Wow, this book was a lot of fun to read. It also gives you a lot of ideas and insight into running. Highly recommend it.

To be honest I never thought that I would ever believe that I could read a book around the topic of running and enjoy it, but this has turned into one of my all time favorite books and changed the way I think about running.Distance running is the fountain of youth (if done correctly), and this book both inspires you to run and gives you tips on how to run without hurting your body.

Reading this book made me want to weep. Not because it was sad but because finally I could read something that really touched my soul. I am a newbie at running. I have only until quite recently taken up running as one of my more favorite activities. Running the miles helped to give me perspective. Much needed perspective from my failed relationship with the love of my life, from close friends that I have lost because of that failed relationship, then having to feel that I have lost my mind and myself along the way, and dealing with other not so palatable people in my life. It seemed like the only time that I could be free was when I ran. So you have to forgive me when I say that reading about how running brings out the best in humanity and how we connect when we go back to our true selves and truly be kind and compassionate, really really spoke to me. Somehow I always knew that this is the truth and that to read the words saying so made me profoundly happy. Aside from the humanity aspects, the book is beautifully written with good grace, wisdom and humor, not to mention the amount of research and thought that have been poured into this book. Thank you for writing this. I need to reread it again.

I am not a runner. I have never been a runner and doubt I ever will be. But if, at 72 years old, I ever decide to become one, it will be because I read this book. This book is fascinating with its descriptions of the running tribes of Mexico, the quirky people the author meets along his journey to better understand ultra running, the discussions of how “better” running equipment hurts runners, and the description of the exciting race that is the conclusion of the book. I didn’t expect to really like the book, but ended up loving it. I have already recommended it to my book club.

I am not a runner but that will be changing soon. I could not put this book down once I started. At the age of 60, I am going through a renaissance of sorts. As an avid cyclist in the mid 80’s I would experience a surreal sense of bliss on long training rides and I long for that again. Briefly I dabbled in running then too and had the same experience. Fast forward 30 years and with a renewed interest in optimal health as I age, recent weight loss and lifestyle change is stirring that hunger again for feeling connected. While I will never be an ultra marathon athlete , I will aspire to apply similar discipline along with hard work and inspiration to find joy in my athletic quest as in my daily life. Highly recommend, great storytelling that will interest runner and non runner alike.

I have never in my life been interested in being a runner. I struggled with the mile in school, and assumed that any more than that was impossible for me to achieve. I only read this book because my boyfriend and his family all enjoy running and they suggested it as a book that might pique my interest-- they were totally right. After starting this book I started to run regularly and I even got into the habit of reading a chapter right before I hit the trails each day. It really does a great job of filling you with the feeling that humans are meant to run, and that running fills you with a joy that you cannot find elsewhere. I am sad that it is over and make a point to recommend it to anyone I know who might be slightly curious about running, so if you're here, I recommend it to you!

Well written, insightful and appealing story that looks inside the human legacy of endurance training and physical achievement. Our ancestry developed and cherished survival skills that we have somehow morphed into a fringe culture and idiosyncratic sport: ultrarunning as an X-sport. Better to enhance our physical gifts and reach for the extreme than to reduce our biological skill-set to decrepitude under the influence of reality TV or social media... even if it sounds remote and difficult.

What an interesting concept: that humans are born to run. I remember distinctly the thrill of running as a child - the love of the feel of the wind on my face, the sweet freedom of my feet pounding the pavement and then I hit my teen years and it became a punishment for not making a basket or for picking up a foul during a game. The joy was gone and therefore my desire to run died with that. I received this book, Born to Run, in exchange for my honest opinion. This book is a fascinating read about the journey of a man tying together the idea that we were born to run, training to run an ultra himself and studying a unique group of people who well into adulthood, maintain the sheer joy of the run, therefore producing the most prolific long-distance runners. While I was reading this, I found myself deeply engrossed in the story and wishing I could sit down with the author to really pick his brain and go down the rabbit hole with him about his experiences. I was inspired to commit myself to running again and to do so in a joyful way, without the toils and rules of running that we as a society place on it - but more so in a way to engage with myself while I move. It's almost like a novelized version of a motivational speech and one that I wish I could see in person! Wonderfully written, great tone and insightful.

