I’ve probably read 40 books since I considered a book to be a five star. The story is ncredible and believable. The characters so well developed and there was never a moment where the story left me wanting. Can’t say enough good. Now, I hope it does not become a movie because there is no way it can be given justice in two hours ... but a 10 hour series ... I’m in!

Another excellent book! My only advice is be sure you buy and read The Whistleblower before you read The Last Act. Both are extremely well done! Great job, Mr. Parks!

The Last Act has a bit of a slow start, and to be honest, I wasn't sure if I would like the book. I've read this author before, so I should've known better because that slow start is like a calm before the storm. That lull is like a lure, pulling you into a false sense of security before it all goes crazy. The premise for this one seems over the top to me, and does require a suspension of disbelief with the danger the FBI is willing to allow a private citizen to put himself in. Tommy is offered a large sum of money for doing what he does best - acting, playing a part. Except this part may well cost him his life. Of course, the number of ways this job could go wrong kept running through my mind, and I really wanted to give Tommy a good shake to stop him. That wouldn't have made much of a story though, and off Tommy goes to prison. Naturally, things start to go wrong and just get worse from there with plenty of twists and edge of your seat moments for our characters. The story kept me turning pages, but the thing that impressed me most was Tommy. I'm not, nor have I ever been an actor, and thankfully, I've never had any dealings with a drug cartel or prison, but Tommy is just so relatable and likable that even when I wanted to scream at him not to do this, I was still rooting for him. This is one of those stories that I can easily see as a movie, and it's definitely one that I would buy a ticket to see.

Tommy Jump is a relatively unknown actor out of acts, having nothing to look forward to and in low financial straits. One of his friends invites him to consider what most would view as an unlikely scenario. It’s one that invites fine acting since it could otherwise wind up with the actor under attack or even dead. With healthy skepticism, Tommy meets with Fed agents and hears a real proposal that raises Tommy’s hackles but also intrigues him.Imagine Mitchell Dupree is a prisoner who has been convicted of four years’ worth of money laundering for a drug cartel, New Colima, led by a vicious criminal El Vio. Mitchell still has not surrendered the information about documents in his possession that could lead to the arrest of the entire cartel and its head. Tommy’s job would be to become a prisoner and ferret out where the missing documents are being hid. The only thing the Feds don’t tell Tommy is that El Vio is trying, via a cartel Director of Security called Herrera, are relentlessly trying as hard as FBI agents to discover this missing information.Tommy would get $75,000 just for going in and a total of $150,000 when the job is finished. This is an amazing opportunity especially as his fiancé Amanda is pregnant. Tommy’s no fool and realizes how dangerous this act could be but really has no idea of just how much a life and death scenario this could quickly become! Still, he says, “Yes.”Entering prison under an assumed alias, Tommy spends quite a bit of time adapting to prison life and its resident prisoners. For the most part, it’s a tedious lifestyle, with information about how to obtain whatever one wants by creating a money scam around “cans” or mackerel packets to purchase contraband.Eventually Tommy meets the object of his search, Mitchell, and winds up becoming trusted and hearing a phenomenal, unexpected story behind his capture. For a while, it’s hard to know who is legit and who’s a fraud. The Last Act by Brad Parks is a standalone novel, and my first book by Brad Parks. This was an excellent suspense thriller that kept me reading from start to finish.Tommy Jump is an actor, who loves his job, but with his fiancée pregnant, he knows he has to get a regular job to make ends meet. Feeling down after performing his last show, Tommy runs into an old friend. His friend is now an FBI agent, and offers Tommy a 6 month job that will make him more than $150.000. All Tommy has to do is take on a fake persona, go to jail and make friends with a banker, who is hiding documents that will incriminate a Mexican drug cartel boss. Needless to say, Tommy accepts the job and prepares himself and his fiancée for the 6 month acting gig.When Tommy enters the jail, he makes sure to make friends, getting himself closer to the banker. He also gets his FBI friends to give him contraband from the outside to use to bribe prison mates in helping him get what he needs.What follows is an interesting, as well as suspenseful story that is told in multiple pov’s (Tommy, his fiancée, the drug lord, and assistant to the drug lord). While Tommy is working to discovering where the documents are, we get glimpses how dangerous and evil the drug boss is, as he thinks nothing of killing anyone on the spot. We also get a close up of the assistant, who is determined to find the documents, before his boss kills him. It is a very exciting story line, and very well written by Parks.The Last Act is fast paced, suspenseful, and intense; which keeps us glued to the book until the very end. I do not want to give too much information, as there are so many twists and surprises all through the book. Tommy was a great character, who evolves as the story continues; especially with the many twists along the way that change everything. The Last Act was a gripping story that was so well written by Parks. If you enjoy suspense thrillers, I suggest you read this book.

