I say “experience” because these authors are making sure that Practicing the Kings Economy is more than just about reading a good book. It’s about transforming the lives of the readers. If God’s economy is a potluck rather than a soup kitchen, our primary problem isn’t that poor people “out there” are hungry and hurting. Our primary problem is that because of economic poverty and sin, the poor aren’t participating fully in the joyful life of the community, giving and receiving gifts.It is a challenging book for the reader because it lays out clearly the spiritual requirements to participate in of the Kings economy. Along the way it askes some difficult questions: “Imagine you’re offered your dream job, but it pays half your current salary. Would you take it?...What steps could you take to simplify your life so there would be more to share? Keep in mind that in the immediate term, this might require also releasing yourself from debt so you might be freed for greater generosity in the future, ‘prepared for every good work’ (Titus 3:1 LEB). Also consider how you could give the excess you free up in such a way that it draws you into relationships, particularly with those in need.”

I was thinking this was good to great for much of the book, then I read the application part of the Creation Key.What unmitigated hogwash. They uncritically push the moronic organic food movement and braindead farms like EdenThistle and Polyface despite the overwhelming evidence against both. It's so stunningly inaccurate, and unchallenged, that it brings the entire rest of the book into question.Here's a quick tip to everyone out there, including the authors who clearly couldn't be bothered to do a shred of real research on food and land use. There are more than 8,000 peer reviewed published articles on organic/conventional/GMO foods. There is literally zero nutritional difference at the moment and that's before the introduction of many of the newer GMO crops. On top of that, GMO foods use upwards of 30% less pesticides, that's before the introduction of pest resistant crops that don't need to be sprayed at all, and GMO pesticides are far less toxic than their organic counterparts. To go another step, GMO crops use significantly less land to produce much higher yields, and they cause less soil erosion.I'm genuinely angry at how lazy, or just willfully ignorant, the authors are on this subject. I'm putting the book away and won't be finishing it because of the despicably untrue tripe they pushed as legitimate in chapter 10. Shame on you guys. Go take a middle school science class, you obviously didn't learn anything the first time.

Even though most churches don’t cover economic issues beyond tithing, love offerings, and building funds, we are called to be whole life economic disciples. We are living in America, which has its own economic culture and values that we have spent our lives training for, but we are citizens of Heaven, and Jesus’ economy is different. It is not about consumption and individual wealth and maximizing profits. He’s not even about individual stability – it’s better to lend to others in need even when we can’t afford it with the idea that someone else will be able to help us out when we need it down the road. Scripture actually has a lot to say about economics, showing us that God is willing to get involved in the messy economic lives of his people because he wants everyone at a potluck instead of a soup kitchen. Rhodes says we should start practicing economic discipleship by “bending our economic lives towards the potluck, toward inclusion and dignity” in six different areas.Worship: The way we approach work and money in our lives can be worship and it can also be idolatry. “Giving signals and solidifies our allegiance to and dependence on God and his kingdom” (p. 54). God is a generous Creator and we are being his image-bearers when we are generous ourselves.Community: God doesn’t want us to live independent economic lives, but has designed us for community. His laws show us that he is creating for himself a family and the economy in that family should be one of interdependence and generosity. We are to aim our wealth at the good of the community rather than only thinking of our own lives. A way this is practiced throughout the Bible and could be done today is by feasting together “across racial and/or social economic lines” (p. 124) because in Jesus’ economy everyone has a unique plate to bring to the potluck.Work: One of the ways we have a plate to bring to the potluck is through our work. God calls us to work and to make sure work is available to others. We see this in the gleaning laws in the Old Testament. Rhodes describes this as “bend[ing] [our] economic lives toward the marginalized, creatively and sacrificially leaving some of our own profits in the field to create opportunities for struggling workers in our societies” (p. 143). Not maximizing profits is completely against what the economic policies of the American kingdom would say. In practice, this could look like being willing to hire ex-felons or teenagers from low-income communities. Social enterprises start businesses specifically for the purpose of community change. Rhodes quotes the Social Enterprise Alliance’s description of this approach, which he says is the future for unprecedented progress in these areas, as having “the social mission of a non-profit…with the market-driven approach of a business” (p. 148). For example, the owners of Lucy J’s Bakery worked in the food industry and in fundraising with Dorothy Day house for homeless people, so they started a bakery where they intentionally hire homeless people so that they too can bring a plate to the potluck.Equity: Old Testament laws like the Jubilee ensured an equitable and inclusive community by making sure the poorest don’t get permanently stuck being poor, and by making sure that those who have much don’t have too much and those who have less don’t have too little. In Deuteronomy 15:4, God says that if they follow his economic laws, there will be no poor among them. A way we can be economic disciples toward equity is through impact investing. Impact investing “refers to financial investments that accept a lower financial return in exchange for a higher social return” (p. 186). In other words, they may not be the best business moves by American economic standards, but they are doing some good in the world.Creation Care: Jesus’s death and resurrection is good news for all of creation because all of creation will be renewed. We have a special role in the created world as the conduits of God’s blessings to it. Because of sin, we become vehicles and conduits of curses to the created world rather than conduits of blessings. Our job is to serve and care for the world, and we are to love and delight in the world like God does. Rhodes says, “It’s not just stuff for us to use, but a living beauty to be stewarded and cared for and unpacked in ways that honor our wise King.” A simple way to be a good economic disciple in this area is to bend some of our purchasing power toward things that are good news for the land and animals, especially those who we partner with in our economic lives.Rest: Lastly, the Sabbath is an important part of the economy. God wants to give us the “blessed and holy gift” (p.240) of rest, as he rested when he created the world and calls us to imitate him. Good work is work that occasionally stops. This is practiced in making sure we receive rest for ourselves, but also making sure we give rest to those who depend on us. We also see in the Bible how Sabbath years brought all the people together in equal status.Jesus is God the King in the flesh who came to ransom his world and establish his kingdom on earth. Economic discipleship is learning to work, give, save, invest, share and spend like Jesus is the king and we are his citizens. When we invest our time and energy in living by the policies of Jesus' economy, it will be be good news for us, the people around us, and the land and animals, and will draw others into the saving faith of Jesus as they see how generous and caring our God is. That’s a task worth giving your life to, and this book is a great start in learning how to do that in practical ways. Don't miss it.