From Booklist

Readers introduced to Shakespeare’s works though print or other media may find themselves wanting to know more about the author whose words are familiar throughout the world. These volumes in the Shakespeare Alive series are not always well organized but are very readable and answer many common questions. Shakespeare and the Theater looks at theatrical life in Elizabethan England, the role of theater, and how theaters were built and used. Of course, much of the attention here centers on the Globe, and the author uses England’s Globe Theater as a resource, as it was built to be a replica of Shakespeare’s favorite haunt. A crisp design and plenty of photographs make for a welcoming format, and while a fair amount of the information is repeated throughout the series, each book feels fresh. Grades 7-10. --Ilene Cooper

I write this review nearly a year after I was discarded by a CN. Beautiful soul, if you are looking for answers and you’re finding yourself, as I was, endlessly searching articles and videos for something to help you make sense of things, look no further. I highly recommend finding a therapist or life coach first. After all, we need to understand things about ourselves that attracted a CN to us in the first place (most of these being admirable traits). But this book is the best supplemental resource to help you reflect on your situation and understand the actions you need to take on your journey towards healing.I consider myself far along in my healing process. However, like the author, I had to do an enormous amount of digging and researching before discovering the term “Covert Narcissist” and what that entails. For someone suffering through a discard and the relentless barrage of abuse , it was like being blindfolded on the front line of a war zone; you know you’re being attacked, but you don’t know the terrain nor do you know the type of ammo being used against you. Everything is foreign. All you know is the person attacking you appears to have hijacked the mind, body, heart, and soul of the person you thought loved and cared about you. Pain like none other.Debbie Mirza has given us a gift by compiling everything into this book. Like she says, you will get through this and you will emerge better, stronger, and wiser... I know for a fact this is true. I cannot even begin to express the abundance of blessings that came about once I found clarity.Even though I read this book already knowing how beautiful healing feels, I still gained so much. It helped me further refine my understanding of the dynamics between CNs and their targets, as well as knowing what I need to do for myself to prevent toxic people from entering my life again. My only wish is that this book was available to me when I was at rock bottom, feeling isolated and alone.Wishing you a blessed journey along your path to healing.

As a mental health professional, I have been looking for a book to offer my clients who have a narcissist in their life. Many of the books I have explored are essentially someone venting their own story and offering little depth and research. This book is different. It sheds light on one of the most complicated and misunderstood types of narcissistic personality disorder - covert narcissism. The author presents well-researched information in a readable and easy-to-understand format, while offering compassion and hope to those struggling to understand their own relationship with a narcissist. The many personal stories from people in different types of relationships with a covert narcissist provide insight into the confusion and pain that many of my clients have experienced. I highly recommend this book for those dealing with the aftermath of a relationship with a narcissist and for mental health professionals who wish to expand their knowledge of this personality disorder.

I've spent some time thinking about this review and how best to say it, because there is so much I could say about it that I don't have enough space here or time! I hope there is a precious woman out there that will read this review and purchase this book because she's dying emotionally, mentally and physically from a bad divorce, but is so confused about why her marriage ended and ended the way it did. After reading scores of books, spending hundreds of dollars on counselling, and trying medication, nothing seemed to help me come to a peace. One night as I was searching for answers by watching YouTube videos, I ran across an interview with this author and after listening to her, I felt like she knew my story personally! Finally, someone seemed to understand my trauma and had some answers. I couldn't get to Amazon fast enough to order the book!I am an avid reader, and I have never been so impacted by a book in my life, (besides the Bible!). I cried many times while reading this book, tears of relief, when the truth she speaks in this book started entering my heart. If you have not been able to move on from a painful divorce but have felt stuck in grief and confusion, this very well might be the book for you! I feel like God put this book in my hands and it has truly saved my life. I am so grateful to Debbie Mirza for writing it. It's given me the understanding and hope that I so desperately needed!

