Best speciality cookbook I've ever owned. Recipes are diverse and delicious. Ingredients are sometimes exotic--but so are the flavors on your plate! I live in a small community and have found most ingredients locally; for a few items I've located an easy substitute on google. I have purchased this book for three other people who have loved it. I have been using the recipes for almost a year and each one is a new feast--not a remodel. I generally like straightforward cookbooks--"the facts and nothing but the facts." But in "Bean By Bean" you can take or leave the stories and histories. The recipes themselves are clear and not overly complicated. This cookbook has put much needed pizzaz in our kitchen. A fabulous cookbook.

I've been going through a beans-and-grains phase for the past few months. Soaking, cooking, and freezing are pretty much part of my routine - but I tend to get into a rut in terms of recipes, once I find something I like, is easy to make in a pretty big quantity, and my family will eat. So we eat a lot of mjaddarah (with rice or bulgur) and bean/vegetable soups, or cold salads with beans and greens. I tend to flavor cooked beans with cumin/coriander, chilis, and stuff like that, and cold beans with coarse salt, a lot of lemon, and olive oil, as well as either fresh parsley, coriander, or mint. It's just the way I roll.I ordered this book hoping to learn something about beans and to get some inspiration for new ways of cooking beans, and I find it to be a really successful book. So far I've tried quite a few of the recipes, and all of them have been just excellent. as a pretty experienced home cook, I know how to read a recipe and to adjust the quantities and seasonings in order to suit our tastes, but the first time around, I usually make the recipe as it's given. The recipes in this book are easy to follow, they mostly contain ingredients that one can get easily enough, and they turn out great. Also, the author gives a lot of variations without overwhelming the reader. In most cases, it's easy to vegetarianize or veganize the few meatist recipes according to one's habits, and I guess that omnivores can also figure out how to add bacon if they're in the mood. Incidentally, I am so happy this book focuses on simple real foods and not on highly processed faux-meat - that's one of the things that tend to be a big turn off in some popular vegan cookbooks. I plan to make my way through more recipes in the near future.The author's writing is a pleasure to read - it's personal and funny, on the one hand, but it's never irritating, cute, or over the top. It's very knowledgable, but without being dry or didactic. To use Holden Caulfield's test, the author is someone you'd probably like to chat with on the phone (or over a coffee/tea/beer/glass of wine).I would really recommend this book to anyone looking to get more beans and grains into their diet or to someone who is vegetarian/vegan and is not interested in basing their nutrition on french fries and pasta or on expensive processed foods. The great thing about beans is that they're cheap, healthy, and tasty - and Crescent Dragonwagon's wonderful book will go a long way in making them accessible to home cooks.

Not only are the recipes in this book really creative,the stories that go along with them are so fun, informative and interesting to read!I recently became a type 1 diabetic and I have a heart condition. My doc said that I need to stay away from meat (heart problem) and that beans are the best food for humans. That we should all eat them as a main protein source. I thought, "ok so chilli ans tofu everyday for the rest of my life? How can I make BEANS my main protein source forever?"This book is the answer to that question.The recipes in this book made me realize that beans are God's gift to humans. Lol!They are so good and creative, I am in awe of the author and grateful for all of the research, time and attention put into writing this great cookbook.It reads like a book of short stories. Funny and inspiring.I never thought I'd give such a glowing review on a bean cookbook! Lol. Ok let me stop now.Buy the book. Its darn worth it

Lots and Lots of great recipes for every palate. My go to book when I'm in the mood to cook something new.Easy to read and follow every day ingredients with a great twist to keep your cooking repertoire fresh!

About half of the recipes are soup. Most of the others are ordinary recipes for chilis and stew. I guess I was hoping for a wider variety.

I love the writer's quirky sense of humour and personal comments. Besides that, I have learnt much from her sound, practical advice. I am now cooking beans and pulses with confidence, rarely eating meat in any form since January 2018. She has assisted me to transition to a plant-based diet with no hungerpains.