One of my most favorite reads! Thank you Jeff for sharing so much with your readers and teaching us how to connect, have faith, live our life to the fullest and in the best way.This story, exceedingly well written, was an unbelievable pleasure to read. It is so well developed, moves along patiently and all the while teaches and gives insight. I could not put this the second of Muirwood down. I can't wait to read the next. I am sure that Lea still has much to learn and teach us . Definitely worth reading

I discovered Jeff Wheeler through his Kingfountain series, and I suggest starting there first. If I had read the Muirwood series first I don't know if I would have continued. Don't get me wrong, I really like the first two books of this series (The first being The Wretched of Muirwood). But I think Jeff's storytelling has improved over time. The Kingfountain series and Muirwood are not related in any way other than style, but Kingfountain is better written in my opinion.I read Wretched of Muirwood and was lukewarm about continuing. But I needed a book to listen to while I am in the kitchen, and the deal with being able to listen to this book for free with Audible when you are a Kindle Unlimited subscriber is just terrific. So I gave it a try and was pleasantly pleased.PROS: The main characters are very likable. They are noble and just and all the things a hero should be. The main female character is strong and determined. The descriptions are lovely, and taken from various beautiful areas of the USA (Redwood forest in particular). I like the magic and the "learner" concept. The story is easy to listen to both in narration (the narrator in the Audible book is terrific) and in overall feeling and tone. It's a good bedtime read - nothing to awful to give you nightmares or set your heart racing.CONS: There is a religious subtext that you have to get over or be okay with. I am not religious, but do have an idea of spirituality. The idea of the "medium" is not unlike the Christian "holy spirit" or Chinese "qi (chi)" or Star Wars' The Force, for that matter, or other life force/spiritual energy ideas. I enjoy the idea of this, and it actually makes the book more fantasy than religious. But there are some cringe-worthy moments where the LDS (Mormon) teachings come through, like the idea that "the scholars won't be able to concentrate because of the mere presence of a young woman at the abbey in a very low cut dress". [insert eye rolling here]. There are other ideas about how men can be fools for women that are uncomfortably truer than most want to admit. And 15 year old girls talking about marriage with 18-19 year old men is a little uncomfortable in modern times, although truly not unusual in medieval times.The ending for me was so predictable. So predictable that you are like "how can these "scholars" not figure this out?". Although the reason for that may be explained in the 3rd book.All in all I do recommend this series if you like clean fantasy with likable characters.