This book is a complete guide to identify a covert narcissist, a passive aggressive narcissist, and emotional and psychological abuse. Just because you don't have bruises on your body doesn't mean you haven't been hurt in a deeply traumatic way. You realize there are other types of abuse, as you read the descriptions in situations such as a romantic relationship, your parents, your co-workers or bosses, your friends. It is a validating text, full of compassion and hope, recognizing that covert narcissists don't look like predators, like villains- it's an inside job, and your mind is the battlefield. There is hope, once you know the traits, you know that there is life with a love that doesn't come from the narcs, and you dig deep, and protect yourself. You learn about self-care and self-love, developing a relationship with yourself and the people who anchor you as a compass for who you are, and who you are meant to be. Enjoy the read!

I have read several books about Sociopaths and Narcissists, but this is the first book that actually speaks to the less forceful and less diabolical persona of these people. The Covert Passive Aggressive Narcissist is even more dangerous, since there is very little to go on, in terms of noticing their behavior and underhanded maneuvors. One thing is clear, these people will never change, and the more that one knows about their underhandedness the better one is in protecting themselvles.

I was drawn to Shauna Niequist's newest book, Present Over Perfect because its title seemed to indicate our current season. I quickly realized that Niequist's life and my life are vastly different. While I'm learning to live with a messy playroom, Niequist is finding balance by saying no to Big Opportunities and Flashy Job Offers. She's learning to settle in at home with a cup of tea and her family. Perhaps it's harder for someone with a lot of opportunities to say no and to find that balance. I'd imagine that the sparkle of recognition is tempting. In that sense, Niequist is open about her change in mindset and what that cost her family and her career. However, as an average mom who doesn't have a Big Career to say no to, I had trouble relating. The big ideas were powerful but the details were privileged and narrow. Niequist leads an idyllic life: Vacations at a lake house, travel, tons of family support, the ability to reimagine her work-from-home job to more perfectly fit her family's needs. And I say this as a middle-class, educated woman of privilege. I wonder how people living paycheck-to-paycheck, without the ease of reinvention would relate to this message?**I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.**

Stopped reading after about 30 pages. I was hoping to read some inspiring material and learn some helpful techniques. I am just a regular wife, mom, and employee, and the pressure to be all of those things perfectly all of the time is intense. The author contrasts her busy life of traveling, speaking, and writing, with her vacations at the lake. I have neither of those - I'm just trying to keep the house clean while my toddler wrecks it and remind myself (in between dirty diapers and my dirty hair) that perfection has nothing on being present with my baby. I just couldn't relate to her. So disappointing!

Ugh.... two words for this book: HUMBLE BRAGGING.The first few chapters are her listing off all the many accomplishments she achieved and how she works harder than everyone else in her life “when I was 11 years old I decorated the store windows while my mangers had hangovers... when my family is relaxing on the weekend I’m cleaning and organizing and packing... I’m the responsible one... I even have a “yes” tattoo.... blah blah” like OMG... I’m sorry but, this book sounds like she is trying to explain to herself why she deserves to relax, listing off all the things she does. And then she goes on to say during some Hawaii vacation she turned to her husband and said “we can’t live like this anymore” meaning what? Meaning.... I don’t know what she is trying to say, but it just sounds like more humble bragging about their extravagant vacations and they second home at the lake??Her thoughts just go on aimlessly and I wish so much that there was a clear direction for this book, but it’s just random thoughts of hers, bragging about her accomplishments or about her spiritual “ah-ha” moments.Disappointed by this book because the reviews were high.

This book was a big disappointment. I read it with my accountability group thinking it would have insight of how to balance life in a God honoring way. Being marketed as a Christian resource, as well as the author being the daughter of a well known evangelical pastor, we thought this would be a valuable tool for us to use in our lives. We were wrong. Niequist uses most of her rationales based on emotions and feelings instead of Scripture. She had some good insights, but did a poor job backing it up besides the reasoning that it made her feel better. It felt like a very self-centered, fluffy, universalist memoir of her vacations. Would not recommend.

