About the Author
Amy Myers, M.D., is a specialist in autoimmune diseases whose career was set in motion by her own experience dealing with autoimmune issues. Myers graduated cum laude from the Honors College at the University of South Carolina and earned her medical degree at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. This is an expensive cookbook but at least it is hard cover so I gave it 2 stars. Dr. Myers recommends a lot of inflammatory recipes with high FODMAP foods, which is a diet used for SIBO and IBS patients by the medical community. So if you are any of these people, do not purchase this book because it will cause greater problems with the digestive tract, inflammation, etc. She substitutes Casava and Tapioca flours to satisfy the carb cravings but again, these are high FODMAP ingredients and not only will you not lose weight, you will become increasingly more "autoimmune" hypersensitive. She has not done her research, in my opinion. It's a Paleo style cookbook of sorts, but Autoimmune it is not. In one recipe she combines apple and pear, two of the highest FODMAPs of the top 40 ingredients list you cannot have while you are healing. In case you didn'tknow, FODMAPs are the chemistry of foods and what each food does to the system to create leaky gut and dietary malabsorption by Monash University Laboratory. They are: Fructose (a Monosaccharide), Mannitol and Sorbitol (Polyols), Fructans and GOS (Oligosaccharides), and Lactose (a Disaccaride). I use a phone app for shopping and my gut is healing. Try doing low FODMAP for 10-12 weeks to address malnutrition, leaky gut, critical illness, mental illness, cognitive impairment, anxiety, inflammation, chronic fatigue, etc. This is far better than using a cookbook that has not been truly researched to enhance healing with autoimmune conditions. Good Authors for Autoimmune are: Dr. Izabella Wentz for Hashimoto's; Dr. Patsy Catsos, MS, RDN, LD for IBS ("The IBS Elimination Diet and Cookbook" from Amazon) for starters, and there are many, many more.
Much of the information & quite a few of the recipes are either already in her book (The Autoimmune Solution) or on her website. The recipes I tried did not taste good & were time consuming. I’ve disappointingly made Coconut Collagen Fuel Bites, Pesto Pizza, Root Vegetable Pancakes, Sweet Potato Biscuits and Turkey Pot Pie. “Peanut Butter†Cups, gross, don’t bother - the taste/texture was nowhere close to PB (I used coconut butter per recipe because I don’t like tiger nuts).What was good from the book? Salads, some of the soups & roasted vegetables from her recipes - all pretty basic and easily found elsewhere. Overall I have found better recipes on Pinterest (w/reviews from people who have actually made the recipes) - just search for AIP recipes.
Amy Myers reversed her own autoimmune condition by addressing the root causes of her illness and diet played a HUGE role. She continues to follow the same dietary program that she recommends to her patients and community.We actually ate out together in Melbourne at the recent Bioceuticals Symposium and I saw her put The Myers Way® (her proven program) of eating into practice at the restaurant, making sure everything she was eating was safe and would not trigger an autoimmune flare. Our server worked hard making sure all her questions were addressed in a satisfactory manner and she set a great example for all of us.She does this in her wonderful new cookbook, setting a great example and guiding you to make the right choices in order to reduce inflammation, heal your leaky gut and help you move toward the optimal health side of the autoimmune spectrum and stay there. Amy inspires you to cook delicious meals at the same time. She helps you change the way you look at food, both when you’re cooking at home for our families, and when we’re eating out and traveling.Some of the recipes I’m really looking forward to trying are the creamy zucchini-basil soup, the herbed roast chicken, the world’s best Asian flank steak, the rosemary sea-salt crackers (made with cassava flour), the spinach artichoke dip (I’ll replace the spinach with low-oxalate dino kale), raspberry cheesecake bites (I’ll make it with blueberries instead of high-oxalate raspberries), and the apple crisp.There is no perfect eating plan for everyone and Amy has created this eating plan and recipes to cater for the majority of those with an autoimmune condition. I really appreciate that recipes are marked as being autoimmune-friendly, thyroid-friendly, suitable for candida and SIBO, and low histamine. However, if you do have oxalate issues you will need to adjust some of the recipes. Also, if you have issues with collagen making your anxiety or insomnia worse then I recommend adding some protein powder to the recipes that call for gelatin or collagen (and even considering a trial of tryptophan).This cookbook is the perfect companion to The Autoimmune Solution, a wonderful book that introduced The Myers Way®, empowering so many to reverse their autoimmune conditions.It’s a wonderful new cookbook that inspires, guides and empowers and I’m going to be recommending this book to the anxious women in my community, many of whom also have an autoimmune condition.Trudy Scott, Food Mood Expert and Nutritionist, author of "The Antianxiety Food Solution"
I have been cooking AIP for about 2 years and make lots of yummy stuff from unusual ingredients. I've learned how to cook without eggs, gluten and many other 'substitutions". Always looking for fun new recipes, I was excited to try this new cookbook. OMG!! Do not waste your money. The ingredients are great but the end products mediocre flavors, bad textures and are NOT crowd pleasers. I made the "Creamy"Ceasar dressing with preservative and thicker free canned coconut milk and ended up with a watery, bland "dip"/ dressing that ended up as a soup under the salad. The blackberry dressing was boring and also watery.Next came waffles. OMG....these turned into a gooey pile of (expensive!!!) dough that I had to waste. Our ingredients are pricey to just have to toss, not to mention food waste. So, I don't recommend this cookbook at all!!!!!!