Jeff Wheeler has made an impressive launch into the self publish world. So many authors aspire to the kind of readership he is now enjoying and I can't help but admire that. More importantly, he's a great writer. I hope to see much more of his work in the future and hope he gets the recognition he so richly deserves.Here's why:He's a great storyteller. Muirwood is a narrow scope story sticking primarily to a single point of view. As he matures, I hope to see breadth and depth in more of his characters as he develops a more complex storyline. Regardless, he is a first rate storyteller!He draws you into the character's emotions. Despite the foreshadowing, I still root for Lia at every turn. I know she will prevail, but I bite my nails in anticipation of her next move every time!He describes things like a girl (and I mean that as the highest possible compliment). There's a reason female authors garner such an amazing following and I believe a great deal of that can be attributed to their ability to describe settings, scenarios and emotions well. Jeff is every bit as good as a female author at this aspect of his writing.Every chapter, every book, leaves you wanting more...desperately! I purchase very few books in a rush, and especially not in the same night as I finish one. Jeff Wheeler has become an exception to that rule. I read all of the Muirwood books in 2 days. While I read in excess of 200 books a year, I seldom go from one to the next in a series without jumping genres or authors in between. I often read several books simultaneously and for Mr. Wheeler's books I set aside other books.What he's done and created is unique in a world filled with copycats. I appreciate the originality in the Muirwood series. While I see potential influences in his writing, I feel like the conceptual magic and style is something fresh and new. Can't wait to see this expanded as I have a feeling he has dozens of other ideas bouncing around in his head!These books deserve a five star rating, but I see a room for growth. When I put these next to others in the genre, I still have a few stand out all time favorites and there is a separation in the storytelling. The intangibles are intangible for a reason, but I feel like Mr. Wheeler is on the cusp of having those intangibles. I give out very few five star ratings for books, but I'm certain the next series I read will have a five star rating. Keep going Mr. Wheeler!

This review applies also to the first three books of the Kingsfountain series. Both series are fantasies where serious Evil threatens; and where some humans can connect to a source of power to help defeat the Evil, at least for now. His humans are... human. That is, they are like the people in and around my life. I found myself immersed in the books.It is a truth universally acknowledged that fantasy authors range from excellent to awful. Mr. Wheeler is up there with Raymond Chandler: he grabs you right in to the plot, and doesn't bludgeon you with a lot of excess verbiage. He uses just enough words to get the job done. I was drawn in by the people, the stories, the descriptions of woods and houses, and more. The stories are gripping;* The Blight of Muirwood finally fell out of my sleepy hands this morning at around 6 am. Good thing I'm retired! (And a good thing the Kindle didn't fall off my bed!)Jeff Wheeler is, I think, a very good author heading for greatness. Now 'scuse me while I go buy some more of his books!*Sorry for the cliche. I tried, but could not think of a better word.

I grew up in the Sixties and spent time in the small Alabama town where the author lived. It was a time and place where teenage white boys addressed middle-aged black men by their first names and middle-aged black men addressed teenaged white boys as "siree." The author draws readers in with stark details. She pulls no punches while avoiding a temptation to throw stones. I've known all the types of people she described, in Marion and throughout the world.I've often reflected on those times, that little town, in my formative years thinking I should write a book to try and explain it as much to myself perhaps as to my grandchildren. Reading Darkroom has helped me process my experiences from a unique perspective, neither that of a white person entrenched in the status quo, nor a black person struggling with American apartheid, but an embedded immigrant observer bearing witness to the darker side of our human condition.

Weaver's memoir combines powerful memories with stunning artwork. Weaver was the child of Argentinian immigrants who grew up during the 1960's in a small Alabama town. She witnessed the injustice of segregation as an outsider herself. Weaver captures the perspective of a young person struggling to find her own way in a world she knows should change. Her story should be shared in school libraries everywhere. No one will put down this book unmoved.

My daughter had to read this for English in 8 th grade. She has absolutely loved learning about this tone period and said the book was great on illustrating that time period very well.

I grew up in the same small town as the author. As an immigrant, Lila has a unique "outsider" perspective on the civil rights conflicts of the 1960's in the deep South. But her own personal story of trying to "fit in" within a small town that knew only black and white is what really makes this memoir compelling.I do not recommend that anyone try to read this book on a regular Kindle as I did. You are not able to see the graphics well enough, and that is part of the book's unique perspective.

This is an excellent book written and illustrated in the style of the graphic novel. The drawings are beautifully rendered charcoals drawn from 1st-hand experiences. Lila's spellbinding story and masterful drawings of her childhood in the Jim Crow south make the book difficult to put down. While the reading level would be appropriate for children in 4th-8th grade, it is also a great read for any adult or young adult. I highly recommend this book. As an educator, I feel books like Darkroom should be required reading during the middle grades.

