After reading enough True Crime books, especially when they’ve been written by a particular author, you slowly become anesthetized; or to use simpler terminology you’re rendered physically insensible regarding how far an individual’s level of depravity can reach. After reading almost two dozen books where the murderer[s] have gone to extraordinary lengths to cover up their unbelievable heinous acts towards men and women, you reach a point where almost nothing they might do would be surprising. However, in this outing, the author of this book, Jack Rosewood, gives his readers a detailed, well-researched look at Wayne Williams, an individual whose dozens of victims, mostly black male children, started to disappear off the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. Given this specific trait of the victims, naturally the anxiety which arose gave the black community and the nation, the idea that these innocent children were being target by a xenophobic individual. These acts of violence became know as the Atlanta Child Murders, and it took an army of trained law enforcement individuals from a multitude of organizations to ultimately apprehend and arrest this mindboggling murderer. And just like the television program “You Are There” [1953-1971] hosted by Walter Cronkite, Mr. Rosewood allows his readers to observe the new investigatory techniques using fiber evidence [simply thin filaments of material that can be either organic or synthetic] that an individual had been at a specific location, and the profiling of individuals in order to identify the likely suspect[s] to a crime. However, Wayne Williams, who instead of his appearance, seemingly to be an unfashionable and socially inept and boringly studious individual; in reality had been the sadistic serial killer they’ve been looking for. And as in all of his books, the author endeavors to tell his readers what had been the possible reason for the transformation from a nerdy child into one of the most copious serial murderers of blacks this nation has known. For giving me and his readers another shocking, page-turning book, I’m giving Mr. Rosewood the 5 STARS he’s garnered.

But I remember this. I'm from Atlanta and lived through this time and before it and after it. This book could've included much, much more. I'm sure Ann Rule would've been much more descriptive. There were entire paragraphs that includes only one sentence. This didn't have to be the case. It seems the writer took newspaper articles written at that time and summarized them. The articles at that time included more information than this book. It was interesting, and for someone reading about this who is not from here, it will be more interesting than I found it to be. I'm sorry to not be more positive in my review. This really could've been a much longer book. The families of the victims and information about the victims and their lives would be been a caring thing to include. The losses of the lives and the impact of the losses would be been good to include. Feeling empathy for them...

kindle unlimited, normally don't single book, do the collection volumes and so on, just so much to read AND except for him, don't read true crime etc, as the writer & stories are predominantly gross out city {and Ii can talk about dead bodies etc while eating, so not me}, but freebie day and wanted to see what it was about, yet another book from the prince of gruesome. From the summer of 1979 through the spring of 1981, Atlanta, Georgia was held under siege by a serial killer and dozens of victims started to appear. The series of murders, which became known as the “Atlanta Child Murders case,” gripped the city of Atlanta with fear and shocked the nation because most of the victims were children. The fact that the victims were all black and mostly male caused many in Atlanta’s black community to fear that their children were being targeted by a racist conspiracy. In this true crime book you will read about how the Atlanta Child Murders case put a city under siege and how a task force of law enforcement officers from several different agencies eventually captured the killer. You will follow the investigation as the police use what was at the time fairly new techniques of criminal profiling and fiber evidence to capture and convict the killer. For many around the country, once the killer was arrested, it was difficult to accept. The killer was a young, nerdy-looking man named Wayne Williams. To many people his background didn’t seem to indicate he was a serial killer, but the professional profilers knew otherwise!

When we read books of true crime, for some reason we are intrigued. We want to take a peek, a look into the criminal mind, perhaps because it is so different than our own, or maybe it's that dark side we are afraid to explore and yet, we have the curiosity to just take a quick glance. Of course, as soon as we do, we want more information.Even if you are a seasoned campaigner of true crime, Child Killer: The True Story of The Atlanta Child Murders will surely raise more than a few hairs on the back of your neck. It was a first-class read and the author gave a perspective to these horrific crimes that was both fascinating and intriguing. This was one of the better true crime books that I have read recently.I would highly recommend this read to all fans of the true-crime genre. I’m also a big fan of Jack Rosewood so it’s another 5 Stars from me. Well done again!

Reading any of this authors books will never disappoint you as he does extensive research on both the criminal and victim(s). The only thing I hate about his books is they end. I always look forward to his next book.

