern American history. The Coldest Winter changes that. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu, and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures -- Eisenhower, Truman, Acheson, Kim, and Mao, and Generals MacArthur, Almond, and Ridgway. At the same time, Halberstam provides us with his trademark highly evocative narrative journalism, chronicling the crucial battles with reportage of the highest order. At the heart of the book are the individual stories of the soldiers on the front lines who were left to deal with the consequences of the dangerous misjudgments and competing agendas of powerful men. We meet them, follow them, and see some of the most dreadful battles in history through their eyes. As ever, Halberstam was concerned with the extraordinary courage and resolve of people asked to bear an extraordinary burden. The Coldest Winter is contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form, and provides crucial perspective on the Vietnam War and the events of today. It was a book that Halberstam first decided to write more than thirty years ago and that took him nearly ten years to write. It stands as a lasting testament to one of the greatest journalists and historians of our time, and to the fighting men whose heroism it chronicles. Includes an Afterword by Russell Baker Tributes to David Halberstam David Halberstam died at the age of 73 in a car accident in California on April 23, 2007, just after completing The Coldest Winter. Legendary for his work ethic, his kindness to young writers, and his unbending moral spine, Halberstam had friends and admirers throughout journalism, many of whom spoke at his memorial service and at readings across the country for the release of The Coldest Winter. We have included testimonials given at his memorial service by two writers who made their reputations at the same newspaper where he won a Pulitzer Prize for his Vietnam War reporting, The New York Times: Anna Quindlen ...David occupied a lot of space on the planet. Perhaps he felt the price he must pay for that big voice, that big reach, that big reputation, was that his generosity had to be just as large. Most of us, when we take to the road and meet admiring strangers, vow afterward to answer the note pressed into our hands or to pass along the speech we promised to the person whose daughter couldn't be there to hear it. But with the best will in the world we arrive home to deadlines, bills, kids, friends, all the demands of a busy life. We mean to be our best selves, but often we forget. David did it. He always did it. The note, the call, the book, the advice. When I mentioned this once he dug his hands deep into the pockets of his grey flannels, set his mouth at the corners, looked down and rumbled, "Well, but it's so easy." That's nonsense. It's not easy. But it is important, and why he has been remembered with enormous affection by ordinary readers all over this country, and why each of us who live some sort of public life would do well, with all due respect to Jesus, to ask ourselves about those small encounters: what would David do? ... Read her full tribute Dexter Filkins ...If I could use a sports metaphor--and I think David would have appreciated that--David was the pulling guard, as in a football game. The pulling guard who sweeps wide and clears the hole for the running back who runs through behind him. We reporters in Iraq were the running backs. David went first--a long time ago--and cleared the way. In Iraq, when the official version didn't match what we were seeing on the streets of Baghdad, all we had to do--and we did it a lot--was ask ourselves: what would Halberstam have done? And then the way was clear.... Read his full tribute A Timeline of the Korean War How It Began January 1950 Secretary of State Dean Acheson leaves Korea out of America's Far East Defense Perimeter. June 25, 1950 The North Korean Army crosses the 38th parallel with a force of about 135,000 troops. The Republic of Korea is taken completely by surprise by the invasion and their forces are soon in full retreat. July 7, 1950 General Douglas MacArthur is officially put in command of the forces set to defend the Republic of Korea. August 1950 Relentlessly focused attacks by the North Koreans drive the ill-prepared defense forces into the country's southeast corner. The Pusan Perimeter is established as the last best hope of maintaining a toehold on the peninsula. August-Sept. 1950 The North Koreans launch assault after assault against the Pusan Perimeter, with particularly brutal fighting taking place along the Naktong River. U.S. soldiers are in constant danger of being overrun. September 15, 1950 MacArthur delivers his masterstroke with the amphibious landings at Inchon. The invasion blindsides the North Korean defenders and relieves pressure on the Pusan Perimeter. UN forces are able to drive north from Pusan and east from Inchon. By the end of September the North Korean forces are routed on all fronts, Seoul has been recaptured, and MacArthur receives permission to cross the 38th parallel. The Debacle November 1950 U.S. soldiers march deep into North Korean territory, eventually reaching the Yalu River border with China. But the first warning of a conflict with the Chinese takes place at Unsan, where the Eighth Cavalry is mauled by a surprise engagement. By the end of November Chinese Communist forces mount a major offensive at Kunuri and the Chosin Reservoir. December 1950 Overwhelmed by hundreds of thousands of Chinese soldiers, UN forces are battered to positions below the 38th parallel. General Walker is killed in an accident, and General Ridgway takes over his command. General MacArthur lobbies relentlessly for attacks into China, an action that would draw China, and likely the USSR, into a full-scale war. Tensions between Truman and MacArthur escalate. January-February 1951 The Chinese reach the high-water mark of their assault. General Ridgway aggressively combats the Chinese in the fight for the central corridor, with major battles fought at Wonju, Twin Tunnels, and Chipyongni. April 11, 1951 Truman relieves General MacArthur of his duties. Raucous public outcry in support of the celebrated general further erodes Truman's popularity. The End July 27, 1953 After years of bloody stalemate, a cease-fire is signed between North Korea and the UN. The border established is very close to the original line at the 38th parallel. It is estimated that the war cost 33,000 American, 415,000 South Korean, and up to 1.5 million Chinese and North Korean lives. In the arena of U.S. foreign policy, the lessons of Korea still largely remain unlearned. The drive to Seoul, September 16-28, 1950