I saw this book last month while visiting the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte, NC. If I hadn't been there with a group, I'd have stood there the whole day, reading the entire thing. It was that intriguing. I ordered a copy from Amazon through my phone before I left the museum. Interesting memoir. Unique perspective. Brilliant illustrations Should be required reading in the U.S. Maybe everywhere.

This graphic novel should be in every school and city library! It is so beautifully illustrated and her personal account is so relevant to our times. The current issue of immigration has deep roots and Ms. Weaver explains them so well as she takes us back in time to the civil rights movement through the eyes of a young Hispanic woman growing up in the Black Belt. Her illustrative talent is marvelous and I look forward to her next venture.

Darkroom is not your usual female graphic memoir. Quintero's Memoir deals with immigration, race, social upheaval and identity. Not white, neither black, the Quinteros arrived from Argentina in 1961 and settle in the Alabama Black Belt area, in a time when segregation and Civil Rights libertarians were going to change the course of History in America. Lila and her family view and dealt with Segregation in a way that was not what was expected from them, but they could not but be appalled by the reality of Segregation and life conditions of Afro-Americans but also were supportive of the Civil Rights movement.Dark Room is both a personal and family memoir. It is also a memoir about the troubles of immigration, of being always The Other. The book it is perfect to illustrate Alterity processes. In a way, it is just normal that the Quinteros would see "the others" in American society, the Afro-Americans, with empathy and humanness. They themselves were "the others" to both white and black people. This gave them an unique vantage point, and also created troubled for them in their personal relationships. I also like the fact that we witness the different fortunes of the Quintero's siblings, as immigration affects differently to the members of the same family because people are, after all, individuals.Dark Memoir is a lovely Memoir that goes from the personal to the familiar, stopping at the historical. Quintero herself reveals at the that memory is not the only source of her Memoir, as an historical approach is given to the narration of some of the horrific events happened in Alabama during the 1960s. Moreover, she was academically advised and supervised to produce a Memoir that is clear about the value of our personal memory in a Memoir, especially when dealing with historical events. I think that shows. There is some sort of detachment in the narration at times, that comes from there.Despite being barely present, Argentina is never forgotten, especially because Lila's mother would recall her beloved Buenos Aires and infuse their American children with a taste for their country of origin. Argentina or Argentinean culture were not imposed on the children, and Lila has ended being very much in touch with her Argentinean family and keeping Argentina culture close to her heart even though she progressively assimilated into America. .Beyond the narrative, the book is wonderfully drawn, with a precise use of ink pen drawing, a great use of chiaroscuro and portrait, and an elegant use of white space. The number of vignettes per page is small, favouring big sized detailed ones, sometimes with barely any text; other times the narration and text is the focus and just a few elements of drawing are present in the page. Generally speaking, the book is visually interesting and varied. This being the case, the book reads quickly, and feels shorter than the 200+ pages that the book has. In fact, was about 60 of the book inn my Kindle and the book was already finished, just the long heart-felt acknowledgements at the end of the book occupying the rest of the book. What the heck?!

this is my own fault, I didn't read the publishing date before purchasing. It is old enough that it really isn't worth buying. Too much has changed since it was published. Internet reference books need to be current to be truly useful.

