The Last Act: A Novel, by Brad Parks

Review

“[Parks’] thriller Say Nothing, published in 2017, was delightfully suspenseful, but his latest, The Last Act, may be his best yet…The Last Act possesses two notable virtues. One is excellent characterizations. Parks not only makes [his protagonist] Tommy believable but does the same for numerous others, including his admirable girlfriend, his difficult mother, his huge, possibly dangerous cellmate, the poker-playing convict who has the secrets and the slippery FBI agent he trusts, perhaps unwisely. The other is a roller-coaster plot that serves up endless surprises. Whatever you think is coming next probably isn’t.”—The Washington Post”The heroes and villains shine, and the writing makes the narrative believable and intense. This story is definitely not the author's last act, and it solidifies the prestige and accolades Parks' has achieved. Prepare to be surprised and astonished.”—Associated Press“The former Star-Ledger reporter turned in another spectacular mystery… Given Parks' stellar plotting and writing, it's worth getting lost in The Last Act.”—The Newark Star-Ledger“A devilishly good story with more twists and turns than Say Nothing, and enough edge-of-your-seat suspense to fill two books.” —CrimeReads“The Last Act is a fast read that sinks its hooks into you and doesn't let go.”—BookReporter“A perfect piece of entertainment."—Steve Berry, New York Times bestselling author“A superb, highly original thriller with a terrific premise. I loved it.”—Peter James, #1 international bestselling author"With The Last Act, Parks conjures meth, murder, and musical theater into a remarkable turn of crime fiction magic."—Reed Farrel Coleman, New York Times bestselling author“This novel packs on the suspenseful surprises and plot reversals that made Parks a mainstay on the best-seller lists, but it's not just gritty and dark. With a lighter approach, Parks focuses on enduring characters and sharp wordplay, perfect for those who like their thrillers witty rather than bloody. Even if they aren't fans of Broadway musicals, readers will want to seek out this one."—Library Journal (starred review)“Award-winning author Brad Parks delivers a confident — and highly entertaining — thriller that spins on believable characters and avoids clichés. It works as a domestic drama that also delves into money laundering, the drug cartel and prison. The Last Act again proves Parks’ mettle in high-concept standalone novels.” —South Florida Sun Sentinel“The Last Act is rife with surprise...[with] smart, tough lead females who provide the essential brains and grit that make happy endings possible... The unforced element of surprise, which is also present and, in spades, works. There are switchbacks and sudden side turnings. Not the least of these is a pitch-perfect outcome.”—The Virginian-Pilot“With a story which made us angry, sad, and was too close to the realities that exist in our society today, The Last Act is definitely an entertaining commercial thriller which does not disappoint.” —Mystery Tribune“[A] riveting new thriller…it’s a perfect setup.” —The Big Thrill“The setup is so patient and the logistics so matter-of-fact that even the savviest readers will be caught in the story's expertly laid traps before they know what's happening.”—Kirkus“A Brad Parks novel offers two pleasures. One is watching a stunning talent at work. The other—operating almost apart from the first—is getting wrapped in the coils of a fiendishly clever thriller.”—Booklist

I’ve probably read 40 books since I considered a book to be a five star. The story is ncredible and believable. The characters so well developed and there was never a moment where the story left me wanting. Can’t say enough good. Now, I hope it does not become a movie because there is no way it can be given justice in two hours ... but a 10 hour series ... I’m in!

Another excellent book! My only advice is be sure you buy and read The Whistleblower before you read The Last Act. Both are extremely well done! Great job, Mr. Parks!

The Last Act has a bit of a slow start, and to be honest, I wasn't sure if I would like the book. I've read this author before, so I should've known better because that slow start is like a calm before the storm. That lull is like a lure, pulling you into a false sense of security before it all goes crazy. The premise for this one seems over the top to me, and does require a suspension of disbelief with the danger the FBI is willing to allow a private citizen to put himself in. Tommy is offered a large sum of money for doing what he does best - acting, playing a part. Except this part may well cost him his life. Of course, the number of ways this job could go wrong kept running through my mind, and I really wanted to give Tommy a good shake to stop him. That wouldn't have made much of a story though, and off Tommy goes to prison. Naturally, things start to go wrong and just get worse from there with plenty of twists and edge of your seat moments for our characters. The story kept me turning pages, but the thing that impressed me most was Tommy. I'm not, nor have I ever been an actor, and thankfully, I've never had any dealings with a drug cartel or prison, but Tommy is just so relatable and likable that even when I wanted to scream at him not to do this, I was still rooting for him. This is one of those stories that I can easily see as a movie, and it's definitely one that I would buy a ticket to see.