I went to the same school as the author, starting around the time he graduated. It's unfortunate he doesn't name any names in the book, some people are recognizable and some are not. Some of the events he describes are familiar, and some have me scratching my head as they don't sound like the same school.I must be fortunate because during my time at sea I didn't experience nearly as many unsavory characters as the author did. But the stories are enjoyable and do give you a pretty good idea of life at sea during those days. It's not quite the wild west he describes anymore.

About the time the author of this book graduated from the California Maritime Academy I had a chance to spend a couple of weeks with two marine engineers who worked in the fleet of an oil company that hauled crude from Valdez Alaska to the company refineries on the West Coast. They were an interesting sort. Both of them had small farms in New England. Their work schedule gave them several weeks off between duty periods. So they could live on the East Coast but join the ships and go to work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bellingham Washington or Valdez to start their next tour.But US born and licensed mariners are becoming a rare breed as the industry changes. And apparently the writer of this book left the industry after just a few years.

I can't recall reading a book that gives more details on the operations of tanker ships. The prose will not win any prizes but I enjoyed sailing with Mark up and down the west coast.Thousands of vessels sail the oceans and now I have an appreciation for what is involved in a type of commerce that we often take for granted.

Having been in Mark's division and graduating class, I can confirm that most of what he talked about regarding Academy life. T-AGOS and Tankers were also a part of my early years, making this memoir a Deja Vu of many shipboard experiences. Being Mark's age, I am amazed at the level detail he has for some of the events -- My first few ships are a blur today. As crazy as the 80's seemed, I miss those days and would take them back in a heart beat over today's overly regulated and sometimes micromanaged environment.

Mark did a good job of portraying the life of merchant mariner. My career began in the 1950's and included graduation from CMA in the early 1960's. Most merchant vessels at that time had crews numbering in the forties which created a somewhat different atmosphere on board. Even so, his description of individuals seemed not so different from the past. You could say that Mark's Memoir is an accurate description of a relatively small slice of the maritime industry and well worth reading. The last 30 years of my active seafaring career was as a harbor pilot in SW Alaska which gave me an overview of the industry as it progressed through the era described in Mark's memoir. The book included interesting details beyond most accounts of seafaring. Well done.

Couldn't put the book down, read it in one setting. Book easy to read and kept my attention. He is a good writer, the only comment I have is what did he do after his last trip? Is he still at sea?

I was raised in Vallejo, the site of the academy. I went to High School with a friend that went to the Maritime Academy. His description of academy life and life on board maritime freighter is very much as stated in the book.Good book. Must say that our time was much earlier. We graduated from Vallejo high school in 1955.