Even as a guy, I find this easy to relate to, if a bit feminine with examples. That's fine - I don't think for one moment I'm the target audience. I keep this on my desk at work and read it more like a devotional than a true Christian living book. I may go weeks without looking at it, or read 5 chapters in an afternoon. The average chapter is 5 pages, so not a hard task.Yes, she gives examples that I'm sure some can't exactly relate to, but the big picture principles stick. If anything this adds credibility to the principles she presents - in that they apply to both a nearly 40 year old author mom and, in many ways, to a male professional ten years her junior. I just finished a chapter on white dishes. What?? She admits that having too many dishes was a struggle and a distraction. Though I can't personally say that dishes are a struggle of mine, I have other forms of clutter, both physical and psychological, so what she says really makes sense. If you take the title at its word, "Present over Perfect," it really does help you to focus more on big picture concepts of your life, what you're here to do, who matters most, and gets you thinking about your top life goals. And this comes from a guy reading a ladies' book.

I tried to like it, I really did. But, I just could not relate. I don't have a 'spiritual advisor'. I can't just drop work projects. I didn't find any application for people who did not have her career.

This author is pretty entitled. I relate to her priority shift but I don't know many in my world who relate to her lifestyle.

I wanted to like it, but it was boring. Nothing in it related to me. I left it in a hotel room. Maybe it will help someone else.

"The Bacchae," along with Sophocles' "Oedipus at Colonus," marks the end of the great age of Greek tragedy. The conventional wisdom about this play--at least since Friedrich Nietzsche--is that here Euripides repented his earlier rationalist debunking of the Olympian pantheon and returned to the simple faith of his ancestors. I have my doubts. "The Bacchae" resembles nothing so much as a cautionary tale of the 1960s counterculture. While Pentheus, with his mental rigidity and fear of change, bears a striking resemblance to the hero of Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart," Dionysus brings to mind such charismatic--and deadly--cult leaders as Charles Manson, David Koresh, and Jim Jones. Interestingly Dionysus' entourage, like the Manson family, is almost exclusively female. The disgusting savagery of Dionysian ritual illustrates the dangers of abandoning reason, logic, and human decency to follow our dark primitive instincts. A modern treatment of the same theme is Thomas Tryon's "Harvest Home." Paul Woodruff provided the highly informative introduction (although I disagree thoroughly with his conclusions) and his translation into vigorous, straightforward contemporary English gives us a glimpse of what a shattering impact "The Bacchae" must have had on its first audience. "The Bacchae" may well be one of the most disturbing creations in the western literary canon.

Even though the circumstances aren't current - citizens running off to the countryside to worship Bacchae - and the drama is not what moderns expect - most of the action takes place offstage, there is something in this play that is moving and still speaks to the human experience - at least it did to me. Perhaps it's simply that the characters are thoroughly invested in what they believe to be right and true - and they are also deluded - and pay heavily, the heaviest possible price. Impossible not to be moved by that fundamental human experience even if circumstances are completely different now.I am not competent to judge the translation, other than it was easy to read. The notes were comprehensive, the opening introduction was very helpful.

I'm working on my degree in Ancient Greek, and I'm translating through the Bacchae in one of my classes right now. I have a really good english translation in a big book of Euripides plays, but I wanted a smaller english copy of just the Bacchae to write in/highlight/carry around while I was working on a paper. I couldn't find on the product page who did this English translation, but I figured it would be fine because I wasn't really using the English for anything but helping me find specific parts more quickly so I could look them up in the greek version.Still, this translation is really not good at all. If you're actually wanting to read the Bacchae, find a different translation that does it at least some justice. I like the translation by Stephen Esposito, or you can read it for free on the Perseus website (they use the T.A. Buckley translation).PROS: it's a lightweight and cheap version, if you just need a referenceCONS: it is NOT true to the Greek and not very artfully done. If you want to read and appreciate the Bacchae, see my suggestions above.