When I first saw that Mark Lawrence was releasing a new trilogy of books in the same world as the Broken Empire Trilogy but in a previously unseen area with all new characters, I wasn't 100% sold on the idea as I really enjoyed Jorg in the first series. However, after spending a couple of chapters with the new viewpoint character, the Vagabond Prince Jalan and his counter-part the Honorable Viking Snorri, I was all in with this series. Jalan is the youngest son of the youngest song of the infamous Red Queen, and he's so far down the line of succession that he can spend all of his time drinking, gambling, and seducing all of the women at court. At the beginning of the book, he's had a series of bad bets and is heavily in debt to the wrong person, and decides to bring the impressive Viking slave, who had just won his freedom by giving an account of the movements of the Red Queen's enemies, to the underground fighting ring as repayment. What followed was a horrible series of events, where the two of them broke the trap set by the Silent Sister (the Red Queen's secret magical advisor) for a Powerful Undead Agent hiding in plain sight, mistakenly letting it escape while entwining the two souls of Jalan and Snorri together with opposing forces of light and darkness. This is the beginning of an epic journey where they attempt to undo the spell while gaining vengeance on the people that killed Snorri's family and his entire village.I had a lot of fun with this book, and I honestly think that Prince of Fools is an great introduction to Mark Lawrence's excellent writing, perhaps better than Prince of Thorns. The viewpoint character of Jalan is much more likeable than Jorg, especially on the outset, and even though he can be a coward, he also shows a lot of heroic tendencies. I also loved the interplay between Jalan and Snorri, which was incredibly entertaining and reminded me of a classic buddy cop pairing, but with swords/axes and sorcery instead of guns and mustaches. I would recommend this book and the whole series to any fan of Fantasy, and I think it could be a good intro to Fantasy to a reader that's new to it, as Lawrence really knows how to turn a phrase. His writing is definitely well above average for the Fantasy World of Books, and this book and series cemented him as one of my favorite authors.

Its impossible to write original fantasy these days. All of the archetypes have been created and the hero's journey is a well-trod road, "worn smooth by the passages of time" - as they say. What's a gifted writer like Mark Lawrence to do?In his Broken Empire trilogy, Lawrence wrote a trilogy where the hero of the book would have been the antagonist in any other. Good men were slain; heroes of their people just fodder who had the poor misfortune of being in young Jorg's quest for revenge. In Prince of Fools, Lawrence takes another interesting spin on things: we have the story as viewed by the sidekick. This is the grimdark version of Big Trouble in Little China, where our protagonist Prince Jalan is pulled (literally and unwillingly) along with the story of Snorri, a viking on his own dark mission of vengeance. Like Jack Burton, who just wanted his truck back, Jalan just wants a curse lifted so he could return to his business of boozing and carousing.Sure, the sidekick as the hero has been done before (another comparison could be made to Michael Crichton's The 13th Warrior), but rarely is the unwilling hero of the story so unwillingly unrepentant as Jalan and rarer still is it told by someone who has as much care for his words as Lawrence. Those who loved the Broken Empire trology primarily due to Jorg's take no prisoners attitude will have little in the way of patience or love for Jalan. But those who have a love of prose and character building should definitely pick this one up.

The Prince of Fools, narrator of this tale is as witty and lively as the Prince of Thorns. And that wit kept the novel entertaining to an impressive degree - BUT, it did not completely make up for a serious flaw in this novel - that there just isn't anything at stake for the hero.In the broken empire trilogy, the hero is on the knife edge - a murderer and a hero - and I thought this difficult feat was completely successful. I was enthralled. In this first book of the Red Queen's War, the Prince is on the knife edge of ass and hero. In those moments where that knife edge is most apparent, the book is really good. The rest of the time I was a bit bored as he lives adventures of a quest the higher purpose of which is a veiled in mystery and he is determined not to care about. The result is, I don't care much about it either.Towards the end, I skimmed a lot, hoping that I'd get more of the good stuff (the fool/hero -- hopefully with ever more hero) in the next book, and needing to finish this one in order to be up to date for the next one.So I'm going to pick up the next one. But if it's more of the same, I might just put it down.

A book with a unique tone and unique characters that falls flat mid-way though. The MC is written very well- a womanizing coward, he does everything he can to avoid pain and seek pleasure. When he is magically linked to a warrior viking with a curse that doesn't allow them to get far from each other... things start to get interesting. The problem begins when the book transitions to its second act. The travelling portion of the book drags terribly. This poor pacing combined with out of character behavior by the MC are the downfalls of the novel. While the MC starts out with extremely pointed opinions about---well everything, his sudden ambivalence about the journey/plot/goal left me feeling completely "meh".

Now, this one made me laugh. I loved it! Very cute children's book with beautiful illustrations. Any little boy or girl should enjoy this one about the grumpy little hedgehog.

Last year, my two year old son got a book Sneezy the Snowman for Christmas. Now, months later, we still have to read that at least twice a week. Because of how good that book is, and how much my son loves it, I bought this book by the same author. The great quality of writing, as well as great illustrations, continue with this book.If your child likes to be read to, likes to look at the pictures and make up his own stories based on what he sees, then I highly recommend this book, as well as others by Maureen Wright.