Not enough stars...A 10 in my book!!!!!Finally Cooks Illustrated has published a cookbook that will go down legendarily as one of their BEST ever!!! The discussion of meat and anything to do with it has been thought through and discussed and varied for ages with no consensus by a majority. Should you roast at high heat or low heat? Should you brine or not brine etc. etc... But long last, Cooks has composed a cookbook that deals with EVERYTHING.... and I mean EVERYTHING that has to do with beef, pork, lamb and poultry. And I say Hooray!!! Finally a "meat bible" I can refer to when I want the best way to braise, roast, grill, broil, sear, tenderize, freeze, thaw, store, and brine any kind of meat out there (don't think seafood... not in here). They have detailed each type of meat mentioned above by showing you the cuts, price, flavor value for that cut and cooking techniques best to use for that cut of meat. They also discuss storing, freezing, brining, cutting techniques for all of the selections above too. Plus feature awesome foolproof recipes for these cuts of meat. The book has got to be about an inch or more in thickness. A MUST BUY FOR YOU AND AS GIFTS FOR NEW COOKS YOU KNOW OR EVEN ONES YOU THINK KNOW IT ALL. A lot to be learned and grasped in this cookbook. Highly, Highly recommend.... Praise to Cooks for finally producing this kind of Cookbook.

I barely write reviews as I don’t have much time on my hands and I typically find most purchases to be average. However, I bought this book to up my game and trust me, it was worth every penny. I already have all of my coworkers buying it. My main focus was Page 45: NY Strip Steak! You want to cook a steak like a fancy steak house this book will have you sailing. Just did my first attempt and I can honestly tell you that I don’t ever need to go to a steak house again. They even added recipes for sauces etc to compliment the meat. Easy directions with very in depth explanations of meat and how the cooking process affects them during each technique. Even goes down to recommendations for brands of cooking materials and utensils ie cast iron skillets, wire racks and whatever else the meal calls for. I figured my first attempt would be a little off but let me tell you... it was perfect on the first go. If you follow their instructions, you’ll be the king or queen of your house or any party. Looking forward to my next meal. #legit

I bought this book for myself/household a few weeks ago, with a book discount, and can only say it is an awesome book . I bought this one ( second order), when it was a lightning deal because I was so impressed; thought it would be a great gift. ~If you want to get into the nitty gritty of the how, what, when of meats (of all kinds, no lie), this is a great book. How do I know? Because I have been butchering some of my own meats for a while now.~OKAY it does not tell you how to butcher, but it does allow one to understand the cuts of meat, the how n why, and what to do with said cuts of meat..~Some awesome recipes! No, I have not tried all of them. I only bought the first book a month ago. I do however know,and enjoy Cook's Illustrated in general. Heck, even if I didn't know them, I would so love this book, it has so MUCH information! (stg)~This is just a really nice, classy book with GREAT details, in mpov. (Seriously, if you are one to "prepare/store/more knowledge", I would call it a great educational book, with lots of recipes too boost that concept.. (not the storing portion, just the education)~Funny thing is, I still have the second copy, unopened, (this one) as I couldn't decide who might appreciate it as much as I do.. It covers beef/veal, pork, lamb and fowl well, with an introduction to each section addressing practical issues such as cuts, handling, carving, boning, cooking techniques, etc. Many good recipes are all given with clear and detailed instructions. The majority of the recipes are drawn from European and western hemisphere cuisines, but there's a sampling of Asian inspired meat dishes from the Middle East, India, China, etc. This is a good book for an inexperienced cook to learn and for an experienced cook to try preparing meats that may be out of their comfort zone. Highly recommended.

I love America's Test Kitchen recipes and Cook's Illustrated is no different. I bought this for my husband, but I have used it many more times. It is my go to guide for all things meat. When I want to up my grilling and BBQ game, I just find what meat I have in the freezer and match it to an amazing recipe. There are instructions for cutting up poultry to creating a special cut of meat out of a larger slab. I love cooks county show for their honest reviews and time tested recipes. This book contained some helpful recipes, but basic cooking methods that included temperature and times were missing. More of "this cut is good for this" with no follow up on how to prepare.

There is a lot of information here, plus helpful new ways to think about the disorder of Depression. I found the author's approach to the subject refreshing, easy to read and not too clinical. I wish he could have found a way to write that didn't need 4 letter words every few sentences. I have depression, but don't need gutter street talk to get and keep my attention! In all fairness, F is in the title line so could have expected the language. Author just seems to have so much to offer without using this un-appealing language.