I really enjoyed this book. It brings to life what a difficult occupation merchant marine can be. Living in close proximity of with folks you really don't like can get old quick. This book was written well and was hard to put down. Thanks Mark! , one more thing, I know there's a lot of hard working folks doing a great job.

I love fantasy and was excited to try this book- it had all the makings of a classic fantasy epic. A group of misfits, each with their own special skill, trying to work together to find a kidnapped child who seems to be important to warring groups of royals. African history and mythology coming to life as our group crosses the land and fights demons, vampires, magic, and each other.It took me about one hundred pages to start getting into Black Leopard, Red Wolf. The writing style took a lot of getting used to, not just because it is told as if the narrator is telling stories, but because he jumps around. There's no chronological order, we don't really meet characters as much as they just appear, and things are rarely explained or described. When Tracker finally gets to telling us the story of him getting paid to join up with a group searching for a child who was kidnapped three years ago, the pace picks up and the story gets (mostly) easier to follow. We still don't really know who any of the characters are, or why they are doing anything. We get a lot of stories to explain why things happen and who people are but it's also understood pretty much up front that at least half of what anyone says will be a lie. The end result being I didn't have much of an emotional connection to any of the characters and liked them even less- including Tracker, who despite being our narrator isn't likable but instead is mostly an arrogant, misogynistic jerk even to the few characters who try to get along with him.Pages of descriptions still left me with no image in my head of what I was supposed to be seeing during the traveling, many of the magical beings met along the way got no description because Tracker assumes we know what he's talking about. But let it come to killing something/one, rape, torture, or any other horrible thing and don't worry- those episodes get described in such minute detail you can smell the blood and guts.There were times when I enjoyed the story-telling narrative, when it reminded me of The Odyssey as Homer describes travels and magics and wonders. But more often the technical aspects of the book were distracting and what I ended up focusing on more than the story. If it had been a more 'conventional' narrative, would I have liked the book better? No, I don't think so. Basically it comes down the fact that this was a raw, gritty, dark fantasy and I am not a fan of dark fantasy. I can handle violence is small doses but Red Wolf gives us huge overdoses. Friends become enemies, enemies fight as allies, and it is jarring each time because we only get the story of 'why' afterwards. Far before we get to the end we find ourselves asking what the point of all of it was. Maybe that is the point, maybe the book is meant to be a philosophical questioning of who we are and what is truth and why do people do anything. But when I end a book asking myself "This is how it ended? What was the point of this?" it's pretty certain I'm not going to read the rest of the series to find out out.Black Leopard, Red Wolf is 600 pages of raw violence, betrayal, rape, gang rape, torture, and killing surrounding a quest you're never sure the point of. The technicalities of the writing probably mean some people will love it and others will hate it. Those who enjoy dark fantasy may like the story, but readers hoping for something lighter, uplifting, or positive should probably steer clear of this one. I rather wish I had.

Wow. Fantasy is not my usual genre and I was late to Game of Thrones (and I've still not finished the series) but this- this was amazing. James has created a complex (at times overwhelmingly so) world set in Africa with characters that will stun you. Tracker is a fascinating creature and his quest is one you'll find yourself barreling along with. I honestly don't know what to write about this except to suggest that you try it, even if you, like me are not a fantasy reader. I read this on kindle and would strongly urge others to read it in hard copy (like, you know, book) format because you will find yourself wanting to refer to the list of characters and to occasionally check things you think you read earlier. That isn't a criticism by any means, only a suggestion to make this immersive read more enjoyable. Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC. I'm very much looking forward to the next installment.

The fundamental ideal of using African influences for the world-building is fantastic - it appears strange and familiar at the same time. Unfortunately the execution of the story itself is so flawed as to make the book unreadable for most people. As other reviewers have pointed out, it's so dark that I struggled to find any joy in reading the story. There is so much emphasis on bodily functions, both sexual and scatological, it comes off almost comical at times because most of it is gratuitous and not germane to the plot. Most of the characters, especially the protagonist, are irredeemable and impossible to relate to. I couldn't find myself rooting for any of them, and the success or failure of their quest was meaningless to me. Speaking of the quest, the main mystery turns out to be related to something that happened six generations back and this story line is abandoned at the end of the book as we switch to a more simplistic revenge plot line instead. None of this is helped by the mostly non-linear story telling. The writing and prose are good - the author is very talented in that way - but this is unfortunately a big miss on what could have really been a very original setting to an epic fantasy.