This book has wonderful illustrations which the children enjoyed and the story held their interest as well as mine. I have been to seePhil on Groundhog's Day and this book depicts the suspense as well as the delight as they wait for their beloved Phil to emerge and see or not see his shadow. What a clever idea to entice Phil out of his burrow when he is having such a wonderful winter's nap. Loved this book.

I brought this book to read to my son's first grade class on Groundhog Day. They enjoyed it, and it stimulated a brief discussion about the holiday. My son, at least, said it went very well. I admit I read it a couple of times on my own too. Cute story.

It's good for a toddler to see 'grouchy' in print. Great way to convey it...through a groundhog who doesn't want to wake up!

I loved the rhyming it teaches kids about poems. It also teaches them about helping others like the kids in the book were helping the groundhog.

Very sweet book. Nice illustrations!

The kids loved the simple story-line and the rhyme.

Fun, fun, fun! Who knew Puxatauney Phil needed so much encouragement. Very insightful. An enjoyable read at home or in the classroom.

Whether you are a homeschool veteran, just warming up to the idea of homeschooling, or are looking for new ways support your schooled-kids’ spark for learning, this is the book for you. Julie Bogart shares how to create an environment in our homes and our hearts to not only educate our children, but parent them in a way that deepens our family connections and creates passion for learning in our children. This is not a stuffy book about theories; it is practical and inspiring. Julie is honest and frank, drawing from her years of experience homeschooling her own children and coaching many other families along this same journey. In every chapter, Julie provides activities to do in your home, and questions to ask yourself so you can cultivate togetherness in your family and a rich learning environment, whether your kids are homeschooled or not.I knew I had a gem in the first chapter, where Julie shares ideas for creating magic in our homes. She says, “I wanted to create a warm memorable life for my kids and myself, not just an education...Happiness shouldn’t be something to end up with; it ought to be the by-product of a whole-hearted, fully lived life.”This is a parenting book, written through the lens of homeschooling. It is a guide I will refer back to regularly, my tool box for enchanting my children’s education. It’s not just about raising your own brave learners, it’s about becoming one yourself.

so i would give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars - I homeschool and I absolutely love books that give practical ideas and that encourage us moms and dads in this challenging but very rewarding endeavor. That being said what really bugged me about the book was the lack of any reference to Jesus or going to Him for help with any of your homeschool issues/needs etc. I must have mistakenly thought the author was Christian but after reading the book I dont think she is. Also the book had ideas like let your child explore cus words and watch horror movies if they want to ... be open to how wonderful online and video games are etc. I am coming from a home where are our oldest has a gaming addiction and i sincerely blame myself for not having discernment about gaming when i was younger. A lot of the advice just did not jive with my belief system and I truly believe that God helps us and guides, equips us to walk this journey out so if we dont go to Him first all the magic in the world is not going to accomplish much eternally speaking. The constant verbiage on enchantments and magical spells in reference to creating a magical homeschool environment also bugged me. Please note that I consider myself a conservative Christian but also a very fun homeschooling mom. We have had sensory bins, hands on science, slime, art supplies and station, paint on walls, etc :) since i can remember so no fuddy duddy here:)Would i recommend this book - maybe to my secular friends that dont mind that kind of thing. I liked her ideas about letting your kids pick what paper to write on etc as some people can really be controlling and miss the whole point of homeschooling. Homeschooling is not recreating school at home. Makes me sad to see that.

If you are a homeschooler, Julie Bogart is a woman you need in your life...even if it's virtually. (And if you are not a homeschooler she can still do your family a whole world of good!) True to what we all expected, this book is packed with so much wisdom that was earned through experience. It is deeply encouraging and thought-provoking. It is inspiring and motivating yet not just rainbows and idealistic pretty-talk. She gives you actual, practical ideas to put action behind that inspiration! There are personal examples as well as lists of how to implement and things to try. The Brave Learner will challenge you to do better yet Julie's voice is, as always, gentle and gracious - understanding and leaving room for our mistakes and imperfections. She's real. I have so much highlighted I thought, "How am I ever going to be able to reference all of this good stuff later?? There's so much here!" Alas, I happened to flip to the back page to find a comprehensive index of topics, words and page numbers...that is going to save my bacon later when I want to find particular parts! Buy this book. Read it immediately. I cannot imagine anyone regretting it!

This book offers so many ideas for how to make our life and the lives of our children into one filled with joy and learning where we work together and teach one another. Julie Bogart gives us skills to allow our children to learn rather than to push them to do so.