Although wandering in its narrative and a bit "out there", this is still a good book to have on your shelf. For a cook with a small level of competence, this is a good springboard to help you understand the fundamentals of creating some nice meals or dishes using legumes. If you are able to be creative and change up recipes, this should help you with the background to lots of great new ideas. Crescent's explanation for de-gassifying beans will leave you without having to ask "Who cut the cheese?" an hour or two after the meal. Small easy tricks to get perfect beans will also make your dishes stand out just a bit more. Options to include meat or stay strictly meatless give this a dimension that other cookbooks generally bias completely one way or another. I would have rated higher, but like I mentioned, the book's narrative wanders a bit and yo need to jump around to make it work.

Five stars because the information in this book is highly valuable to professional women at any career point - the earlier, the better so you can use it to strategize. I wish I had read it twenty years ago. That said, she does seem to assume you can just leave every job with good feelings just because you want to or just because you added value, which is just not reality given there just are toxic workplaces and and people out there, whether we want to face it or not. Most orgs don't do anything about it - either ever or for far too long - as she points out happened in one of her workplaces, when she had to quit because of a toxic CEO. She lucked out and got asked to come back when they finally got rid of Mr. Toxic months later, but that happening is extremely rare. The book could use a chapter on how to handle toxic workplaces or bosses (or both since they often co-exist), in the moment and as part of “your story.” Robin may say "don't work there in the first place" but it's not always that simple. Luck plays into all of this, and as important as it is to actively manage your career as Robin says, many of us deal with toxic situations we either couldnt or just didn't predict, and net-net, this book - with all its helpful information and guidance - doesn't provide much about how to manage a career with at least one unlucky situation coming up along the way. So, read this but know you'll have to read other books (and there are many) about how to deal with toxic people and workplaces, which are all too common. Yes, manage your career actively and intentionally. Yes, follow "the process." But you didn't do anything wrong if you've experienced workplace toxicity, and you can read any of dozens of books about that to supplement what you learn here. Over time, you can get better at assessing organizations and potential uplines for toxicity, and then you can follow Robin's advice and evaluate each potential workplace in depth and make good choices - but nobody will tell you their culture is toxic and it’s not always easy to see or find out while interviewing/ considering a job. Prepare yourself with other books on toxic workplaces and people, so you can maximize the value from Robin's book, and so hopefully you don't have to painfully learn it from experience like so many of us have.

Let's face it. Being a woman in business is tough. That's why I am constantly in a state of searching for inspiration from businesswomen who have cracked the code - and this title by Robin Toft provided just that. The author opens up her life to the reader from a highly-personal perspective and I felt I really got to know her through the pages of this book. In addition to learning of her business journey to build a multi-million dollar organization, Toft also shares with the reader tangible and practical strategies on how we can each reach our personal business goals and objectives. Great read! I would recommend to all women in business looking to make their mark!

The book is an off the charts great read for all people--not just women--because the lessons and experiences it calls upon apply to the human condition. Maybe this is because I am a first generation American, first to go to college and as a Greek American growing up in Minnesota and my name was not Anderson, Peterson or Schmitt. I had to earn everything. Nothing was given to me. Robin's book is a blueprint for all of us because it comes from the heart of a great person with a great attitude about life. I found myself really inspired and motivated by WE CAN.

This is a must read for all women with aspirations of advancement in the workplace. Teaches some very good lessons about owning your femininity and your personal strengths with confidence.

Robin’s book, WE CAN, is a great career guide for female executives, providing both an overall road map, as well as substantive details and specific examples. However, I wish that I had such an informative source when I started my career many years ago! I believe her book to be invaluable for all executives, regardless of gender.I have found that the percentage of industry executives who successfully transition and flourish in the executive search industry is quite small. The primary reason why is that clients do business with the consultant more so than the “firm” or the “brand”. That first one-minute interface between an executive search consultant and client is pivotal with respect to future business. About the Author

John P. Irish received his B.A. in philosophy and political science from Southern Methodist University, his M.A. in philosophy from the University of Arkansas, and a M.L.S. in American Studies from Southern Methodist University. He is currently working on his Doctorate in Humanities from SMU. He has been teaching U.S. History for over 15 years. This is a great resource for teachers and students alike. This book (as stated in the description) is a work/practice book for students to develop and hone their historical thinking skills. The other reviewers who criticized this book for being nothing more than a set of graphic organizers should have read the description. Yes, it is a set of graphic organizers, but these are great starting points for class discussions, historical writing development, critical thinking, etc. The historical interpretation sets in this book, alone, are definitely worth the cost of the book. This is a must have for every AP World History Teacher who finds him/herself searching for good resources in light of the redesign.