This book was marketed as Game of Thrones in Africa, or if Tolkien had used African mythology instead of Norse. I see the logic of these representations, but these comparisons don't accurately portray the tone, language or violence of the novel.A much better description would be that it's like if Salmon Rushdie or Haruki Murakami wrote the Walking Dead. The book is much closer to a work of literature than popular fantasy fiction in its style. The storytelling is non-linear, with stories-in-stories like nesting dolls, all told from the point-of-view of a very unreliable narrator. And the content is much closer to the walking dead than Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. The deaths (and rapes) are frequent, unfairly doled out, gruesome, and gratuitous. It's just that instead of zombies, the monsters come from African folklore and mythology.I personally really liked this book. But I think several of the other reviewers did not know what they were signing up for. If you're a fan of challenging contemporary literature AND the fantasy genre AND you have a strong stomach, you will probably find this book a rewarding read.

Filled with gratuitous and rampant cursing, sexuality, violence and brutality. Too much even for fans of dark fantasy. I could not finish it.

I spent the past day devouring this incredible epic: so many complex characters - some that you love and some that you hate - two especially that make you laugh out loud - and a one-of-a-kind world with twists and turns you do not see coming. I especially loved Tracker, the main character who can smell people from miles away, and is often getting into trouble even when he should know better. Lots of very sultry scenes, violent scenes, and some shocks that will have your jaw on the floor. What a read.

Well written, great detail of the history, development and demise of another special fighting group, armed with special weapons and dressed in clothing that reverberated from fashion of the wealthy to condemnation by the Pope. They brought a Scot 1200's long two handed sword through history as a fighting weapon, a bearing sword for parades and, in mid 1400 to mid 1500, the most recognized and respected sword who's name became the same as the warrior who used it. Great illustrations and explanations go with the history of these fighters, their recruitment physical requirements, fighting style, their outlandish dress and assorted weapons associated with them, and currently priced accordingly. Good for the collector too.

Nice book as an overall of the history of the Landsknecht soldier. If you want more specific though you might want to look elsewhere. The picture were very helpful and the time line was nice.

Lovely book, enjoyed it thoroughly as a general overview of the Landsknecht.

John Richards and Gerry Embleton make a nice team in this new title for the Osprey Warrior series LANDSKNECHT SOLDIER 1486-1560, if you ever wonder the origin of this Servant of the Country this is one of the best intro to the subject, the famous Landsknecht were one of the best infantry soldiers of the Renaissance,Mercenary Pikemen was one of the deadliest weapon on the field without forgetting their famous and colorful clothes.I think that the content of the book is pretty well done as all Osprey books in 64 pages they try to give the most important info from the Origins of the Landsknecht, organization, army life, religion, costume( one of the most important part) and the decline. In a nice weekend you can seat a relax a travel back in time to the days of the "BAD WAR". Nicely Illustrated by Gerry Embleton which famous illustration and knowledge on the subject make the book complete, he have some works on the subject his book Medieval Military Costume is also illustrated by him and with many colour photographs of real models.A Nice read if you looking for the everyday life of these formidable soldiers of the late 15th century you will find it fascinating. For more Renaissance warfare the book from Thomas Arnold "The Renaissance at War" explore in more detail the wars of this period with alot of maps and Illustration, Osprey have alot of titles on the subject Armies of the German Peasants War 1524-26 by Douglas Miller and Angus McBride and Pavia 1525 are some of the titles you would enjoy if you like to read about the German mercenaries. Lets hope for more titles like this specially on the Swiss, Spanish Tercios and Italian mercenaries.

Richards provides an excellent account of the Landsknecht mercenaries of the renaissance in this work. I particularly enjoyed his section on the structure of a Landsknecht regiment and the officers that led it- the roles of the nachrichter and hurenweibel were quite amusing. Richards certainly proves in this work that the Landsknechts were the first to make use of a modern regimental structure. He also goes into vivid detail describing the Landsknecht costume. I have only one major complaint- Richards spends almost no time in detailing the weapons of the Landsknecht or their battle tactics. He does briefly mention (in the caption of an illustration), the significance of the katzbalger, a Landsknecht's favourite sword, and in his colour plates displays the tactics of a regiment during a battle, but he doesn't write much on either subject. Nonetheless the book was very enjoyable, and worth buying if you're keen on the subject.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Well, this book tells you everything you want to know about working with the Moons' energy. And I was particularly glad to see information was listed for people in both hemispheres! It is something great to add to your magickal collection.

This is a wonderful book. I had a very hard time putting it down. Lisa provides so much fantastic information.I would recommend it to anybody interested in Wicca. In fact I feel it is a must read. I would even recommend it to anybody just interested in the moon.