Reviewed by James BradyAt the heart of David Halberstam's massive and powerful new history of the Korean War is a bloody, losing battle fought in November 1950 in the snow-covered mountains of North Korea by outnumbered American GIs and Marines against the Chinese Communist Army.Halberstam's villain is not North Korea's Kim Il Sung or China's Chairman Mao or even the Soviet Union's Josef Stalin, who pulled the strings. It's the legendary general Douglas MacArthur, the aging, arrogant, politically ambitious architect of what the author calls the single greatest American military miscalculation of the war, MacArthur's decision to go all the way to the Yalu [River] because he was sure the Chinese would not come in.Much of the story is familiar. What distinguishes this version by Halberstam (who died this year in a California auto crash) is his reportorial skill, honed in Vietnam in Pulitzer-winning dispatches to the New York Times. His pounding narrative, in which GIs and generals describe their coldest winter, whisks the reader along, even though we know the ending. Most Korean War scholars agree that MacArthur's sprint to the border of great China with a Siberian winter coming on resulted in a lethal nightmare. Though focused on that mountain battle, Halberstam's book covers the entire war, from the sudden dawn attack by Kim Il Sung's Soviet-backed North Koreans against the U.S.-trained South, on June 25, 1950, to its uneasy truce in 1953. It was a smallish war but a big Cold War story: Harry Truman, Stalin and Mao, Joe McCarthy and Eisenhower, George C. Marshall and Omar Bradley, among others, stride through it. A few quibbles: there were no B-17 bombers destroyed on Wake Island the day after Pearl Harbor, as Halberstam asserts, and Halberstam gives his minor characters too much attention. At first MacArthur did well, toughing out those early months when the first GIs sent in from cushy billets in occupied Japan were overwhelmed by Kim's rugged little peasant army. MacArthur's greatest gamble led to a marvelous turning point: the invasion at Inchon in September, when he outflanked the stunned Reds. After Inchon, the general headed north and his luck ran out. His sycophants, intelligence chief Willoughby and field commander Ned Almond, refused to believe battlefield evidence indicating the Chinese Communists had quietly infiltrated North Korea and were lying in wait. The Marines fought their way out as other units disintegrated. In the end, far too late, Truman sacked MacArthur.Alive with the voices of the men who fought, Halberstam's telling is a virtuoso work of history. It was towards the end of the book for me to finally understand why Mr. Halberstam titled his work 'The Coldest Winter' instead of Winters being plural. The author focused the majority his book on the beginning of the war (June 25, 1950) through to a decisive battle at Chipyongni (February 13-15, 1951). The Chinese came to the rescue of the North Koreans on October 26, 1950. That winter saw temperatures dropping as low as minus-forty degrees without considering the windchill factor. Mr. Halberstam does an excellent job of clarifying for me why we got involved in the whole mess to begin with. The war had nothing to do with strategic value. At its core, the Korean War was simply about multiple egos needing to satisfy their superiority over others. The book explains the objectives and motivations of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, North Korea's Kim Il-sung, South Korea's Syngman Rhee, China's former leader Chiang Kai-shek, the Truman Administration, General Douglas MacArthur, General Matthew Ridgway, and other notables. What 'The Coldest Winter' does so well is place the Korean War in the broader context of the region's history and how cultural misunderstandings and prejudices caused the conflict. Man, it continues to depress me how cavalier some leaders can be with human lives, especially their own people. The author attempts to analyze the mindsets of such monsters as Stalin and Mao as well as some U.S. officers and political leaders. Especially in the United States, presidents are sometimes in control and, at other times, they are pulled along by political forces beyond their command. General MacArthur and his toady General Ned Almond are placed in an especially negative light in the book. Mr. Halberstam also shows how all military engagements involve varying levels of political infighting by different officers. The U.S. military has chains of command, but subtle forms of insubordination are rampant. The author's depictions of certain battles are edge-of-your-seat stuff. The book includes twenty-five helpful black-and-white maps but no photos. I also found the glossary of military terms at the beginning of the book to be quite helpful. The book's epilogue gives a remarkable assessment of the Korean War's continuing ripple effects, even today. 'The Coldest Winter' is the best kind of history book. It varies from giving a broader perspective of political machinations at play as well as detailed accounts of combat. The complexity and moral ambiguity of war are front and center. There are stories of heroism, cowardice, bravery, and farce. However, despite the author's descriptions of General MacArthur's power and hubris, I am still at a loss how such a megalomaniac was able remain a power onto himself and could so easily be insubordinate to our country's Commander in Chief, especially in some very public displays. The late William Manchester's highly praised 'American Caesar' is going to be on my future reading list to hopefully give me a clearer picture of the narcissist. 'The Coldest Winter' has not one dull moment in its nearly 670 pages.

