In the 1970 s, Brown traveled extensively throughout Africa, India, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Brown would take a large paper map, cut out the city center, folded it up and slip it into his pocket, thus preventing him from looking like a tourist in areas where discretion is the better part of travel. This was his tool for surviving.After many years on the road, Brown settled back in New York and decided to start his own business, based on the adaptations he had made to maps in his travels. His goal was to give someone the ability to navigate easily in unfamiliar terrain.He started with a new map format: the accordion fold. Such a simple idea, but at the time it was revolutionary. No more struggling to fold an awkward, oversized paper map. This new format would enable the user to blend in like a native, instead of stick out like a tourist. Brown then added lamination to ensure that the map would be a lasting tool.More important than the format was the design of the map itself. It had to be a map that not only succeeded above and beyond any map he had used, but was esthetically appealing as well. The look of it had to be as striking as the functionality. Color was introduced in a way that was never seen before in a map - vivid purple for water, soothing gray for the background of street grids, gold to highlight elements of the map. Clarity, conciseness and convenience in a very stylish package.Building the business was a 24 hour job. Brown sold the maps during the day, zipping around Manhattan making deliveries on his Harley Davidson. At night he packed the orders and did the design work. I LOVE the Streetwise maps! They show the major attractions, hotels, parks,transportation line, etc per city and are very sturdy. I can carry them in my purse and not worry that thy will be crumpled or illegible! I will keep getting these for major cities I visit that I don't know. Can study them PRIOR to my visit and pretty much know the basic layout before I travel there.
Good price!! Good quality!!... I liked, it is small (thin) enough to pack and transport locally or overseas, big enough to be read as a passenger when traveling by train, airplane, bus, or car. I definetley will make my travel information map purchases at this Amazon site!! Also. delivery was before promissed by Amazon.
Agree with previous comments, awkward layout that requires constant flipping. Also the portion of the city that is shown at a larger scale is not particularly helpful, I would have preferred the whole map be at the same scale. But despite it's drawbacks, the map will still get you from point a to point b.
The idea is nice but the ability to read the street names, find specific intersections is semi lacking. Depending on your needs (extent of city, small streets) this map will hold up in the rain/abuse of constant use.
Streetwise maps are the best, and this is no exception! Love how public transportation is included, as well as landmarks. The map is tough and waterproof. I will never use any other maps than these.
Bought this for first-ever trip to Budapest. Type terribly tiny, and I would have returned it, but thought it might be good "insurance" in case I really got lost! Never did. Why?The hotels (we stayed at the "Castle" Hilton) have plenty of free maps in English for writing on ('you are here, and here's how you get to where you're going'). The front desk folks gave us several over the course of our stay. The free maps worked great. We also used the maps in our very excellent tour book about Budapest.I'm barely 50 and only need glasses for reading. The last thing I want to do when navigating is to whip out reading glasses and squint at a map. I think this map really isn't for tourists--it's for someone visiting and staying in a residential area and needing much more detail than the average tourist. Save your bucks. Prices in Budapest are pretty reasonable, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to spend the money on great meals, and admission to the many great places to see and learn at, and then soak in one of the many Turkish baths in Budapest. Aaaahhhh!Left this map (and the useless one we bought for Vienna) in the room, not bothering to pack them back home. Maybe a resident of Budapest can use it.
It doesn't show enough outside of city center for my use. It is great if you are only staying within 2 miles of city center.
I used the map on my recent trip to Budapest, and compared to the other maps, was much better, easier to read, water proof (it rained for half of the trip). I rode my bike everywhere, and had the map on hand to find where I was. I highly recommend it. Granted, it only shows the most centric areas of Budapest, but that was all I needed in my travels.