Whenever I worry or wonder whether we're doing enough in our homeschool, I turn to Julie Bogart for a reality check and pep talk. The Brave Learner provides both and much more! She not only addresses issues faced daily by home educators, but also family dynamics navigated every day by every parent. With wit and authenticity, Julie shows us how to see, value, and engage with our children and with learning in new ways. This book is filled with practical ideas that I'm excited to implement now, as well as big, juicy ideas that I will enjoy pondering for a long time to come. I love the visual elements included in the book, including lists, charts, and graphic organizers. Plus, she's included so many interesting and inspiring quotes at the beginning of each chapter. If you want to bring more joy and confidence to your homeschool or family relationships, this book will help you do it.

I bought this book as an undergrad thinking about grad school. I wanted to learn more about what career opportunities would come from a PhD in sciences and I wanted to know what I would be getting myself into if I chose that path. This book is packed with great advice for what happens after you're finished with the highest form of formal education there is. Feibelman explains from his own experience (as a physicist), and others' experiences, routes in academia, gov, and industry. He also explains skills that formal education wouldn't necessarily teach you: getting funded, interviews, giving talks, etc. This book showed me a side of academics and the scientific community I hadn't known. And let's just say I didn't know what a postdoc was before I read this. I think the information in this book is invaluable to anyone who has, plans to, or is even considering pursuing a PhD in a science.

I would recommend this book for any PhD student in the hard sciences: Physics, Engineering, Math, Chemistry, etc. It gave me some real insight into what the world of research (industrial or academic) will be like when I graduate with my PhD. If you're just beginning a PhD program, or are considering Masters vs. PhD, this should be must-read material. I'm surprised my universities have not offered a class that covers this type of material, it would be much more useful than the mandatory ethics classes they force you to take. This book seems written for people who have already finished their PhD or are about to graduate very soon. I wish it had more about getting THROUGH the PhD in the first place, but that's too much to ask. This book focuses more on what to expect AFTER your PhD program, although some of the advice on picking an advisor, mentor, and research topic are applicable to anybody. So is the chapter on writing and presentations.

I am currently a graduate student. In a couple years I will be applying to PhD programs. This book had some great suggestions. I definitely feel slightly more confident pursuing a career in research. The book specifically addressed some things that I had some concerns about, specifically establishing yourself as a researcher in a competitive market. The job market will not be very competitive in my area of research, but funding is extremely competitive and big NIH research grants are extremely rare. I now have a better sense of direction.

I am currently pursuing my PhD and devoured this book. A PhD Is Not Enough is full of practical, useable advice and information. This book takes the reader through finding an advisor, giving presentations and seminars, teaching loads, postdoc job considerations, publishing papers, everything. The author's background in physics is close enough to my own field that every insight into graduate school and the subsequent career path translates into my own experience nicely. Dr. Feibelman gives a great rundown of the motivations of professors you may choose to work with during the various stages of their own careers and how that will affect their students for better or worse. Topics such as what sorts of projects to take on during your postdoc position, pros and cons of university labs verses government labs, obtaining funding, setting up your own lab or research area, and what interviewers are looking for prove very helpful insights into academia and will allow the student better preparation for each stage. It's a quick read, insightful, with an honest look at the sometimes contradictory forces of the academic environment. I highly recommend this book for anyone pursuing PhD and pursuing a scientific career.

This book is extraordinarily valuable for anyone with a doctoral degree in the natural or social sciences (Although the author is a physicist, I found his advice transferred very easily to my experiences in the social sciences, and is far better than similar books by social scientists. I only wish this book had been available when I was a grad student). The author is concise; he says what needs to be said and leaves out the fluff. I strongly disagree with those reviewers who said his advice was common sense. If that were true, then why do so many intelligent students fail to follow these guidelines and end up dropping out, struggle in dysfunctional environments, or in some way fail to reach their potential? I found his advice to be rich and rewarding, and what he said frequently described the people I saw every day when I was a grad student. The fact that he refers to "overhead foils" is trivial and does not mean the book is outdated; the advice is not outdated by any means. Not everyone sees things the same way or has the same experiences, and I am sure there are other viewpoints, and one should always seek out a variety of opinions, but the author has a viewpoint that one should not miss. A short book, but one that is worth its weight in gold.

I read this to see whether to recommend it to graduate and undergraduate students in the sciences that attend my university. The author is a well-credentialed scientist at Sandia National Laboratory. There are many opinions presented that people considering or attempting a career in scientific research should know. Interviews, preparing talks, choosing what to publish and how, research plans, weighing various career options - all these topics are addressed. Some opinions differ from mine, most notably his preference for government labs like his over universities, but common sense generally prevails. The prose was vaguer than I prefer, much of it seemed obvious, perhaps because I've already been there. A few times it was obvious this dates to 1993.Overall, I prefer the book Academeology (google it) by "Female Science Professor", which nails the university life with much greater accuracy and precision. Aspiring scientists should really read both, and go into their careers with their eyes open.
