I usually never write reviews, good or bad, but I feel I needed to warn others that are getting this to study for boards. I received this on time, and flipping through I noticed some of the drugs were repeated. On further examination I found that pages 151-214 were repeated in the book between pages 214 and 279. This would have been okay, but pages 215-278 were completely missing . This is a major quality control issue and I am very disappointed in Kaplan.
This is a good book with good info. However: a note for people taking the NCLEX: You do not need to memorize 300 meds. The most valuable part of this book is the part discussing drug name suffixes - if you know your suffixes and the general side effects for each group/type of medication, you can extrapolate while taking the test. This book has that info, although google would as well.
I brought this book in order to help me to pass NCLEX RN exam, but all this list is available on the main KAPLAN review book. Not worth investing if you have the Kaplan book. The book is also really badly designed as the drugs are listed on the front and the side effects are on the page after, making it none user friendly as you have to change between pages constantly.
There is a very large amount of pages missing from this book. 215 to 278 are missing. I didn't notice it until I had to search for a specific drug on those pages. Certain drugs are in the index but not in the book.
Super helpful for studying. I have a Davis Drug Guide which gives way more information than can be remembered. This little book keeps it short and sweet so you can get down to the most important information about each medication.
I had no idea where to begin studying for the NCLEX, especially when it came to the many drugs. This book breaks down the drugs by category with key indications, side effects, etc., making studying much more manageable. It allowed me to learn drug suffixes without getting overwhelmed or confused. You can also take the pages out of the book and use them as flashcards if that is how you study. Using this in conjunction with the in-person Kaplan class was 100% worthwhile.
To be honest, I thought this guide would be a little more helpful by listing food/drug interactions, not just side affects. I used this book as more of a reference for what category certain drugs fell under (i.e. Cardiac, antipsychotics) but found myself using other sources to gain a deeper understanding of the drug- not just the common side effects of N/V
I wish I would have bought this on the first day of nursing school! Small and handy, with concise explanations. Easy to navigate, and helpful for comparing meds in each class.There were quite a few meds mentioned in Kaplan practice questions (which required specific knowledge on the med) that weren’t included in this book. However, I wouldn’t expect much more from Kaplan. Overall gets the job done, and very much worth the investment.