For AP World History teachers these kinds of resources are great. I would have liked to see more topics though, and there is only one answer key per skill, which was disappointing. Still, I am finding it useful to track my students how to develop historical thinking skills and better organize their thoughts.

With limited time, this resource gave me instant skill practice sheets to use with my students. Re-activated prior knowledge when using them before the exam. Good class discussion openers.

I can't wait to use this book in my AP World history classes! It is very well aligned with the AP Key Concepts and Historical Thinking Skills. I love it!

This book is a must if you invest or need to dispassionately evaluate many kinds of evidence used in studies involving mathematics including graphs. If you take nothing else from it, the explanation of regression to the mean is more than worth the price of the book. After reading it on loan from my local library and even before returning it, I realized I would want to refer to it again and again and purchased it.I studied basic statistics and statistics for social sciences in college many years ago. I wish this book had been available then. While my grades would have been better for it, more than that, my understanding would have certainly been enhanced.

Gary Smith's book Standard Deviations is an enjoyable, highly readable overview of using statistical analysis correctly and the pitfalls that can accompany its abuse. Unlike seemingly every other reviewer here, I am neither a PhD nor a statistician, but I do not believe this particular book is targeted to such a narrow audience. Statistics is a topic that many people find as exciting as watching paint dry, but Smith's lively writing style and plentiful examples help keep the reader's interest regardless of their underlying interest or expertise in the field. Concepts are clearly explained, demonstrated with an example or two, and summarized again. Occasionally, I found some of the content to be of limited value. The chapter on graphs was not improved by the discussion of chartjunk, in my opinion. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the book overall and will likely read it periodically as a reminder to think critically about any 'facts' proven by this or that statistical analysis.

I am no expert on stats and I never attained a PHD but that didn't stop me from enjoying this book tremendously. If you are like I was in college and hated your stats class don't that deter you from purchasing this book! Professor Smith's insights are conveyed in an easy to understand manner and his instructions are very valuable to everyone! You will no longer accept academic studies on face value and be skeptical the next time you read in the newspaper about a study that doesn't pass the common sense test. After reading this book you will be armed with strategies to avoid being duped by people who are data farming. Everyone should read this book at least twice!

This makes statistics fun & you learn so much, especially how you are being fooled everyday. I bought 3 more copies & sent them to friends, some of them MBA's & big-time stock buyers & they too have learned a lot.