This is an excellent history of the Korean War. This is an especially good read if you are interested in the causes of the war, regional and global implications, strategic and operational military decision making, and the political impacts back in the U.S. Although the author delves into some of the battles and gives the tactical perspective of Division and Regimental commanders/soldiers, most of the emphasis is on the key personalities involved at the national and strategic level and the impacts of their decisions. MacArthur, rightly so, comes out looking very bad. This is an excellent companion book to the classic T.R. Fehrenbach book, This Kind of War, which describes in gritty detail the hardships that the common Soldiers endured. I recommend both books to get an idea of how the rugged terrain, harsh climate, and historical geopolitical situation would make a war on the Korean peninsula very difficult and costly.

If you're unfamiliar with the Korean War, you will find this an easy book to read. However, it's not a study of the war in terms of campaigns or actions taken by the belligerents, so you aren't going to get a blow-by-blow picture of how the war progressed. Rather, this is mostly a study in background and some of the primary personalities involved, with coverage of just a very few particular events tossed in. In particular, MacArthur takes a real beating in this book, which I think is utterly deserved, but there are many other books that do likewise. Some other people also get the spotlight, particularly national leaders, military commanders and American soldiers on the ground. It really is an easy read and there's plenty of information on history and policies that led to and shaped the war. On that level, it works very well, and I enjoyed the book. But if you're wanting a treatment of the military events in chronological order or by major battles, then this isn't really what you are looking for. The vast majority of the book covers the period from the start of the war (and its genesis) to the time Mac is fired, which leaves little coverage of the final two-plus years of the war. And it's from that those months that the book derives its name, a period of time in which my dad served in Korea and knows exactly what "coldest winter" means.

There are lots of five star reviews for Wild Fermentation already, but one more can't hurt, right? Katz provides many detailed recipes in this book for ferments of several varieties, which makes it a great starter book to read before stepping up to The Art of Fermentation.Wild Fermentation has two features that stand out to me as especially valuable:First, I did enjoy Katz's philosophical musings in regard to food, politics, death, and human existence in general. Although he is definitely thinking and writing from a very particular perspective, his tone is conciliatory and he remains focused on the potential of food as a unifying social force rather than going off on a tangent of blaming or demonizing folks with different experiences and/or perspectives. I think this demonstrates a degree of good will and rhetorical restraint that is badly needed in our increasingly polarized culture.Second, the suggested reading sections at the end of each chapter are extremely helpful. These have led me to a wealth of knowledge in the particular genres of fermentation that I became interested while reading this book. With such a dizzying number of books available on every type of fermentation, these suggestions have helped to pinpoint which ones are especially worth checking out.