This is a great How To Fix Your Brain Manual for men who dismiss the silly notion that they’re fighting depression. You may not be depressed, or you may be.Either way, the author explains brilliantly how your brain can fight against you, and how to kick its a$$ back into shape.You won’t find a lot of philosophical BS or heavy theory. It’s an action-packed easy-reading manual, not a dreadful schoolbook or sales pitch. The author doesn’t set you up to become a part of his profit channel. He’s not a self-help guru in a leisure suit. He’s a really smart dude who talks to you like a friend.You can tell he really cares about helping people.What you’ll find is common sense explanations and actual, usable stuff that works to get you over that hump you’ve been stuck on. And you can read it quickly. Get it. Read it. Kick yourself over the hump. You can do it, and this book shows you how.

I'll start off by saying that I have not (fully) finished the book. I am on what the Kindle version says is page 119, 81% through the book (I may, therefore, update this if/when I finish it.). However, as Duff says, we have to take the moments we are productive and do with them what we can (I'm paraphrasing here).I have to say that I'm a little disappointed in the book; to be fair, I think I misunderstood its aims a bit. I was hoping for something on the revolutionary side, without too much jargon and in a conversational tone. The latter two are present, but the former, not so much. Much of the information presented here are things that I had already read a long time ago when I self-diagnosed myself and started treatment initially (and I started therapy and medication.) I eventually stopped going to my therapist and have been (poorly) self treating, so I was looking for a book to help me improve my self treatment while I make my way back towards professional treatment.Unfortunately for me, this book is more aimed at people who are new to depression and/or treatment for depression. Some of the exercises were somewhat helpful; nothing extraordinary but, to be fair, probably not something I would have looked up myself. However, I do have some issues with the author. I am very disappointed that someone with a doctorate in clinical psychology found it appropriate to be dismissive of and make jokes about of about trigger warnings in a mental health self help book. You would think he would be more aware of these things, especially considering PTSD and depression are often co-morbid. Also, one of the trigger warning jokes/dismissals is at the start of the chapter on suicide. Disappointing.Overall, however, I think this book has some use as a text for people who want basic information condensed for them in an approachable and un-intimidating format. Otherwise, I would give this one a pass.

I will be honest I usually hate self help books. I used to buy them and check them out from the library and they often contradicted themselves. One book would say one thing and another would give a different opinion. This one is written by a very sincere author who really likes to help people. It is written in very easy to understand language, which is this author's specialty in his field. He explains very well what goes on in the head of a depressed person and it gives frank advice and good ideas on how to get out of the hole of depression. It is not a quick fix book that you will be disappointed with. It is a book that tells you how to work at getting your depression to a manageable level. Not everyone will find a "cure." I also like the frank discussion of what happens if you tell your therapist that you feel unsafe. Everyone wonders what it is like to say: "I really need help." They are afraid of being carted off immediately and drugged in a hospital. This does not happen except in the movies and he explains what will generally happen I the worst case scenario. I was very glad I bought this book.

I’ve suffered from depression for longer than I can remember. Never has any person or book made me more excited or helped me to feel equipped to fight depression daily.The author breaks things down and puts them in a no nonsense way that helps you to feel like you aren’t the only out there who goes through what you do. His approach is refreshing, brilliant and simple. So many Self Help books are a struggle to get through and have so many steps that are introduced that you can’t imagine being able to take the time to do all they suggest. However, his method is much easier. You have faith that you can defeat depression, slay the beast, come out victorious and be the best version of you at the end without having to take “small steps” that encompass over half your day.To say I highly recommend this book to anybody is an understatement. I want to order copies and give them out to my friends and family. This is definitely worth the few dollars since the benefits are priceless.

Very to the point book with great advice. This book is not like most self help books with wording and guidance you just can't wrap your head around unless you yourself are a psychologist. While it may seem as if it is directed toward men, I loved it for it's straight forward approach and wording. A great read, with open, honest advice.