Like the previous reviewer, I have a Ph.D. in a related field (finance) and also like him, I had never heard of the author, Dr. Smith, before seeing this book last week. After that we are alike in no apparent way. I heard no NPR interview, but when I saw this book on the shelf, I flipped through it and liked its contents well enough to buy it. I did not research the author's CV to decide whether his logic is sound; when a publication is in my area of expertise, I prefer to make that evaluation myself. I am only about a third of the way through the book, but so far I sufficiently impressed that I will probably make it assigned reading the next time I teach a doctoral class that focuses on methodological issues. If you're not doctoral student, don't worry; the book is written for a reasonably bright layman, but many of the issues Dr. Smith raises are common (but not obvious) errors I have seen many researchers make, and I really like seeing so many of them summarized in one place.Indeed, I find it difficult to understand the frame of reference from which the previous reviewer sees the book. He starts by saying "most of the stuff Smith covers has been extensively documented elsewhere," but then goes on to imply Smith is unqualified to summarize said documentation. He criticizes Dr. Smith because "it [sic] like he enjoys taking pot shots at other more respected economists," but then himself asserts that "[Dr. Smith's] CV implies that he was denied tenure at Yale," and then refers to his "bitterness" and his "being willfully blind to the real world." "Enjoys taking pot shots?" Physician, heal thyself. Let me address just the implications of the conjecture that Dr. Smith was denied tenure at Yale. Yale is a world-class university, and Dr. Smith was undoubtedly selected from a set of a hundred or more applicants from other top universities. The fact that Dr. Smith was selected from that pool strongly signals to me that he is exceptionally well trained and almost certainly sufficiently well-qualified to write such a book.I do thank the previous reviewer for pointing me in the direction of "Murmane [sic] and Willett's" book, which he suggests summarizes "plenty of rigorous statistical methods for making valid inferences from observational data." This is a big issue in finance and economics [e.g., unlike a chemist who can control temperature or a physicist who can control velocity, a finance professor cannot tell Apple to fire its CFO so we can see what the effect on share price is], and the most common way of trying to deal with it is with instrumental variables (IVs). However, while this approach is theoretically quite sound when the right IV is available, in practice it is typically difficult to find an appropriate IV. My own personal suspicion is that using an imperfect IV creates at least as many problems as it solves (indeed this is a research area I intend to pursue myself when time permits), but I look forward to reading Murnane and Willett's analysis of this issue.OK, enough about the previous review, what about the book itself? The author is quite correct that, given the pressure to publish, many researchers will be inclined to look at different combinations to try to find statistically significant relations between variables of interest, and that this changes the statistical significance level when such a relation is found. We all see the results of this regularly. Last year eggs were bad for your health; this year they are good. Last month vitamin pills were good; this month they are bad. The traditional wisdom is that because protein is hard on the kidneys, feline renal problems should be treated with a low-protein diet, but there is a growing body of research (e.g., see Hodgkins' book Your Cat, a real bargain at the Kindle price of $8.89) suggesting that in the wild, a cat's diet is about 2/3 fat and 1/3 protein, and when we give them the low-protein diet characteristic of dry food we are actually causing renal (and other) problems, not solving them. Is coffee good or bad? It depends on whether you are reading today's newspaper, or yesterday's, or last week's. The list of such flip-flops is endless, and indeed the medical journals seem to be taking the lead in addressing this problem (e.g., Ioannidis' Why Most Published Findings are False, http://www.plosmedicine.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.0020124).Why are all these tests so inconsistent? Part of the reason is that many are based on observational data and, the IV method notwithstanding, it is difficult to determine cause and effect from observational data. Part of the reason is that sometimes researchers will keep looking until they find a statistically significant result that supports their hypothesis, and then use the same data to "confirm" that hypothesis. Sometimes there was a bias in the way the samples were selected. Sometimes the sample size is too small, or the data were grouped incorrectly, or the wrong data were excluded. If you want a better understanding of these issues, and to be better prepared to assess for yourself what you see in the media, I highly recommend this book.

This was a fun read. Smith finds the delicate balance between educational examples and genuinely fun anecdotes. I recommend this book to those who wish to understand the perils of flawed statistical analyses. It helps to have some statistics background, but it is not required.

This would make a great supplemental book for science or math class for a high school student. It presents an opportunity to clear up misconceptions early and encourages healthy skepticism. I especially liked the discussions about randomness.

I say “experience” because these authors are making sure that Practicing the Kings Economy is more than just about reading a good book. It’s about transforming the lives of the readers. They have established a web site and an online devotional paired with sections from the book. This book changes the way we think about helping others. If God’s economy is a potluck rather than a soup kitchen, our primary problem isn’t that poor people “out there” are hungry and hurting. Our primary problem is that because of economic poverty and sin, the poor aren’t participating fully in the joyful life of the community, giving and receiving gifts.It is a challenging book for the reader because it lays out clearly the spiritual requirements to participate in of the Kings economy. Along the way it askes some difficult questions: “Imagine you’re offered your dream job, but it pays half your current salary. Would you take it?...What steps could you take to simplify your life so there would be more to share? Keep in mind that in the immediate term, this might require also releasing yourself from debt so you might be freed for greater generosity in the future, ‘prepared for every good work’ (Titus 3:1 LEB). Also consider how you could give the excess you free up in such a way that it draws you into relationships, particularly with those in need.”