This is a great book for anyone interested in fermenting...anything. I have Katz's "Art of Fermentation", and have found it a great resource, but it is a lot to digest (pun intended). The methods of fermentation are also buried in the prose, and sometimes the instructions in that book were a bit less precise. This new book is basically the condensed version of The Art. It is set up in a more "recipe" format, so the ingredients needed, the time it will take, and the steps to complete it are laid out clearly. There is still plenty of information and opinion about fermenting, but getting to the how-to's is very easy. Love it! If you're looking for one book to thoroughly cover virtually all aspects of fermenting, this is it.

Everything I need to know to get started fermenting my own foods is in here. I have made the fermented buckwheat bread multiple times since getting this book a few weeks ago and I will never stop! It is sooo good and super easy only 3 ingredients: buckwheat, salt and water.

This guy is all about fermenting food. He's taken it to a spirtual, culturally revolutionary level of being into fermenting things. You don't have to get that deep, just make some sauerkraut, but appreciate this man's strange and unrelenting passion for fermented food. Great read!

I have the old version of this book and I love it so much that when I found out there was a new version, I knew I had to get it. This version does not disappoint. It has beautiful pictures and new recipes in it. If you love the old version, I believe you will love this one too. I credit Sandor Katz with helping me overcome my intimidation about fermenting and inspiring me in so many ways. I love the way he writes. I love his recipes. I love his books.

If you're looking for a simple beginner's guide this is fine. I was disappointed, however, after pouring through the comprehensive, in-depth treatise "The Art of Fermentation" by the same author (which is superb and won the James Beard Foundation Award.) "Wild Fermentation" is a simpler precursor with much of the same information but a narrower focus. It does, however, have some step-by-step basic recipes that "The Art of Fermentation" doesn't have. For those who want an introduction into the subject with some basic recipes, this is fine. I'm still looking for a book with a greater range of recipes and variations on sauerkraut, kimchi, fermented fruits vegetables and tsukemono.

This book is great! I have become rather fascinated with the Nuka pickles alone. And the ginger bug. And everything else in this book! Every day I try something new out of this book! All recipes are easy enough as long as you follow Sandor's instructions. Through practice and with this books guidance you can expand and explore. This book is the first step towards a much healthier lifestyle for you and any friends and family that are willing to try rediscovered techniques of healthy food processing. Which (obviously) fermentation is the oldest form of. I recommend this book for everyone who has a kitchen. This is an independent review. I was not paid or given any form of compensation for this review. I'm just an old cook always on the hunt for new flavors to wow my clientele with.

#112,340 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I enjoyed this book. The character development was good. The storyline was a fun Western type story. It tells the story of five orphan siblings. Thomas and Angela, the eldest two, are raising the younger three. The story deals with subjects of loss, healing, growing up, and wise decision making. SPOILER ALERT: I thought Angela was a little too clueless about Thane's feelings for her, and Thane was way too passive in his interest until practically the end. He could have fought for her when she got into the bad relationship. I was glad it all worked out, but a lot could have been avoided if Angela had been a little less clueless and Thane had been a little more aggressive. Also, as Angela's brother, Thomas shouldn't have been so passive. He knew of Thane's feelings for Angela, and saw Angela making mistakes. He should have been a little more vocal. I also felt there were some loose ends, like what happened with Trudie's marriage, and how Angela's bridesmaid dress was so perfect. Mostly, I would have liked the story to include Angela and Thane's wedding (it ended just before it). Overall, a good read. Entertaining, and with good reminders about the Christian life.

A very good story where two teenagers are left in charge of their siblings after the deaths of the parents. Reading about their hardships, such as fear they'd be split up, would they lose the farm and were they handling the raising of their siblings well or failing? All of this takes place back in the days of scrubbing tubs, boards and clothes lines. I cannot imagine the lifestyle, but I could relate to the variety of personalities involved, the anxiety and better things in life ... things that matter and last. Janette Oke tells a good story. There's always something to treasure in her stories. I love the dedication: "To Mother, Amy Marie Ruggles Steeves, from one of your bouqet of eight."