Tommy Jump is a relatively unknown actor out of acts, having nothing to look forward to and in low financial straits. One of his friends invites him to consider what most would view as an unlikely scenario. It’s one that invites fine acting since it could otherwise wind up with the actor under attack or even dead. With healthy skepticism, Tommy meets with Fed agents and hears a real proposal that raises Tommy’s hackles but also intrigues him.Imagine Mitchell Dupree is a prisoner who has been convicted of four years’ worth of money laundering for a drug cartel, New Colima, led by a vicious criminal El Vio. Mitchell still has not surrendered the information about documents in his possession that could lead to the arrest of the entire cartel and its head. Tommy’s job would be to become a prisoner and ferret out where the missing documents are being hid. The only thing the Feds don’t tell Tommy is that El Vio is trying, via a cartel Director of Security called Herrera, are relentlessly trying as hard as FBI agents to discover this missing information.Tommy would get $75,000 just for going in and a total of $150,000 when the job is finished. This is an amazing opportunity especially as his fiancé Amanda is pregnant. Tommy’s no fool and realizes how dangerous this act could be but really has no idea of just how much a life and death scenario this could quickly become! Still, he says, “Yes.”Entering prison under an assumed alias, Tommy spends quite a bit of time adapting to prison life and its resident prisoners. For the most part, it’s a tedious lifestyle, with information about how to obtain whatever one wants by creating a money scam around “cans” or mackerel packets to purchase contraband.Eventually Tommy meets the object of his search, Mitchell, and winds up becoming trusted and hearing a phenomenal, unexpected story behind his capture. For a while, it’s hard to know who is legit and who’s a fraud. Read the rest of the wild ride story to find out how it will or won’t be resolved.Brad Parks is a pro at crafting a great plot, knowing when to push up the tension and clues and keeping the reader glued to the exciting pages once the challenges get hot and hotter. This novel will make the reader read more Brad Parks novels. Terrific read for lovers of the crime fiction genre!

The Last Act by Brad Parks is a standalone novel, and my first book by Brad Parks. This was an excellent suspense thriller that kept me reading from start to finish.Tommy Jump is an actor, who loves his job, but with his fiancée pregnant, he knows he has to get a regular job to make ends meet. Feeling down after performing his last show, Tommy runs into an old friend. His friend is now an FBI agent, and offers Tommy a 6 month job that will make him more than $150.000. All Tommy has to do is take on a fake persona, go to jail and make friends with a banker, who is hiding documents that will incriminate a Mexican drug cartel boss. Needless to say, Tommy accepts the job and prepares himself and his fiancée for the 6 month acting gig. When Tommy enters the jail, he makes sure to make friends, getting himself closer to the banker. He also gets his FBI friends to give him contraband from the outside to use to bribe prison mates in helping him get what he needs. What follows is an interesting, as well as suspenseful story that is told in multiple pov’s (Tommy, his fiancée, the drug lord, and assistant to the drug lord). While Tommy is working to discovering where the documents are, we get glimpses how dangerous and evil the drug boss is, as he thinks nothing of killing anyone on the spot. We also get a close up of the assistant, who is determined to find the documents, before his boss kills him. It is a very exciting story line, and very well written by Parks. The Last Act is fast paced, suspenseful, and intense; which keeps us glued to the book until the very end. I do not want to give too much information, as there are so many twists and surprises all through the book. Tommy was a great character, who evolves as the story continues; especially with the many twists along the way that change everything. The Last Act was a gripping story that was so well written by Parks. If you enjoy suspense thrillers, I suggest you read this book.
