Since I received this book as a gift from an older coworker years ago, I've read this book a couple times and given it as a gift two other times. Spouse also loves it. Even though we each do not match up on all the points, it's been an excellent guide to better understanding and communicating for both of us. It was good when we were starting out in our relationship, and good for us now after more than a decade. Highly recommend.

Reminds me a lot of "Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus" but with a focus on the workplace. As a women in a male dominated workforce (US military), I found myself shaking my head and saying, wow, how many times has that happened and yes, I can relate to that. But even more so, I found myself laughing out loud! Great read!

One has to have an open-mind to be truly engaged in this book. There are differences in the way male and female communicate how we understand the same situation we encounter. This book is also thought-provoking in bringing to light, examples and scenarios that reveal a clearer picture if you were to step out of your body to watch and learn the outcome of the differences of the two species. What is also exciting to note is that male and female differences make living in this world a rather interesting one.

I love this book. I bought it years ago and loaned it to someone and couldn't remember who, and of course, they never returned it. I think it speaks volumes about this book that I felt compelled to buy it again. Women! Have you ever wondered why men will never stop to ask for directions, even if you're hopelessly lost? Do you wonder why, when you come home at the end of the day saying, "I can't believe what this person did to me today," only to be met with, "Well, what did YOU do?"If so, please buy this book. You will understand why men are how they are (and it's not male-bashing, it's just scientific observations), and maybe you will be able to help your man understand you better and you will understand your man better. I highly recommend it, although I had a few issues with some of the statistics in some of the studies, but overall, it seems to be pretty sound science (as much as the Social Sciences can be).

Great read. Deborah Tannen is a great author for those who have a casual interest in linguistics, but aren't linguists themselves. Anyone working in the field would find it over-simplified and too reliant on anecdotal evidence, but for the casual reader with an interest in the wonders of how language shapes our world, it's a very enlightening read.

"You Just Don't Understand" is a very readable book with plenty of examples and data to back it up. I found it to be amazingly accurate and it really has helped me communicate better with men. I know that sounds so weird, but there really are differences in how many men and women use language. For example, most men use language to convey information and to create a pecking order. Most women use language to create bonding and to create an even playing field without a pecking order. In understanding those differences and more, I am now better able to understand why a man may say certain things and hence better able to take it as it in the spirit it was given, rather than feeling hurt. It also has helped me speak to men in a way that they will understand and will not see as demeaning myself in the pecking order.Over all I found this book an entertaining read and very practical. If you have ever been frustrated in a conversation with the opposite gender, this book may shed some light.

As a geezer who has spent his life studying "women talk" and proud of my insight---this book knocked me on my butt---and taught me how colossally ignorant I was on the subject.In short, Tanneh demonstrates that men and women essentially speak two different languages, and each poorly understands the other's language, resulting in frequent and inevitable misunderstandings. Almost every paragraph you find yourself (at least figuratively) smacking yourself on the forehead and saying, "Damn, that's true. I never realized that before."I've read the book a half-dozen times and insisted that my wife read it (about 20 years ago). According to my wife (a VP of a Fortune-500 company) the things she has learned from the book help her to cope with her male colleagues. My wife and I have even developed private phrases to avoid many of the common male/female linguistic misunderstandings. I believe that our very good married life has substantially improved as a result of reading this book.Even so, even understanding "women-speak", I still find it largely illogical---which only reinforces Tannen's thesis that men's and women's are simply wired differently---most easily observed in differences in the use of the allegedly common language.I consider this to be among the top three books which "altered my life for the better". This is a book to buy in hardcover, and re-read frequently. It is impossible to absorb everything in a single reading---or even three readings. I give a copy to each of my nieces when they reach roughly 17. Very basic

I am using this book in my class and know that it will be an asset to my students.

This has been one of my 6 year old grandson's favorite books. Friendly, non-preachy writing; illustrations clear and realistic. Not only does he learn about recycling, he also learns other processes: from timber to logs to paper making; from rainfall to reservoirs to faucet water to evaporation to rainfall; and his fave, nature's recycling and natural composting. The DIY projects are a bit beyond him, but when he gets a little older we will try some of them. Because of this book, he enticed us to take him to the local recycling center, which was a field trip I wouldn't have thought of and we all enjoyed it. This book, appropriate for pre-K through elementary school, helps raise awareness constructively and gently.

Wallace was “disgraced” at the Battle of Shiloh, but went on to serve capably and courageously. Following the war, Wallace pursued a successful political career before penning this work, which is acknowledged as the best selling religiously themed novel in history.Judah Ben-Hur is born to wealth and privilege as the son of a Jewish merchant in Jerusalem. His stunning fall and subsequent “resurrection” has been likened to that of the author, as has his religious awakening, as Ben-Hur’s path crosses and recrosses that of Jesus of Nazareth.Written in the late 19th century, much of the dialogue is in the form spoken during the time of Christ (i.e. sayest thou), but is easily understandable and at times quite beautiful. Nevertheless, there are periods in the story (most notably during Ben-Hur’s sojourn in Antioch) that are mind-numbingly boring as the author spends scores of pages in philosophical contemplation and florid description of the people and places that make up the story.My suggestion: Watch the movie. If you have already done so, I can’t say that reading the book will benefit your appreciation of the story.