At seventeen, Angela Peterson has already spent several years caring for her three young siblings. With the help of her 19-year-old brother Thomas, Angela tries to teach the children all the important life lessons she knows her deceased parents would have wanted them to live by. Although she and Thomas are fully committed to the enormous task, Angela still worries her best isn't good enough, especially as the children grow older.Angela also begins to understand that Thomas may leave them at any time, despite his assurances to the contrary, as he expresses a secret desire to do work off the farm and as pretty young women catch his eye.Although Angela also yearns to fall in love, she knows at heart that no young man will want a ready-made family...it wouldn't even be fair to him, Angela knows.Yet despite all her worries and insecurities, Angela continues to pray. She knows she must trust in God, as He is the one who knows what's best for her. With faith, Angela knows, the Lord will guide her through it all.Despite being a Christian novel, this story isn't heavy-handed with religion. The characters express their faith, ask for guidance and try to share their faith with others, but it's in a subtle way, just naturally interwoven with the everyday. Angela is a good person by all accounts, yet she struggles with the same private insecurities as anyone else, making her a character with whom readers are sure to identify.

This book is full of love. Love for family, love of God, and love for others. The author creates realistic characters full of emotions and feelings so evident in the world around us. Through the characters leads us to be thoughtful of our hearts and mindful of our attitudes showing how to deal with daily situations and others in our sphere. Even showing that it is okay to admit that we don't have all of the answers. The story shows the value of family and friends. Angela and Thomas are left to care for their young siblings. Dealing with busybody neighbors, a mild drama queen, and a few caring friends just adds to busy farm life. This book however deals with the state of people's hearts and caused me to examine my own.

Thomas and Angela are only teenagers when their parents pass away and leave them to work the farm and raise three younger siblings. The unfailing love and deep faith of their parents are relied upon daily as they seek to bring the children up in a way that would be pleasing to their parents. While the parenting of the children is their priority, they still encounter many of the dreams and emotions typical of every teenager. Ms. Oke has struck a good balance, making the story very interesting and believable.

An intriguing story of great loss and older children taking on enormous responsibility of raising younger children. The author takes us through the numerous challenges of aggression and withdrawal in the younger children and the beautiful way they handled it so that each of the children learned the family life-style and value system of the parents who had entered God's presence. I have suggested the book to others in my family.

This is one of my favorite books from Janette Oke. I decided to purchase it on my Kindle and I was not disappointed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys seeing a story play out with good morals and characters who walk with God.

Jan 6, 2019This book is an invaluable reference book. While is it time consuming to just "read" it (which I am doing while marking it up), it contains a lot of "meat" and the sentences are very well done.PROS:1) The sentences are mostly meaningful, short and concise (which I love), and you will see MANY other interesting words within the sentences. In this example, you will see "rollercoaster" and see that this example word (Komm) is an imperative (command).116- Komm – Come (Imperative)Lass uns mit der Achterbahn fahren. Komm schon!Let’s ride on the rollercoaster. Come on!2) Unlike many other foreign language word books, in this book you will see past participles like this one:747- Gesprochen – SpokenIch habe mit deinem Vater gesprochen. I have spoken to your father.3) Nouns are shown with their genderCONS:1) It is difficult to know which words are inside this book (and which are not) since they are NOT in alphabetic order. So, if you know some German verb you want an example of begins with "V," you have to look at 2000 words to find the one you want, and it may not even be in this book. It would be better to have a list - with clickable links - to EASILY take you to each of the 2000 words in the book. I suggest lists (in German and English) with letters A B C ... X Y Z of words in the book so that you can, for example, just click on "V" to see all the German words beginning with V (ver, verlassen, viel, etc.)There could even be some more lists (all words in alphabetic order, in both German and English and/or by category such as verbs and nouns).2) The plurals of nouns are not shown and it would be nice to see that.OVERALL: Great reference book for those, like me, learning German!

German learners need this book to go along with the other books that they are using to learn the German language.Other books may have a list of words most used but do not show them used in context.! The lay out is great. If you want to expand your vocabulary and learn how to use the words correctly , this book will help you. I wish it had 5000 words in it. Write out all of the examples and study them. Read the English translation first to see if you can write the German translation on your own.

This is great in that you have the most common words and their definitions but they are also used in a sentence with the english translation as well. Not the only thing you'll need but a useful tool in your arsenal.

Amazing list of the most used and need-to-know words in German. Not exactly light reading but a good reference to carry around, particularly on Kindle.

meh

Pretty good book to help remember some of the more important words

I really like this to learn knew words every day. It's helps me to see what words I already know and how much of the example sentences I can read already without help. I would recommend this.

If you're starting off learning German, this book will give you a vast head start. The stats mentioned at the beginning of the book speak for themselves.
