“A beautiful tribute to our four-legged friends that’s sure to put a smile on your face.” —Modern Dog “Captures photos of dogs just as they are, full head-tilt, snout in the lens, tongue lapping at the air—just being dogs. . . . Talk about a comfort read.” —New York Magazine’s The Cut “Dog lovers won't be able to resist canine photographer Elias Weiss Friedman's new book, The Dogist. . . . Flipping through the pages will make the day of anyone who adores animals.” —InStyle.com “This gorgeously shot ‘Humans of New York’ for canines is the perfect gift.” —New York Post “If Humans of New York and the Sartorialist had a canine love child, it would be the Dogist.” —Publishers Weekly “This is quite simply my favorite book of the season and I love that Elias champions a wide range of dogs, from fancy uptown breeds in NYC to scruffy rescue pups as far away as China. The book is grouped according to type (puppies, working dogs, dogs in raincoats, small breeds, etc.) and tells some incredible stories, like those of dogs rescued from fighting rings who are now certified therapy dogs. Whether you’re picking up a copy for yourself, a loved one or early holiday shopping, The Dogist is a must-have for any animal lover. It’s a celebration of the reasons why we love our pets so much, and how much they bring into our lives.” —DesignSponge.com “Friedman . . . combines his love of dogs and photography in this lively collection of over 1,000 photos. Even readers who wouldn’t consider themselves dog lovers will have a hard time resisting this heartwarming collection of smiling, barking purebreds such as pit bulls, bulldogs, and Labs, as well as adorable mutts.” —Publishers Weekly “Delightful. . . . Animal portraiture enthusiasts may be especially interested in this title as an exemplar of the genre.” —Library Journal “Elias’s photos are a joy. Full of personality and fun.” —William Wegman

Don't get me wrong…I am a HUGE fan of The Dogist! Elias Weiss Friedman hit the nail on the head with his Instagram account. His photos make my household laugh, cry and gasp with ooows and awwws. But I am sorry to say that the design and layout of this book doesn't do his photos any justice. Someone needed to be told less is more. Instead of this being as special and unique as his Instagram postings, this book falls short. I am disappointed. I have attached a picture of a spread - there is a shot of a Borzoi named Rhett (with pink dye on it), this was one of my favorite shots ever and it is tiny and jammed into the binding of the book. Sad. I was really hoping this book would represent Elias Weiss Friedman's amazing talent. In the end, I am keeping this book to support him and his efforts but I hope his next book has a new designer!
I love all dog books, so you could say I loved this one too. The pictures are really great and for someone just flipping pages this might be a 5-star book. But all there is (except for dog name and breed) is lots of pictures of dogs. Which is nice, but as a dog lover, I wanted more. Just look at the dog's face on the cover, you want to know more about him... this book just isn't that. So 3 stars, I just liked this book as "just okay".
What an amazing collection of dogs! We are dog lovers in our family and I gave this book to my daughter as a Christmas gift. She loves it so much! She remarked "I will never be sad again, as I can always look at this book and it will cheer me up!' She has been keeping it by her bedside and looks at often. Our dog is getting jealous of the book as my daughter looks at it so much and makes those "awwww" noises that he feels are reserved for him! Some reviewers have commented that less is more and would have liked larger photographs instead of pages chock full of dogs, but when I received the book I realized that it's all themed. There are pages with dogs with eyes closed, some of dogs with those extra long tongues, some in pairs. Each page brings on fresh oohs and aahs. I love looking at the individual dogs on the themed pages, they're all so adorable. Elias Friedman has done an extraordinary job in capturing the dog's spirit. It brings forth so much emotion from me, and I want to go meet them all. They say your stress levels are much lower if you have a dog and regularly interact with it. That's certainly true, but this book is like a massive stress reliever too!
Beautiful photos. They are quite tightly packed, but I appreciate the sentiment of trying to fit as many of these amazing dogs into the book. I didn't have trouble flipping through, even with the quantity of photos. I was, however, very disappointed that the captions for the photos aren't included. I would have much preferred fewer images with their respective text descriptions. The Dogist is my favorite Instagram account, and I purchased this book for my dad specifically because I knew he would love and appreciate the captions as much as I do. He'll still like the photos, but it's just not the same. Perhaps that's my fault for not doing more research before purchasing. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but still a beautiful book.
I decided to look through this book one day when I was really stressed. I had some where to go that I didn't really want to. The sweet doggy faces with just their names and what breed they are and how old they are soothed me and made me smile. Some of the dogs have clothes which I think is silly but people put a lot of thought into dressing their dogs. Some were chewing rawhide bones and their faces are funny. All dogs are beautiful to me so this book was ice cream for the eyes and I made up stories for all of them.
I am one of The Dogist's biggest fans. His work just makes me so happy. This book is wonderful. I got mine and immediately looked through the whole thing in one sitting. As anyone who follows and loves The Dogist knows, Elias has a way of capturing each dog's unique essence. If you are a dog lover but not already a fan of his you will be after getting this book. If you ARE already a fan, support his work and buy this book.I plan to get a bunch for Holiday gifts.(I disagree with another poster's comments about the format since it is misleading; only some of the pages are in a collage-like format and even they are wonderful.)Already can't wait for The Dogist II
Elias Friedman has done an incredible job of putting together an engaging and enjoyable book of dog portraits. Fans who know Elias best through his work on instagram (@thedogist) will be happy to see what he has done with his first book. He separates the book into fun sections, eliciting "awws" at every page. It's a great book whether you have dogs or not. Definitely a recommended buy!
Great book. It's got large double page pictures and lots of smaller pictures, all sorted by interesting things, like dogs with special Eyes, or in Water etc. And it also tells their breed and their name. Excellent book. Excellent as a gift. Wish it had more pictures of my dog's type, but I found some that looked like him. Large variety of dogs in all shapes and sizes, even 3 legged dogs, and dogs with 1 eye. Everything. Sorted, so, for example, all the 3 legged dogs are together. I especially liked the pages of dogs with heads tilted. Also tells little stories about some of the dogs.
