There are plenty of symbols included, they are organized according to shape and complexity, and there are meanings attached. But the meanings are the author's alone, have little relevance to other sources and there are no sources cited - these are the author's own ideas and don't have much relevance outside. The cons didn't matter much to me since I wanted it for design ideas, but anyone interested in the traditional meaning of symbols should look elsewhere.

This book is very small, which is not necessarily an indication of quality. However, this book is NOT an example of a carefully outlined and researched reference. Its scope is narrow, and many symbols are not labeled. There are other books out there that offer much more information at a better value.

"The Book of Signs" is an illustration-rich collection of Byzantine, medieval and related European symbols. The Dover Publications edition is a clean softcover edition of the work which is printed in the author Rudolf Koch's "magere deutsche" typeface (a Gothic / old-style German typeface similar to those used in Germany in the 19th century and earlier).Useful to the medievalist, the occultist as well as the fantasy roleplayer, the collection includes nearly 500 different symbols collected in 14 chapters. Symbols include Christian, astrological, botanical, and chemical ones from the Byzantine and European traditions; personal and family signs such as early monograms, stonemason's signs and armorial signs; and the Norse runes. The signs themselves are woodcuts, which combined with the older style Germanic typeface give the book a distinctive look. Chapters include a short introduction and most signs include a short description.The book's strength lies in its wide range of medieval symbols and its evocative visual look (woodcut symbols and German typeface). As a research tool it has limited utility, but for its graphic appearance it is a good choice for the layman. On a side note for AD&D gamers and World of Greyhawk enthusiasts, this work was used as inspiration by Gary Gygax for many of the symbols presented in the World of Greyhawk folio and 1983 boxed set.

I first found this book at my local library and fell in love with all the interesting and little known symbols. The author does put a Christian bent on a lot of the symbols that I could honestly due without. Even on some symbols with a clearly Pagan origin. For example The Triquerta, ( a symbol of The Triple Goddess) he claims is for "banishing evil spirits". The book was written (clearly) a VERY long time ago by an obviously very religious man, but the symbols themselves are so interesting that it is necessary to not get stuck on one mans interpretation. Once you can get past that, the collection of symbolism is enjoyable.

Good for references on just the symbol itself but lacks depth and additional information. The alphabetical text was in medieval calligraphy that was sort of difficult to read. The book itself is small and the front cover is a representation of what you'll be seeing in the book.

Weird font - which a shame. Would have been a good product without all the theatrics.

Pretty Basic but I like it's simplicity. Clear concise and to the point. Definitely a great starting point for any historic symbol enthusiast. Great portable size and light to carry for quick reference. Highly recommended.

I am buying these as gifts for 2 girls who love the Nutcracker Ballet. The coloring books are exactly what I wanted but the upper left corner of each book is noticeably damaged. Not suitable to give as a gift. Will have to return and purchase elsewhere.

The drawings have a lot more smaller images to color. With this book I don't think you can use jet pens. The images are way too small.

Love this book!!! The drawings are amazing, paper thickness is much more better than the past. I cannot wait to get started. This will definitely be a fun book to color!!

This collection of dolphin stories has climbed to the top of my considerable stack of valued books on the subject. I loved each and every story and felt informed even more so even though I have spent decades having experiences with dolphins myself. I love getting as many perspectives as I can and this book covers such a wide range. Beautifully compiled. A keeper.

This book was amazing. It was an elegant yet honest exploration of swimming with dolphins and dolphins in general. It was like taking an outdoor class with some of the world's best and most varied dolphin experts around the world. Nowhere else can I learn about dolphins in original pieces by Jean Michel Cousteau, Marc Bekoff, Sy Montgomery, Kathleen Dudzinski, Diane Ackerman, John Lilly, Paul Spong, and other stellar dolphin pioneers. I'm a marine biologist and yet I learned things about dolphins and interspecies communication that I never have learned anywhere else. It opened my eyes to new things about dolphins and people ... how dolphins save human lives, how people save dolphins, and how people can even unintentionally hurt dolphins because they want to be so close to them. I drank this book up, and when I see dolphins now, I relate to them so much more. The only downfall was that the book had some sad notes, but that is how the real life of a dolphin is. Overall I thought it was incredibly inspiring and I felt like I'd been swimming with dolphins for years after reading it!

Just read the blurb about the contributors of this very fine and thoughtful anthology. I have a sinking feeling I must be the "newage" person quoted as playing reggae music to belugas using tibetan gongs. That negative description is so far off-base of what I actually described in the book, that it demands a rejoinder. Yes I have used music, for over 30 years, to interact systematically with wild whales, as an active and direct experiment in interspecies communication. This work has been sponsored by the likes of the Smithsonian, the European Union, National Geographic, The Russian academy of Sciences, The World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, The US Navy, and a long list of private foundations. Over the course of the long term experiment, I have worked with musicians of many persuasions, genres, and nationalities including a few reggae musicians, and Tibetan Lamas (they didn't play gongs). The basic premise of this work is that, since everybody seems to agree that whales are both highly intelligent and acoustically perceptive, might music be an appropriate and positive means of building a relationship that shares the best of human culture?