I was thinking this was good to great for much of the book, then I read the application part of the Creation Key.What unmitigated hogwash. They uncritically push the moronic organic food movement and braindead farms like EdenThistle and Polyface despite the overwhelming evidence against both. It's so stunningly inaccurate, and unchallenged, that it brings the entire rest of the book into question.Here's a quick tip to everyone out there, including the authors who clearly couldn't be bothered to do a shred of real research on food and land use. There are more than 8,000 peer reviewed published articles on organic/conventional/GMO foods. There is literally zero nutritional difference at the moment and that's before the introduction of many of the newer GMO crops. On top of that, GMO foods use upwards of 30% less pesticides, that's before the introduction of pest resistant crops that don't need to be sprayed at all, and GMO pesticides are far less toxic than their organic counterparts. To go another step, GMO crops use significantly less land to produce much higher yields, and they cause less soil erosion.I'm genuinely angry at how lazy, or just willfully ignorant, the authors are on this subject. I'm putting the book away and won't be finishing it because of the despicably untrue tripe they pushed as legitimate in chapter 10. Shame on you guys. Go take a middle school science class, you obviously didn't learn anything the first time.

Even though most churches don’t cover economic issues beyond tithing, love offerings, and building funds, we are called to be whole life economic disciples. We are living in America, which has its own economic culture and values that we have spent our lives training for, but we are citizens of Heaven, and Jesus’ economy is different. It is not about consumption and individual wealth and maximizing profits. He’s not even about individual stability – it’s better to lend to others in need even when we can’t afford it with the idea that someone else will be able to help us out when we need it down the road. Scripture actually has a lot to say about economics, showing us that God is willing to get involved in the messy economic lives of his people because he wants everyone at a potluck instead of a soup kitchen. Rhodes says we should start practicing economic discipleship by “bending our economic lives towards the potluck, toward inclusion and dignity” in six different areas.Worship: The way we approach work and money in our lives can be worship and it can also be idolatry. “Giving signals and solidifies our allegiance to and dependence on God and his kingdom” (p. 54). God is a generous Creator and we are being his image-bearers when we are generous ourselves.Community: God doesn’t want us to live independent economic lives, but has designed us for community. His laws show us that he is creating for himself a family and the economy in that family should be one of interdependence and generosity. We are to aim our wealth at the good of the community rather than only thinking of our own lives. A way this is practiced throughout the Bible and could be done today is by feasting together “across racial and/or social economic lines” (p. 124) because in Jesus’ economy everyone has a unique plate to bring to the potluck.Work: One of the ways we have a plate to bring to the potluck is through our work. God calls us to work and to make sure work is available to others. We see this in the gleaning laws in the Old Testament. Rhodes describes this as “bend[ing] [our] economic lives toward the marginalized, creatively and sacrificially leaving some of our own profits in the field to create opportunities for struggling workers in our societies” (p. 143). Not maximizing profits is completely against what the economic policies of the American kingdom would say. In practice, this could look like being willing to hire ex-felons or teenagers from low-income communities. Social enterprises start businesses specifically for the purpose of community change. Rhodes quotes the Social Enterprise Alliance’s description of this approach, which he says is the future for unprecedented progress in these areas, as having “the social mission of a non-profit…with the market-driven approach of a business” (p. 148). For example, the owners of Lucy J’s Bakery worked in the food industry and in fundraising with Dorothy Day house for homeless people, so they started a bakery where they intentionally hire homeless people so that they too can bring a plate to the potluck.Equity: Old Testament laws like the Jubilee ensured an equitable and inclusive community by making sure the poorest don’t get permanently stuck being poor, and by making sure that those who have much don’t have too much and those who have less don’t have too little. In Deuteronomy 15:4, God says that if they follow his economic laws, there will be no poor among them. A way we can be economic disciples toward equity is through impact investing. Impact investing “refers to financial investments that accept a lower financial return in exchange for a higher social return” (p. 186). In other words, they may not be the best business moves by American economic standards, but they are doing some good in the world.Creation Care: Jesus’s death and resurrection is good news for all of creation because all of creation will be renewed. We have a special role in the created world as the conduits of God’s blessings to it. Because of sin, we become vehicles and conduits of curses to the created world rather than conduits of blessings. Our job is to serve and care for the world, and we are to love and delight in the world like God does. Rhodes says, “It’s not just stuff for us to use, but a living beauty to be stewarded and cared for and unpacked in ways that honor our wise King.” A simple way to be a good economic disciple in this area is to bend some of our purchasing power toward things that are good news for the land and animals, especially those who we partner with in our economic lives.Rest: Lastly, the Sabbath is an important part of the economy. God wants to give us the “blessed and holy gift” (p.240) of rest, as he rested when he created the world and calls us to imitate him. Good work is work that occasionally stops. This is practiced in making sure we receive rest for ourselves, but also making sure we give rest to those who depend on us. We also see in the Bible how Sabbath years brought all the people together in equal status.Jesus is God the King in the flesh who came to ransom his world and establish his kingdom on earth. Economic discipleship is learning to work, give, save, invest, share and spend like Jesus is the king and we are his citizens. When we invest our time and energy in living by the policies of Jesus' economy, it will be be good news for us, the people around us, and the land and animals, and will draw others into the saving faith of Jesus as they see how generous and caring our God is. I went to the same school as the author, starting around the time he graduated. It's unfortunate he doesn't name any names in the book, some people are recognizable and some are not. Some of the events he describes are familiar, and some have me scratching my head as they don't sound like the same school.I must be fortunate because during my time at sea I didn't experience nearly as many unsavory characters as the author did. But the stories are enjoyable and do give you a pretty good idea of life at sea during those days. It's not quite the wild west he describes anymore.