Medea by Euripedes was a play I chose for my 2015 reading challenge. The play, with only 47 pages took about 1/2 hour to read. My first thought was.....doesn't the woman on the cover look like Salma Hayek? The play centers around Medea, a goddess who falls madly in love, emphasis on MADLY, with Jason. She gives up everything for this man. We're talking killing, stealing, betraying her father and home, the whole kitten caboodle. She has 2 sons by him then one day, bang........homeboy hooks up with this younger chick, leaves Medea and the kids and marries this home-wrecker. Say what???? Say it isn't so........ oh, it's so!To put icing on the cake, this home-wrecker's daddy (Creon) banishes her from the land. Allowed to stay one more day she plots her revenge and baby she went for it. Unfortunately her revenge is an act that would cost a lifetime of suffering not only her husband but herself as well.Medea, although a quick read, is very powerful. You will agree with Medea and understand her pain but will hate her for her decisions. Jason is a loser who tries to convince Medea that what he was doing was for a good reason. Let me tell you something, no one (woman) in there right mind would believe it. What's interesting is the mentality of both individuals. Medea was not afraid to show her emotions, whether sadness, fear or anger but Jason remained calmed and had no hatred towards her. She screamed at him, called him names, yet he thought they could still remain friends until the end. With no idea what this play was about or how it would turn out. I'm glad I chose it.

While one oftentimes appreciates the scholar for diligence, just as often the entry of Liddell & Scott provides more than adequate discussion of the vocabulary. E. R. Dodds provides a thorough discussion of the vocabulary and an interesting excursus on Euripides "Bacchae". The benefit of this scholarship is background data re extant manuscript editions to verify he textus receptus. In a few lines, Dodds gives background info on Euripides and the play. The student should always be aware that the scholar could be wrong in his interpretation, however excellent the scholarship. Studying Greek allows the student to read this type of scholarly work and make a meaningful contribution or interpretation of the play.

I read this for the first time years ago. I read it again in preparation for writing the sequel to the Sparrow Princess, which will be told from the main antagonist's viewpoint. To say this is a story about a woman scorned doesn't even come close to describing the intensity of Medea's hate. Although I could clearly see both sides of this conflict, it occurred to me that this tragedy repeats itself over and over again to varying degrees even until today. And like the story illustrates, the children are always the ones who suffer the most.

Here's where the series gets good.Ok, did you read Gardens of the Moon? Did you like it? Then you will like Deadhouse Gates. Erikson's writing is more assured, his characters are better, he has become a more confident skillful writer. He’s also slyly funny. It sneaks up on you because you don’t really expect it in the “grimdark” world he has created. If you didn't like Gardens of the Moon at all, this probably won't change you on the series but if you liked it but found it too confusing or weird, give Deadhouse Gates a try and see if the chain of dogs doesn't bring you on board.Deadhouse Gates takes place after Gardens of the Moon but is not a direct continuation of that story, some of the characters reappear (Fiddler, Kalam) but many are new (Coltaine is an all-time great character, Heboric, Icarium and Mappo Tell and Baudin aren't bad either). DG takes place on the continent of Seven Cities as the Malazan forces are facing revolt and rebellion from the locals know as the Whirlwind and led by a prophet named Sha'ik in the Holy Desert Raraku. There are 3 major plot lines, Felisin Paran (sister of Ganoes Paran from GotM) is sent to a prison mine at the behest of her sister, Kalam and Fiddler, using returning Apsalar to her home as an excuse, plan to kill the Empress and newly promoted Imprerial Fist Coltaine must lead 30,000 refuges across an entire continent steps ahead of a rebellious army. I loved Coltaine's story and kept wanting to get back the to the 7th army and the trail of refugees they wereI also started to understand the scope of the series in this one, the hundreds of years of history, the dozens of races, empires that rose and crumbled, Gods of varying power and ascendancy. I believe Erikson has a plan for all of this, something that’s hard to see in just one book, but when you read the second you can see the threads start to emerge. It’s as though each book is a battle in a war that the characters don’t even know they are in yet, the reader doesn’t even know where the battle lines are drawn, but after reading this one, I trust that Erikson does and I’m onboard to find out, even if he only shows hints of the grander stage here and there through the narrative.