This is a great classic, and the number one selling novel in the US in the 19th century. It is the original, without 20th century "improvements". The style is very old, but the depth is worth wading through. One thing that will put off readers who are not willing to be challenged is the dialog is in King James English (or semblance thereof). The reason for this is that this is "a tale of the Christ", as the subtitle indicates; our hero, Ben Hur, is a witness of events in the Gospels near the end of the novel. At the time the book was written, the only widely used English Bible was the King James, and it was considered inappropriate to "reword" the Bible. Therefore, any dialog from events in the Bible is taken verbatim from the King James, and for consistency (?), most of the rest of the dialog in the novel is also in King James English. Please beware of the fact that there is one edition of the "original" from the mid-20th century (published to go along with the 1959 movie) that updates the language and is easier reading, but the plot is different and the theology is missing. Like steak vs. hamburger, it does require a little more chewing, but the flavor is much better.

All I remembered about Ben Hur was the Charlton Heston movie, which I saw when I was young -- and all I remembered of that was the galley scenes and of course the chariot scene. The reason I bought and read the book was because of the title: A Tale of the Christ. About half way through the book, I did a Google Search on it and found that it was one of the most popular Christian pieces of literature of all time. I had no idea! I am only 82% of the way through the book, but will rank up there in the top 5 books of all time for me. I especially appreciate Ben Hur's struggle between his human desire for an earthly king, and his soul's need for a heavenly savior -- and the influences in his life to lead him to the truth. A book for all of humanity.

After reading The Robe this past spring I was inspired to read more classic Christian literature and Ben Hur topped my list, but it was a slow start. The language is old-fashioned and ponderous and took me a while to get used to. The description and imagery is minute in detail and while interesting, can be tedious to wade through. That said, the story was beautiful. I am always fascinated by juxtaposition of people’s lives in relation to history, especially the history surrounding the life and ministry of Jesus. The author does a masterful job of weaving Ben-Hur's story into the story of Jesus' life on earth. The characterizations are full and rich, the description of the settings is thorough and evocative, and the plot is well conceived, alternating between pulse-pounding action and philosophical/theological dialogue. Written as it was in the 19th century, this book uses King James English for the dialogue, which is notable, but I didn't find it overly distracting. I was thoroughly engrossed in the story from beginning to end.

Modern literature pales in comparison to how this story is told. Character development is deep and full. I have to say, I was surprised at the artistic license taken by both the Charlton Heston movie version as well as the 2015/16 remake. This story differs from both in marvelous ways. You won't be able to skim through this, it will force you to ponder and reflect. I'm so glad I decided to read this. A masterpiece!

I was exposed to this Christian tale as a kid watching the 1959 movie starring Charleton Heston. After seeing two other versions (CB DeMille 1920s version) and the latest watered down version (2016?) I tracked down the original novel written by the Civil War general. I was blown away - the film versions do not tell the complete story. The film version water down the story of the Magi, do not cover all of Messalah's personal background ( he had a girlfriend - the daughter of one of the Magi's), and the 1959 & 2016 versions do not expound on the books telling of Ben Hur raising 2 legions of Jews to fight for and support the Messiah. Remember that this novel (which became a best seller read by then US President Grant) was written in the 1870s so reading it requires more concentration.

This "book" was obviously self-published and not edited. It's bad. It's supposedly an anti inflammation diet book, but in one of the recipes (or recommendations) calls for honey. Everybody knows that sweets contribute to inflammation, especially honey, regardless of how good, "organic" (???), raw, or whatever. Honey is honey, and a great contributor to inflammation. Also, the paragraphing is weird; after every paragraph there are 2 spaces (!!). The spelling, while not terrible, it leaves much to be desired. The writing is not professional, and I don't know about you, but when I read something and I find words misspelled, my interest in the material flies out the window. You'd think that a writer, if not an awesome speller, would at least "spellcheck" with a click of a button.

Needed to be proofed and edited. Content is meager and lacking. Chart and table design was poorly done. Suggest doing the meals across top of chart and Days on the left so that cell contents were so broken. I have a nutrition and teaching background - there are much better sources of information out there. Meal plans - so, so.Try again, but please have someone proof, edit and actually apply your suggestions?!?

This book was just what i was looking for because im always looking for ways to stay healthy. The author goes over which to eat and not to eat and covers which foods to prioritize in the anti inflammatory diet which is essential. it was very well written and i plan on trying some of the good looking recipes in the book!

Not much mention of science. Typos and incomplete sentences. Hard to follow the flow. Did not leave me wanting to follow his advice.

