I don't know about "plot". This is a collection of documents written for a variety of purposes not a story. What it did do was astonish me that the leaders of even the earliest of the Egyptian leaders displayed wisdom and intelligence to a degree I did not expect. Miriam Lichtheim did a marvelous job of presenting each piece before you read it so you know what you are looking at.

Perhaps I am being a bit pedantic in my mediocre review of _Ancient Egyptian Literature_, but the flaws in the translation and the relative narrowness of its scope compared to other anthologies warrant a solid 3 star review. Lichtheim's introduction is fantastic - its explanation of the role and importance of Egyptian writing strikes a perfect balance between clarity and academic exposition. However her translation of the Htp di Nsw ("Hotep di nesu" - a formulaic prayer common throughout Ancient Egypt) immediately caught my attention.The prayer ("An offering the king makes ...") should be translated with the preposition "for" or better, "to" ("An offering the king makes to [insert diety here: Ra, Set, Anubis ...]") - yet Lichtheim has is as "An offering which the king gives and Anubis ..." which really makes no sense at all given the context and purpose of the prayer not to mention it is simply incorrect. Admittedly I am being nit-picky here, but such a basic error brought into question the accuracy of the rest of the literature she translates. This minor issue aside, the selection of literature in the anthology is good: Lichtheim includes autobiographical stelea, excerpts from the Book of the Dead, songs and hymns and a handful of prose tales. Taken as a whole, they give a solild overview of Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom literature. Were this the only book on the subject, it would warrant a much higher rating from me. However, it is not. The Literature of Ancient Egypt: An Anthology of Stories, Instructions, Stelae, Autobiographies, and Poetry; Third Edition has many of the same inscriptions and narratives included here (and several that are not, although to be fair, Lichtheim's anthology here is only one of three volumes). To compare apples to apples, Simpson's anthology has more Old Kingdom narratives and instructions, and more Middle Kingdom religious literature._Ancient Egyptian Literature_ is fine - good, even. But if you are interested in more detail (with a better translation), I recommend Simpson's anthology.

I took an Egyptian History class at Indiana University. Every week we had a writing assignment due and I often used this book to cite information and provide points for my arguments and assumptions. This book is very helpful and it is fascinating for anyone who is curious about Egyptian History. The stories can be a bit convoluted at times and many require rereading to understand but overall, this is a great book for anyone interested in Egyptian History.

This is a wonderful, but somewhat too brief, survey of literature from the Old Kingdom to the Middle Kingdom. Texts such as The Maxims of Ptahhotep and selected passages from several versions of the Pyramid Texts are included. In fact, many of the didactic writings of OK to MK are included, which makes this book invaluable for anyone interested in ancient Egyptian conceptions of morality and correct behavior.

A good book about Egypt

When I was learning to read Middle Egyptian, it was Lichtheim who kept me on track. She has a wonderful gift for translation. Her translations, while very close to literal, somehow manage to carry the atmosphere of the original without sounding as bizarre as a literal translation would.

This is a must have. If you're interested in ancient Egypt, then you should get their ancient texts in full form and not just a commentary made by authors in books. This is as close to ancient egyptians and their thought as we'll ever get.

The thoughts, hopes and fears of men and women from the time of the very beginning of the written word, speak to us in this book and tell us the beginning of the story of a great civilization that lasted for three thousand years.

Very well written book for young readers. We learned a lot. Interesting format. Looks like a book report a kid wrote. Lots of facts and pictures of the artist and their paintings.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. You would be doing yourself and your children a favor by purchasing this! I learned more than what I thought I knew, and my 8 year old ate it up. I love that this book can connect with adults and children alike. A must buy for anyone wanting to expand their children's knowledge of an incredible painter!

I wanted something to spark my 6YO son's interest in art. This book sure did. He asked me to read it to him a 2nd time right on the spot. He also spotted a Van Gogh print that I brought home. This is a fine series. I also got the Degas which wasn't quite as interesting but he still liked it. I just ordered Picasso and a few others. Get the Van Gogh and if your child loves it, try some of the others. (I also liked that this mentioned Van Gogh was very depressed once at loving a woman who didn't love him back.)

Great starter for children. 12 Yo started to make similar painting immediately

Wasn't ready to explain the shooting of oneself to my six year old, but I was reading this book aloud and didnt catch myself in time when it got to the part about Van Gogh SHOOTING HIMSELF. It may be true and all, but I wish they could have said it in a different way in this very short book. I actually ended up explaining mental illness and suicide because of this book. I guess it was bound to come up at some point, but be warned it is in this book for kids. Otherwise, cute book, very thin, small pics, but clever enough.

Nice story for various ages. The kids really liked the story and the pictures were well done.

I used this book to introduce art to my 1st grader. The content is colorful, simple to understand, and inspiring. I encouraged my 1st grader to re draw some of the pictures. She had a blast and of course they were better than the originals :-)

Although the text appears geared for early primary, the detail of the pictures suggests middle elementary students may enjoy singing the song along with the pictures. The book will give some understanding of colonial times and revolution.

This one and "Rip Van Winkel" with illustrations by John Howe both belong with the revolutionary war unit. The author fails, perhaps deliberately, to cite critical recent peer-reviewed studies that show risks of fracking shale formations. Fugitive methane emissions based on ambient measurements show much higher rates than either EPA or Univ. of Texas method of bottoms up accounting. Shale exploration companies have stacked up enormous debt prior to this year's price decline. Toxic gas release has resulted in increased birth defects as explained by peer-reviewed research by McKenzie et.al. from the Colorado School of Public Health. My daughter loved the first book & so, she's getting the rest of the series for Christmas. She is 5 but, honestly I don't mind reading them either!