Ummmm......Y DO YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO STUPIDI finished and I would give this more stars but it makes me feel like I'm a fantasy idiot. I'm not, I know that I'm not, I usually can really dig in and understand what is going on in most fantasy. But in this series it is so dense that I read all the words and feel like I'm maybe only picking up a third of what I should be.The world building is immense and Steven Erickson isn't afraid to be brutal and kill everyone in the book you liked. But are they really dead???? Well that is another issue altogether because they could be reborn OR they could have Ascended (become something close to a god) or they are just food for the bloodflies. As the very lovely Miche suggested in the comments I’m going to try and use the Tor.com Malazan reread forum for the next book and see if that cuts down on my confusion for this series as it feels like I need college level credit to read this. What I do like about the series is that in a lot of ways it is different from a lot of the fantasy I read. Usually you have the good guys and the bad guys and it is clear who is who. Even when there are shades of grey for character depth YOU KNOW who to root for. I’m still at a loss as to who should get my vote to win. This book was darker and much more brutal than the last book. Also there is a huge plot line revolving around a military campaign ⇠Not my favorite thing usually. But reading the story of Coltaine and the army he lead that was trying to help get the Malazan refugees to safety was one of the most heart wrenching things I’ve read and made me hate almost everyone else in the Malazan Empire. The way that particular arc played out pretty well tore me up and I really was glad when a few people got just what they deserved and less glad with the others they seemed to take down with them. The other line containing Felisin, Heboric and Bauden was also just as brutal but in different ways. I felt so sorry for Felisin and the struggles that she had to go through and how far from the girl she was she fell. Heboric was intriguing to me, a priest/historian that forsake his god. His musings, insights and journey to discover the power within himself was one to pay close attention to. Bauden ended up being one of my favorite characters and I really hoped for trio to have an everlasting bond. (view spoiler)Kalem’s entire story I liked and his was probably one of the more happy arcs even though it too is riddled with death. I’m glad he met a few new people/things during his journey and I’m hoping we see more of him later in the series too.Sorry/Apsalar was one of my favorite characters in the first book. She is one of the few characters from that to get any page time in this, though through Fiddler’s eyes. She is still quite a mystical force and just this side of creepy sometimes. Still her Journey back towards her home in search of her father was one of my favorites in this book. There was at least some kind of hope in that journey and I was glad to see that she retains some skills from her time under the thumb of Shadow.Mappo and Icarium’s role in the book was interesting. I liked finding little tidbits out about the duo’s journeys and why they have been together for over 200 years basically wandering the desert. They were almost the comic relief of the book and by the end there story was as hopeful as it was heartbreaking and spoke to the depths someone would go for their best friend and companion.Overall I struggled with the darkness and misery of this book. There are some funny moments and such but overall 98%, that might be a slight exaggeration but not by much, of the people I liked ended up dead. Also there are some really horrifically brutal scenes in this book that while poignant to the story they also left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. That is probably what was intended but it was just a little too much sometimes.I’m hoping that the next book in the series might have a little happiness in it.

What Erickson does well: Plot, action, world building, conflictWhat could use improvement: CharactersI am in awe of Erickson's complex plot and worldbuilding. I'm not so in awe of his ability to create characters that I, as a reader, can become invested in. He eventually wins me over with his characters in the third book (Memories of Ice), but there are points in this book where I felt that it was a slog to get through, because I just didn't care about the people he was writing about, even though the plot was incredible. If you like epic fantasy - do yourself a favor and get this series. Read it. Just be patient with the storyline and characters. It takes a bit to get rolling.