Finally, a book that looks at dolphins and people from a scientific perspective and not just the standard New Age hype. It was exciting to read essays by the leading experts in this field - some of the world's leading nature writers and dolphin biologist together. The writers aren't afraid to take an honest look at how we influence dolphins, which may be surprising for those who frequent Sea World waiting for a free ride from a dolphin. Instead, look forward to a seminal collection about how far (or little) we've come since John Lilly first spoke about human dolphin communication 25 years ago.

I have to disagree. Non-scientific and many of the articles reference the harassment of wild dolphins without acknowledging the serious harm they're causing.

This book touched me so deeply. The stories are powerful and incredibly moving. It's a must read for anyone who calls themselves an animal lover. I have a new found respect and insight for the dolphins, as well as, the people who put themselves at great risk to save them. I, like many others, merely think about helping these wonderful creatures... thank God there are actually people out there that walk the talk and are making a difference for the lives of these amazing and beautiful beings. This book has lifted my spirits and inspired me in way that no other book has done before. Bravo!

"God Has a Plan for You" was an enjoyable read, although I must admit I did not care for the character of Ruth at the start. She came across as extremely judgemental. My heart went out to Samuel and in the end Ruth proved to be a good and caring friend. I expected Ruth and Samuel to get their happily ever after with each another, so I was a bit disappointed when that didn't happen. Maybe this is a storyline that will be developed further in the next book? Overall, I would recommend this quick read.

This is a continuation of Let go and Let God which you must read first. These 2 books should be combined into 1 book. The story could use more development and details. Too short.

It's a nice little story with a lot of focus on keeping the faith. The characters are easy to get to know and the writing was easy to follow, as was the story itself.

It was an act of meditation even reading the book and the wonderful way Nimue Brown has of weaving words into images and emotions. If you are looking for a new way to meditate and connect with nature and yourself, this is the perfect book for you.

This is everything I had hoped for when looking for a great meditation book. Clear description and an informative background on why things are done they way they are described.

It is so hard to find Druidic and Western forms of Meditation in such a condensed and easily approachable format!Nimue Brown has performed a great service to the Earth-Mysticism communities by sharing her insight into Awareness Living.This was one of those books that I consumed quickly while nodding emphatically. I loved practicing the exercises recommended by the author as well as contemplating the philosophical and ethical commentary she provides.I can't begin to recommend this book enough, though I have done a video recommendation on my youtube channel. The author does a good job of integrating meditation into druid practice. I will say that is the book with the fewest pages on the subject (s), however, it took me the longest to read. The author brings up some thought provoking ideas. I'm not sorry that I read it and do recommend it if you want to explore meditation.

Well, I think is a very good answer for the audience the book is intended for. Why are some animals big and others small? Because there are all kinds of animals in the world, some big and some small. I think it's a perfectly valid answer. If your kid needs more information you can teach him about evolution for an hour if you want. You have to understand the purpose of this book is having a lot of questions and a lot of content. If they start going deeper into answers then that means less content. I rather have more questions with simple answers than a few questions with 3 pages of an answer.Finally, another reviewer seems to be confusing this book for something else and tries to show the "inaccuracies" but only comes off as a trying to display his knowledge of things. We get it, you know how to use wikipedia, guess what? This is a book for "KIDS", if you want to show off how much you know why don't you review a PHD book on physics?This is a great book with tons of content and my kid loves it. It's not perfect, but that's why you're there as a parent.

I love this book. I got it for my son's 4th birthday and we really enjoy going through it. I love the pictures and that it includes little experiments to show and teach the whys. So farm, we really enjoyed pages discussing melanin and skin. Firstly, it was a really good way to discuss why some people have different shades of skin. Children are wont to just spout off what they see, without care to feelings or other social implications. My son's best little friend in the neighborhood is African-American and when we discussed this section, he immediately mentioned her and said "Jane has more melanin than I do!". I am glad that he seems to understand that everyone is different from one another in this scientific/reason manner, but without judgement. . I love that this book helps me explain things in a way of scientific causes of his observations. I love it and I will be buying others in the series.

I bought this book for my 7 year old son in an effort to encourage reading and present new and exciting facts for him. There are lots of pictures and interesting facts, but I think this may have been better for him when he was a little bit younger. Kids are always asking "why" and many times we adults just don't have the answer, so this would be perfect for quenching those inquisitions. I would suggest this for kids between 3-5.

This was a great book to give my curious 4 year old. We read a few stories out of it every night. Our favorite so far is "why do your toes wrinkle in the bathtub." Lots of great information but at a level where my daughter can understand it. I will definitely look into buying the other books in this series.

From the very first time I opened the book, each time I turned a page it resulted in that page simply falling out of the book. Please see the pictures. Perhaps I got a defective book, but watch out.

My 6 year old is so curious about everything. Asking why this why that all the time is great, but sometimes I need a break! Well guess what? This book is awesome! It’s very easy to read, has a great table of contents to easily find the answer to a question, and very colorful. I will be buying more in this series. So many encyclopedia type books are boring, but this one is very pleasing to flip through, read, and understand.

When Amazon had a special on books I was looking for something to get for my daughter to eventually read. She's 3 months old right now so obviously this book is far too advanced but I've had a good time reading it. I was a really curious kid, always wanting to know why. This book answers a lot of questions I had as a kid, and tons more. I'm hoping she turns out to be curious like me. They also make a book of why 2, which I ordered right after receiving this book.
