This book is an introductory must-read for anyone considering living in Belize. It covered all territories and gave an honest account of how safe or unsafe certain areas are. I consider it my go-to reference. There is a plethora of information on the benefits and rules associated with each type of residency status. One other reviewer had complained about there not being enough maps, but I must have a later edition as I found very helpful maps. If one needs more detailed maps, they can be purchased from another source - the included maps were more for reference than deep detail.
Belize is a fascinating community but not for the faint at heart. If you like adventure but you are a cautious value driven investor you will appreciate the pros and cons Lan Sluder displays in this very accurate book. Dual citizen since 2002; I have done well with calculated risk and reward and happy to advise others regarding all thing Belize real estate.People that love Belize usually visit several times, falling deeper in love before they are convinced of all the benefits.
Excellent, eye opening book about living in Belize. Some of the other books/websites you look at if you are seriously looking at retiring overseas, paint Belize as a trouble-free, tropical paradise. Sluder's book will give you a look at the rest of the story. The prevelance of property crimes (breaking and enterings, thefts...) is honestly presented. The book gives you a breakdown in a "report card" format of the desirability of various areas in the country, so a potential resident can make an informed decision. If you are thinking of a Caribean retirement destination where you don't have to learn a new language, get this book. It presents the good, the bad, and the ugly of Belize.
Not only is this a very informative book for those considering a move to Belize, but it has an added bonus. The bonus is that the author is gracious enough to respond to additional questions via email, and does so within 24 hours.I've tried not to overstay my welcome, but the author, Lan Sluder continues to make me feel right at home when I pester him with 'just one more question.' I feel like Detective Columbo with all of the questions that I've posed to him.There's a ton of information in this book and after reading it, you'll definitely know whether or not a move to Belize is right for you. Lan Sluder is an excellent writer, and as mentioned above, is also a very gracious person.
Very authoritative and concise explanation of life in Belize. I enjoyed reading this book immensely.I have one suggestion for improvement on this book. The author uses a grading scale to rate various aspects of Belize. A for this, B- for that, etc.I think that approach is too precise. It's hard to distinguish a B-, for example, from a B or a C+ when everything to a typical reader is brand new. I can distinguish a B from a C more easily. I hope that makes sense.
This book is awesome! It gives so much information and is very easy to follow. I'm contemplating a move to Belize and there is so much in this book that I haven't even thought about until I read it. I've reread parts of it numerous times and shared a lot of the info with my wife. The author knows his stuff!
This book was written by someone who is familar with Belize, and provides you with the truth as to what you will encounter when you arrive, not some rosy sales pitch. A very useful tool for anyone contemplating somewhere to live during the winter or as an escape from their country of citizenship. I recommend you read this book.
great info, easy read. nice to pass around to friends who are thinking of leaving here to retire. I decided NOT to move to Belize because of the BOT flies which when they bite you lay larvae under your SKIN, also because they require retirees to deposit $25,000 in their bank every YEAR for 5 years before you can apply to be a citizen, it didn't say if YOU get to use the money or it becomes Belize's, watch amazon's awesome video series called "Mad Dogs", its filmed in Belize, after seeing that I already didn't want to retire there.Yes it's beautiful and low real estate prices, but most of the areas are very poor and the buildings, streets etc aren't maintained also there is high crime. This book helped me in my decision NOT to retire to Belize and for that it's worth 4 stars.