About the time the author of this book graduated from the California Maritime Academy I had a chance to spend a couple of weeks with two marine engineers who worked in the fleet of an oil company that hauled crude from Valdez Alaska to the company refineries on the West Coast. They were an interesting sort. Both of them had small farms in New England. Their work schedule gave them several weeks off between duty periods. So they could live on the East Coast but join the ships and go to work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bellingham Washington or Valdez to start their next tour.But US born and licensed mariners are becoming a rare breed as the industry changes. And apparently the writer of this book left the industry after just a few years.

I can't recall reading a book that gives more details on the operations of tanker ships. The prose will not win any prizes but I enjoyed sailing with Mark up and down the west coast.Thousands of vessels sail the oceans and now I have an appreciation for what is involved in a type of commerce that we often take for granted.

Having been in Mark's division and graduating class, I can confirm that most of what he talked about regarding Academy life. T-AGOS and Tankers were also a part of my early years, making this memoir a Deja Vu of many shipboard experiences. Being Mark's age, I am amazed at the level detail he has for some of the events -- My first few ships are a blur today. As crazy as the 80's seemed, I miss those days and would take them back in a heart beat over today's overly regulated and sometimes micromanaged environment.

Mark did a good job of portraying the life of merchant mariner. My career began in the 1950's and included graduation from CMA in the early 1960's. Most merchant vessels at that time had crews numbering in the forties which created a somewhat different atmosphere on board. Even so, his description of individuals seemed not so different from the past. You could say that Mark's Memoir is an accurate description of a relatively small slice of the maritime industry and well worth reading. The last 30 years of my active seafaring career was as a harbor pilot in SW Alaska which gave me an overview of the industry as it progressed through the era described in Mark's memoir. The book included interesting details beyond most accounts of seafaring. Well done.

Couldn't put the book down, read it in one setting. Book easy to read and kept my attention. He is a good writer, the only comment I have is what did he do after his last trip? Is he still at sea?

I was raised in Vallejo, the site of the academy. I went to High School with a friend that went to the Maritime Academy. His description of academy life and life on board maritime freighter is very much as stated in the book.Good book. Must say that our time was much earlier. We graduated from Vallejo high school in 1955.

I really enjoyed this book. It brings to life what a difficult occupation merchant marine can be. Living in close proximity of with folks you really don't like can get old quick. This book was written well and was hard to put down. Thanks Mark! , one more thing, I know there's a lot of hard working folks doing a great job.