This book is a encyclopedia of facts and lore about the moonand lunar magical workings. All books by this author are the same and the reader is never disappointed.

The spells aren’t much, and clear at the end of the book - but if you want to know about moon phases, it’s an informative book. I learned, and gained insight, about the moon in the sky during the DAY, more than I did in a term of college astronomy. After reading this book you can look up in the sky, see a moon, and know what you’re looking at: New, waxing, full, waning, dark. That’s pretty cool. I’m left with a residue of excitement for just looking!!Disappointment is, so little insight and description of the intuitive and creative pull and influence of the moon. The deep stuff. The stuff that causes a writer to write, a poet to express, a woman (whether witch or otherwise) to FEEL the power and embrace of the moon in the depths of her being. To FEEL the Goddess, the undulating Enchantress, Her face and Silent intent speaking through the White light of the moon. How it pulls us in our slumber toward a path, causing us to awake knowing, feeling - as if by raw compulsion - what we must do. Where is this written.... the Knowing of the moon, sitting in its/Her light, FEELING Her, whether we understand what and who we are responding to or not?

Great introduction to Moon Magic. Clearly written to help integrate the cycles of the moon into everyday life. I love the comparison of the lunar cycle to the seasons.

Lisa has done it again. She has brought her skills as a writer, and a most knowledgeable Wiccan Priestess together and explained this subject thoroughly, and in an easy to understand way. Follow her guidelines and you'll be practicing moon magic like a pro.

I truly enjoy reading her books. She explains things well and ma m estate it easy to remember. I have read all of her books and I will say, I would continue to read her books.

A lot of helpful information about how to develop a relationship between yourself, the moon, and spiritual and/or magical practices. A wide range of information is covered from the historical to practical applications.

This is book 10 of the Space Team series and the author still has me laughing at these goofy characters. Cal Carver & his (space) team of misfits has saved the universe but also, unfortunately, changed the time stream as well. Everything is truly fonked up once they try to return to “normal” space/time and it seems like it only gets worse with each moment. Luckily Hutchinson, the wildly creative author, makes their misfortunes entertaining for us readers with witty dialogue and clever plotting. I’m on board for as many Space Team books as he can produce... honestly, I get most of my books from the library because I’m very cheap but this is one series that I purchase outright because they are worth the price & more (but don’t tell the author or he might jack the price, lol!)

Have you ever wondered where mustard comes from? Me neither but if you believe this book it comes from the mustard mines on a distant planet! And once again the Space Team is there to save the world in the nick of time. If you have already read adventures 1-9 it would be silly of you to skip this one before reading #11, which is also out. This is Without question the finest, the funniest, and the most dangerous space adventure since episode 9, whichever that one was. And it’s got Space Wasps! And bad guys with eyes in their nostrils. Space Team is the choice of sci-fi humor aficionados from here to Aldebaran who have already read the Hitchiker’s Guide so many times that they had to buy another copy. Read it you must.

Cal has the team ready for their next "saving the universe" moment.... but is it the one they belong in? This time the team really has their hands full and Cal is his usual calm self (yeah right) and begins to have a plan...or something...maybe. This is fun to read and the yucks just keep slapping. It has the same humor and twist as all the past and new twists that make turning pages interesting...well, reading, not so much the page turning thing.

This series is honestly my favorite. If I were stranded on a deserted island, this would be the one set of books I would want to have on me. Besides a set of books on how to survive being stranded on a deserted island. That might take precedence.But anyways. This book was epic. I should have been studying for the SAT. I should have been doing homework. I should have been working on my college applications. I read this instead. Was it worth it? Yes.

I don't want to give any thing away, but if you have liked all or any of the previous books in the series, then you'll love this one as well. While I have loved all of these books, this one is probably one of my most favorites in the series so far. Sit back and enjoy the adventure and hilarity!

Side splittingly funny. If you need a laugh, then pick up this book. Do not however drink anything while reading as it will end up coming out from laughing.

It was funny classic Cal. Story was creative as always but I didn't like the new guy that was annoying much. And too much regrow ing from injuries. Baby hands get old lol. I mean don't get me wrong it was good but out of all the books this was not my favorite.

One of these days, Cal Carver and the author, Barry Hutchison will grow up and become mature adults. Frankly, that will be a sad day.Like all the Space Team books, this one hit's it's mark, walking the fine line between mature, reasoning characters (everyone except Cal) and Cal Carver's space-immaturity.Well done, funny read, keep the stories coming.
