I enjoyed this book. The character development was good. The storyline was a fun Western type story. It tells the story of five orphan siblings. Thomas and Angela, the eldest two, are raising the younger three. The story deals with subjects of loss, healing, growing up, and wise decision making. SPOILER ALERT: I thought Angela was a little too clueless about Thane's feelings for her, and Thane was way too passive in his interest until practically the end. He could have fought for her when she got into the bad relationship. I was glad it all worked out, but a lot could have been avoided if Angela had been a little less clueless and Thane had been a little more aggressive. Also, as Angela's brother, Thomas shouldn't have been so passive. He knew of Thane's feelings for Angela, and saw Angela making mistakes. He should have been a little more vocal. I also felt there were some loose ends, like what happened with Trudie's marriage, and how Angela's bridesmaid dress was so perfect. Mostly, I would have liked the story to include Angela and Thane's wedding (it ended just before it). Overall, a good read. Entertaining, and with good reminders about the Christian life.

A very good story where two teenagers are left in charge of their siblings after the deaths of the parents. Reading about their hardships, such as fear they'd be split up, would they lose the farm and were they handling the raising of their siblings well or failing? All of this takes place back in the days of scrubbing tubs, boards and clothes lines. I cannot imagine the lifestyle, but I could relate to the variety of personalities involved, the anxiety and better things in life ... things that matter and last. Janette Oke tells a good story. There's always something to treasure in her stories. I love the dedication: "To Mother, Amy Marie Ruggles Steeves, from one of your bouqet of eight."

At seventeen, Angela Peterson has already spent several years caring for her three young siblings. With the help of her 19-year-old brother Thomas, Angela tries to teach the children all the important life lessons she knows her deceased parents would have wanted them to live by. Although she and Thomas are fully committed to the enormous task, Angela still worries her best isn't good enough, especially as the children grow older.Angela also begins to understand that Thomas may leave them at any time, despite his assurances to the contrary, as he expresses a secret desire to do work off the farm and as pretty young women catch his eye.Although Angela also yearns to fall in love, she knows at heart that no young man will want a ready-made family...it wouldn't even be fair to him, Angela knows.Yet despite all her worries and insecurities, Angela continues to pray. She knows she must trust in God, as He is the one who knows what's best for her. With faith, Angela knows, the Lord will guide her through it all.Despite being a Christian novel, this story isn't heavy-handed with religion. The characters express their faith, ask for guidance and try to share their faith with others, but it's in a subtle way, just naturally interwoven with the everyday. Angela is a good person by all accounts, yet she struggles with the same private insecurities as anyone else, making her a character with whom readers are sure to identify.

This book is full of love. Love for family, love of God, and love for others. The author creates realistic characters full of emotions and feelings so evident in the world around us. Through the characters leads us to be thoughtful of our hearts and mindful of our attitudes showing how to deal with daily situations and others in our sphere. Even showing that it is okay to admit that we don't have all of the answers. The story shows the value of family and friends. Angela and Thomas are left to care for their young siblings. Dealing with busybody neighbors, a mild drama queen, and a few caring friends just adds to busy farm life. This book however deals with the state of people's hearts and caused me to examine my own.

Thomas and Angela are only teenagers when their parents pass away and leave them to work the farm and raise three younger siblings. The unfailing love and deep faith of their parents are relied upon daily as they seek to bring the children up in a way that would be pleasing to their parents. While the parenting of the children is their priority, they still encounter many of the dreams and emotions typical of every teenager. Ms. Oke has struck a good balance, making the story very interesting and believable.

An intriguing story of great loss and older children taking on enormous responsibility of raising younger children. The author takes us through the numerous challenges of aggression and withdrawal in the younger children and the beautiful way they handled it so that each of the children learned the family life-style and value system of the parents who had entered God's presence. I have suggested the book to others in my family.

This is one of my favorite books from Janette Oke. I decided to purchase it on my Kindle and I was not disappointed.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys seeing a story play out with good morals and characters who walk with God.