Boy, did I learn a lot and this is coming from someone who researches and reads a lot. Great book that answers health issues, diet issues and has recipes to get you started.

This book is nothing but simple information that everyone already knows. There is nothing in it that you can't get a thousand other places. A complete waste of money.

It's not really very detailed, but it tells the reader the basics about an anti-inflammatory diet so is helpful.

I have just added the Kindle edition of this amazing book I can keep it with me. It was my great privilege to know the men in this book. Glen McDole, Rufus "Willie" Smith, Roy Henderson, my uncle Evan Bunn and my father Clarence Clough were my heroes and role models throughout my formative years. When I was a child, every family trip we took was routed to visit one or more of these men and their families. I hope enough of their integrity, loyalty and perseverance rubbed of on me to make them proud. I was certainly proud of them. I miss them all.Since Dad and Uncle Evan were not on Palawan at the time of the massacre, Mr. Wilbanks does not mention what happened to them after the war.Dad and Evan Bunn continued as POWs working in the mines in Japan until the end of the war. Evan had heard so much about dad's sister that he proclaimed he would marry one of them. When the two returned to the U.S., they stopped to see Evan's family then went on to Dad's home. Evan married Dad's sister Anita November 10 1945.Clarence Clough died September 6, 1985Evan Bunn died May 12, 1989

As a teacher, I was appalled at the atrocities committed by the Japanese during WW2. There is not much mention of it in the history textbooks; most WW2 mentions consist of: the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor; Hitler & the Holocaust; Bataan Death March (maybe); America ushers in the Atomic Age when Hiroshima & Nagasaki were bombed.Mr. McDole's story was riveting, stomach-turning and blood-pressure-raising all at the same time. I had never heard of Palawan before reading "Unbroken", the story of Louis Zamperini and his odessey as a POW in Japan. Mr. McDole writes about maggot-ridden rice balls - that was their food, prison guards who would brutally beat prisoners for fun, and setting prisoners on fire - then shooting them when they ran.This is a story of not only historical happenings, but also a story of the Marine spirit. I have never met a Marine personally (my family was Army), but the Marine attitude of never leaving anyone behind and overcoming, just to rub their captors' nose in it, is inspiring.I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in military stories. I cried, I cheered, I became angry at times. Any book that can rouse so many emotions in me, deserves 5 stars.

Non-Fiction Books written about our unknown heroes, who miraculously survived the harrowing daily threats of death and torture, in War, should be taught in every educational institution in our nation. My Father, Father in Law and many uncles who wore the uniform during WWII, were placed in Harm's Way, and were all fortunate to come home. Some went on to Honorable Military careers and were involved in two other wars. These men and some women were born in the 1920s many hardships. The WWII came along. They truly were Magnificent.

In reading this excellent 165 page book I have walked with Glenn from his home in Iowa to his enlistment,to Corregidor, to Palawan,the war trials and back home to his funeral in 2009.This book gives you the complete experience of this brave marine up close and personal.You get to meet his friends,some of the Japanese guards and feel their experiences in vivid plain easy to read words.There was only 1 guard who I will look up on the computer who ever showed the prisoners any kindness,why do we as humans treat our fellow humans so wickedly ? We will all die some day and answer to our creator so why mistreat people along the way ?--Anyway if you like war stories get this book,you will not be dissapointed.

This is a terrific book; read and share. I was fortunate enough to meet Glenn McDole when he was working at the Polk County Sheriff's Office in the mid 80s. He was an impressive man, even in his later years. As a videographer for a Des Moines TV station -- my reporter and I interviewed Glenn and put together a feature story on his years as a POW and the tragic Palawan Massacre. What made the story so special and touching is that it was all in Glenn's own words. That feature story won a state broadcasting award. Though heartbreaking, I have twice read "Last Man Out" and probably will again. Those POWs went through hell and so few made it out. I'm glad Glenn did, and that he was able to tell the story of the horrible war crimes against Americans. Bless his soul!

I've had a number of conversations in the past with POW`s of the Japanese. I could listen to them tell their stories for hours. For some reason it is a part of WWII history that I don't believe has been given the attention it deserves. To think that 40% of prisoners of the Japanese were killed during the war versus 2% of prisoners of the Germans is incredible to believe . Couldn't put the book down.

My father told me about his cousin who was starved to death in a Japanese Prisoner of War Camp, and I know that few men survived this experience. How great it is to hear the story of one man who persisted and was determined to escape the final day as the Japanese killed the prisoners. The story told here, complete with descriptions of the men he knew and how they struggled with the extreme cruelty of the Guards and Officers of the Japanese, show us how this history should never be forgotten. Once you start the book, you will find it hard to put it down.

I chose five stars because my uncle Elmo was one of the eleven who got out. He was a troubled person that would not talk about his time spent at Palawan, even when he had been drinking, and it took me awhile to figure out why he was like he was, he grew up in the depression and his time at Palawan made him a troubled man. I think if most people today went through what they did, there would have not been any survivors.