This series is so much fun! I love reading it with my 6 year old. It's almost like a "Harry potter" type story but about ponies attending a magic academy. The story line is compelling for both kids and grown ups. Great read!

This is a good collection, and written in beautiful verse. This is probably my favorite collection of classical plays, mostly for the beautiful delivery. I was sad when I could not find a similarly lyrical collection of other plays by Euripides.

Frankly, there's little to be improved on. The translations are highly readable, and they benefit from the high qualities I've mentioned in earlier reviews of earlier volumes in the Grene/Lattimore series.One major thing is lacking--a detailed biography of Euripides, like those present in the volumes on Aeschylus and (I believe) Sophocles. Also, the editors continue to take their reader's knowledge of Greek mythology for granted. The reader should bring a weighty knowledge of Greek history and mythology (including of the Pelopennesian War, since this is Euripides), or be prepared to miss out on a few metaphors.

Great shape, minor wear.As for the content itself I enjoy the ancient greek literature and although I did enjoy the stories in this book I do see why Euripides was considered the least successful of the three tragedians of his time. He will go off on tangents that stray from the story line, with that said it is still worth reading.

Was a required reading for my college course. Really gives you an idea of the Greeks and culture during the time.

Best speciality cookbook I've ever owned. Recipes are diverse and delicious. Ingredients are sometimes exotic--but so are the flavors on your plate! I live in a small community and have found most ingredients locally; for a few items I've located an easy substitute on google. I have purchased this book for three other people who have loved it. I have been using the recipes for almost a year and each one is a new feast--not a remodel. I generally like straightforward cookbooks--"the facts and nothing but the facts." But in "Bean By Bean" you can take or leave the stories and histories. The recipes themselves are clear and not overly complicated. This cookbook has put much needed pizzaz in our kitchen. A fabulous cookbook.

I've been going through a beans-and-grains phase for the past few months. Soaking, cooking, and freezing are pretty much part of my routine - but I tend to get into a rut in terms of recipes, once I find something I like, is easy to make in a pretty big quantity, and my family will eat. So we eat a lot of mjaddarah (with rice or bulgur) and bean/vegetable soups, or cold salads with beans and greens. I tend to flavor cooked beans with cumin/coriander, chilis, and stuff like that, and cold beans with coarse salt, a lot of lemon, and olive oil, as well as either fresh parsley, coriander, or mint. It's just the way I roll.I ordered this book hoping to learn something about beans and to get some inspiration for new ways of cooking beans, and I find it to be a really successful book. So far I've tried quite a few of the recipes, and all of them have been just excellent. as a pretty experienced home cook, I know how to read a recipe and to adjust the quantities and seasonings in order to suit our tastes, but the first time around, I usually make the recipe as it's given. The recipes in this book are easy to follow, they mostly contain ingredients that one can get easily enough, and they turn out great. Also, the author gives a lot of variations without overwhelming the reader. In most cases, it's easy to vegetarianize or veganize the few meatist recipes according to one's habits, and I guess that omnivores can also figure out how to add bacon if they're in the mood. Incidentally, I am so happy this book focuses on simple real foods and not on highly processed faux-meat - that's one of the things that tend to be a big turn off in some popular vegan cookbooks. I plan to make my way through more recipes in the near future.The author's writing is a pleasure to read - it's personal and funny, on the one hand, but it's never irritating, cute, or over the top. It's very knowledgable, but without being dry or didactic. To use Holden Caulfield's test, the author is someone you'd probably like to chat with on the phone (or over a coffee/tea/beer/glass of wine).I would really recommend this book to anyone looking to get more beans and grains into their diet or to someone who is vegetarian/vegan and is not interested in basing their nutrition on french fries and pasta or on expensive processed foods. The great thing about beans is that they're cheap, healthy, and tasty - and Crescent Dragonwagon's wonderful book will go a long way in making them accessible to home cooks.

Not only are the recipes in this book really creative,the stories that go along with them are so fun, informative and interesting to read!I recently became a type 1 diabetic and I have a heart condition. My doc said that I need to stay away from meat (heart problem) and that beans are the best food for humans. That we should all eat them as a main protein source. I thought, "ok so chilli ans tofu everyday for the rest of my life? How can I make BEANS my main protein source forever?"This book is the answer to that question.The recipes in this book made me realize that beans are God's gift to humans. Lol!They are so good and creative, I am in awe of the author and grateful for all of the research, time and attention put into writing this great cookbook.It reads like a book of short stories. Lots and Lots of great recipes for every palate. My go to book when I'm in the mood to cook something new.Easy to read and follow every day ingredients with a great twist to keep your cooking repertoire fresh!

About half of the recipes are soup. Most of the others are ordinary recipes for chilis and stew. I guess I was hoping for a wider variety.

I love the writer's quirky sense of humour and personal comments. Besides that, I have learnt much from her sound, practical advice. I am now cooking beans and pulses with confidence, rarely eating meat in any form since January 2018. She has assisted me to transition to a plant-based diet with no hungerpains.

Although wandering in its narrative and a bit "out there", this is still a good book to have on your shelf. For a cook with a small level of competence, this is a good springboard to help you understand the fundamentals of creating some nice meals or dishes using legumes. If you are able to be creative and change up recipes, this should help you with the background to lots of great new ideas. Crescent's explanation for de-gassifying beans will leave you without having to ask "Who cut the cheese?" an hour or two after the meal. Small easy tricks to get perfect beans will also make your dishes stand out just a bit more. Options to include meat or stay strictly meatless give this a dimension that other cookbooks generally bias completely one way or another. I would have rated higher, but like I mentioned, the book's narrative wanders a bit and yo need to jump around to make it work.
